Description
Jun 27, 1939.
O. IVAN EK INTERCHANGEABLE LINE-UP Filed April 5, 1937 Fig.1.
lvamek w W QHOWWS l lllllllll Patented June 27, 1939 I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
My invention relates to novelties and it particularly has for its object to provide a novelty for use by those watching a football game, or listening to the game broadcast over the radio so that the spectator or listener on the radio can have the proper lineup before him no matter how fast the substitutions of players are made during the game.
Further it is an object to provide a novelty of the character stated which may be used for advertising purposes by providing advertisements on the back or even on the front of the article if desired.
In the drawing in which like numerals and letters of references designate like parts in all the figures,
Fig. 1 is a face view of an interchangeable lineup card embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a detail section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a detail section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a face view of .a player slide member.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part generally pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends the invention still further resides in those novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described in the following detailed description, then be pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which the card is shown made up of two thicknesses of material, I and 2, the material used being cardboard, stiff paper, Celluloid, or metal as may be found most desirable. The card is preferably made up somewhat in the form simulating a football with lines 33 indicating the usual stitching and 4 the usual lacing of a football.
On one face, preferably that of the member I, is printed or otherwise indicated a lineup of players, the players being indicated preferably in the attitude of being ready to begin the play and they are indicated by the letters C for center, R. G. and L. G. for right and left guards respectively, R. T. and L. T. for right and left tackles, R. E. and L. E. for right and left ends, Q. B. for quarter-back, R. H. and L. H. for right and left half-backs, and F. B. for full-back.
Adjacent each player designation the member I has two parallel slots 5-5 and two parallel slots 6-6 at right angles to the first pair, the slots 6-45 defining, when the panel I is in place, a Window through which the number and name of the player is exhibited.
The panel 1 comprises an elongated strip having the numbers and names of the players listed thereon in vertical columns. At the one end the panel I is transversely slotted or slit as at 8 to provide a pair of ears 9 connected by a brace por tion Hi, the ears 9 passing through the slots 55 while the strip 1 is passed through the slots 66 as shown. The ears 9 thus serve as guides by means of which the panel I may be slid in a direction parallel to the slots 5-5 to expose the name and number of any player desired.
While I have shown the card as made up of a front section I and a back section 2, the back section may be omitted if desired.
The panels I are made up to contain the numbers and names of the players of a particular team, via, all Princeton, or all Yale, etc., and will of course be different for each team. The panels of any given card will of course contain the numbers and names of the different players who may be called to fill the particular position with which the particular panels are associated.
From the foregoing it will be seen that if a player, say for example, the quarter-back Kelly (player #18), is taken out of the game and another player is announced by number as a substitute, it is only necessary to slide the Q. B. panel back or forth until the announced number appears in the adjacent window. Substitutions may be made in this way throughout the game and the spectator or listener on the radio can have the proper lineup before him no matter how fast the substitutions are made during the game.
The spaces between the lines 3-3 on the back 2 and between those lines and the margins can be used as spaces for advertisements if desired. So also may the blank spaces on the front I be used if desired, so long as the advertising matter does not seriously affect the ready reading of the numbers and names of the players in the windows adjacent to the pictures of the players.
The cars or guides 9 may be left fiat or they may be bent up at an angle to the plane of the face of the card, as may be found most convenient for the purpose of manipulating the panel.
The front and back sheets I and 2 may be secured together in any desired way, e. g., as by means of paste along their margins.
Slits ll may be provided near the lower ends of the slots 5, 5 to facilitate passage of the guides 9. This feature simplifies the insertion of the panels into the card in this manner: the panel is first inserted through the window and moved upward until the end of the panel reaches slits H, and then moved downward, after the guides 9 are passed through the slits H in their fiattened condition shown in Figure 5, as far as they will go; the guides 9 will now have passed from the back of the card, where they were inserted, to the front of the card to their operating position.
From the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought the construction, utility and advantages of the invention as well as its mode of operation will be clear to those skilled in the art.
What I claim is:
1. A novelty comprising a card sheet with representations of a football lineup of player positions, said card having a pair of parallel slots adjacent each player position and having a second pair of parallel slots adjacent the first pair but at right angles to the same, a panel for each player position comprising a strip on one face of which is contained, in columnar arrangement, the number and name of each player of the team for the particular position, said panel strip extending through the second of said pairs of slots to exhibit a single players number and name at a time, said panel strip having guideears extending through the first of said pairs of slots for purposes described.
2. A novelty comprising a card sheet with representations of a football lineup of player positions, said card having a pair of parallel slots adjacent each player position and having a second pair of parallel slots adjacent the first pair but at right angles to the same, a panel for each player position comprising a strip on one face of which is contained, in columnar arrangement, the number and name of each player of the team for the particular position, said panel strip extending through the second of said pairs of slots to exhibit a single players number and name at a time, said panel strip having guide-ears extending through the first of said pairs of slots, said panel strip being located on the rear face of said card sheet and a second card sheet as a backing for said panels and said first card sheet, said card sheets being secured together.
3. A novelty comprising a card sheet with representations of a football lineup of player positions, said card having a pair of parallel slots adjacent each player position and having a second pair of parallel slots adjacent the first pair but at right angles to and spaced from the same, a panel for each player position comprising a strip on one face of which is contained, in columnar arrangement, the number and name of each player of the team for the particular position, said panel strip extending through the second of said pairs of slots to exhibit a single players number and name at a time, said panel strip having guide-ears, said card having a third pair of slots communicating with the first pair of slots adjacent each player and extending laterally therefrom for the passage of said guide ears while they lie fiat during assembly of the panel strips and card.
