Description
June 20, 1939. v R. MERRILL 2,163,049.
TABLE OR THE LIKE Filed April 5, 1957 A TTORNEYS.
Patented June 20, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT orrics to American Seating Company, Grand Rapids,
Mich, a corporation of New Jersey Application April 5, 1937, Serial No. 134,955
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to tables or the like and more particularly to a table top and its supporting structure.
The primary objects of the instant inventio are to provide a table or the like having a top formed by the assembly of pre-fabricated sheet metal parts; to provide such a table whose top is supported by pre-fabricated sheet metal legs assembled therewith in a novel manner; and, to provide such a table which is attractive in appearance, utilitarian in use, rugged and sturdy in construction and economical in manufacture.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a side elevational View of the table or desk;
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view thereof on line 2-2 of Figure 3;
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the table top, partly broken away to better show one of its supporting legs in its assembled relation with the table top;
Figure 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 of Figure 2, a portion of the table top being broken away to better show the tubular leg construction;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the prefabricated table top members prior to assembly; and
Figure 6 is a perspective View of the leg securing plate.
Referring then to the drawing wherein like parts of the structure shown are designated by the same numerals in the several views, a table, desk or the like comprises a pair of spaced vertically disposed pre-fabricated sheet metal tubular legs l0, here shown as elliptical in form in cross section and each supported by a pair of laterally disposed feet ll, preferably formed of tubular sheet metal stock and secured on opposite sides of each leg at the lower end thereof as by spot welding and as shown in Figure 1.
Each leg ill is here shown as provided with a bracket l2 secured thereto on its inner length near its upper end and a horizontally disposed sub-top member I3 is supported upon and secured to these brackets interjacent the pair of spaced legs in any suitable manner as by screws M.
A horizontally disposed top member l5 has a pair of spaced plates 16 secured to its under sur- 5o face as by screws I! each of which plates is provided with a depending conical or inwardly tapered flange l8 set into the upper end of a tubular leg.
A pre-fabricated channel sheet metal band I9 55 for strengthening and for enhancing the ornamental appearance of the structure is provided, the upper flanged portion 20 being secured to the under surface of the top member [5 and the lower flanged portion 2| being secured to the under surface of the sub-top member I 3, all as by screws 22. Thus the top l5, ornamental band l9 and sub-top iii are all rigidly secured together, and to the tubular legs ID at two points by means of the flanged plates l6 and brackets l2. The brackets [2 are secured to the tubular legs H1 at a point appreciably below the plates l6 and thus the top and sub-top are firmly secured in their horizontal positions. an embossed ornamental portion and as here shown a longitudinal bead 23 is provided intermediate its width.
It will thus be seen that the structure herein shown and described is attractive in appearance, rugged and sturdy in construction, utilitarian in use and economical in manufacture.
While but one specific embodiment of the invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that certain details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of the invention as the same is defined by the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a structure of the class described, a pair of spaced vertically disposed tubular legs, a horizontally disposed top member having a pair of spaced plates secured to its under surface, each plate being provided with a depending annular flange set into the upper end of a tubular leg, 2. horizontally disposed sub-top member disposed below the top member in spaced relation thereto and between the pair of tubular legs and having a pair of spaced brackets secured to its under surface, each bracket being provided with a depending flange secured to a tubular leg below the upper end thereof, and a pre-fabricated channel sheet metal ornamental band rigidly connecting the top and sub-top, the upper flanged portion of said This band is preferably provided with band being secured to the under surface of the top member and the lower flanged portion of said band being in engagement with the under surface of the sub-top.
2. In a structure of the class described, a pair of spaced vertically disposed tubular legs, a horizontally disposed top member having a pair of spaced plates secured to its under surface, each plate being provided with a depending annular flange set into the upper end of a tubular leg, a horizontally disposed sub-top member disposed below the top member in spaced relation thereto and between the pair of tubular legs and having a pair offlanged portion of said band being secured to the under surface of the top member and the lower flanged portion of said band being secured to the under surface of the sub-top.
RALPH K. MERRILL.
