This invention relates to improvements in railway car body bolsters and it consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a bolster for a railway car body, wherein the parts are so formed and coordinated as to have a mutual bracing relation whereby a minimum amount of material is employed and the weight is greatly reduced without sacrificing strength.
Another object of the invention is to provide a bolster of this kind which-may be made at a low material and labor cost.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bolster of this kind especially adapted for use in connection with the well known Duryea cushioned type of underframe, wherein the center sill thereof passes through and has a limited longitudinal cushioned movement with respect to the bolster.
Again, it is an object of the invention to provide a railway car body bolster of a composite type to include preformed metal sheets and a casting so relatively formed as to make it practical to secure the parts together by welding, thus avoiding the cost and other objectionable features in the use of rivets.
The above mentioned objects of the invention, as well as others, together with the several advantages thereof, will more fully appear as I proceed with my specification.

The improved bolster is of a built up composite type in that the top or cover plate, the bottom or tie plate thereof and certain other associated parts are made of preformed metallic plates welded together and to a center brace structure preferably made as a one-piece casting. In this manner, the metal forming the bolster may. be arranged for the best distribution so that the greatest strength may be obtained with the least Weight, and the material and labor cost reduced.
Referring now in detail to that embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates as a whole the top or cover plate of the bolster and II indicates as a whole the bottom or tie plate thereof. The top or cover plate constitutes the tension member of the bolster and the bottom or tie plate constitutes the compression member thereof. Both of these plates are made of suitable gaugesheet metal cut to substantially the same pattern form.
As shown herein, the cover plate 10 is substantially flat throughout its length and has a relatively Wide mid portion l2 with parallel side edges, and end portions l3-|3 which taper in width toward their extremities. The tie plate II is of substantially the same shape as the cover plate. It includes a relatively wide mid portion I4 with parallel side edges, upwardly and outwardly inclined intermediate portions [5 and end portions I 6. These end portions are substantially parallel with the end portions of the cover plate and are spaced closer thereto than the spacing between the mid portions of the cover and tie plates. In the mid portion of the tie plate is a center opening H, the purpose of which will soon appear.

These passageways accomof certain channels I. through the bolster (see Fig. 3) and which channels constitute the center sill of the associate underframe of the Duryea type. The walls 30-" of the casting 23 are formed with top and bottom guide lugs 30 and Ill respectively for engagement by the said center sill channels. Those portions of the partition wall 25, forming the tops of the said passageways, are further provided with bosses ll which form limiting abutments or stops for engagement by parts of the center sill (not shown).
Arranged between the end portions of the cover and tie plates outwardly from the walls '28, before mentioned, are pairs of laterally spaced upright, shear resisting diaphragms 42-42 which terminate at their outer ends at the sill reinforcement l8. These diaphragms are spaced apart a distance approximating the spacing between the flanges 29 of the wall and with which flanges the inner ends of the diaphragms engage.
On the bottom surface of each intermediate portion of the tie plate, a transverse plate 43 is secured for operative engagement by a side hearing, not shown. Each plate is preferably secured to the tie plate by the rivets 44. To stiffen the bolster at these points to resist side bearing loads, I provide upright transverse stifiener plates 45 which are welded to the tie plate adjacent the longitudinal planes of the longer edges of each open atthe plate 43. Each stiflener plate 45 terminates at its top edge at a point below the cover plate and extends through parts of the diaphragms 42-42 intermediate Wilt stiflening whicharecutoutasatllforthepasageofthe stidenerplatestherethrough. Each arm constitutes. a straight top arm member II and a suitably shaped bottom arm member ll. Both arm members are preferably made ofanglebars. Inthecaseofeachtoparmmemher, the horizontal flange thereof faces outwardly and the vertical flange faces downwardly. In the case of'each bottom arm member, the horizontal flange races outwardly and the vertical flange faces upwardly.
The inner end of the horizontal flange of each top arm member engages the underside of the top or cover plate II and is welded thereto, the vertical flange of the top arm being spaced outwardly from the plane of the wall 28. The inner end of the horizontal flange of each bottom arm engages the top side of the tie plate and is welded thereto and the inner end of the vertical fiange of said bottom arm member is spaced outwardly from the plane of the wall 28. The outer end of the vertical flange of each bottom arm abuts and is welded to the outer end of the vertical flange of the associated top arm and a stiilener plate Ii is welded to said flanges midway between the ends of the arm members.
On the bottom surface of the tie plate, in the plane of the sill passageways 31, are provided stiflener ribs 52 which extend longitudinally of the tie plate. Said stiflener ribs are herein shown as plates. welded to the tie plate so as to terminate at their inner ends at the opening i1 and terminate at their outer ends at the ends of the mid portion of the tie plate. Instead of making said ribs as separate plates and welding them to the tie plate. they may be formed by pressing portions of the tie plate downwardly by means of suitable coacting dies.
It is apparent that with the various parts termed as described. they may be assembled in several different ways. One practical way to assemble the parts is-to turn the top or cover plate upside down and then invert a center brace casting 23 and arrange its top wall 24 in proper relation upon the mid portion of the cover plate. When this casting is'properly positioned, lines of welding I! are run along the corner formed by the junction of the casting wall 26 with the cover plate. Also lines of welding II are run along the corner defined by the ends of the walls of the casting with the cover plate.
One diaphragm I of each pair thereof is then positioned on the associated cover plate with, its inner'end engaged against the outer face of the associated flange 20 of a wall 28 and thereafter secured thereto by a line oi welding 51. The edge of each of these diaphragm is welded to the cover plate as at 51:: in Fig. 7.
1A tie plate ii, with the side bearing engagement plate 43, the stiffening plates 45, the torque arm members 50 and with the other stiflener ribs 52 welded thereto, is then applied to the cover plate and casting, with the center plate extension 32 of the'casting extending up through the opening I! in the tie plate. In positioning the tie plate as described,- the stiilener plates ll thereof enter the notches or openings ll "provided therefor in the two shear resisting diaphragms previously welded to the ccver'plate. This assists in accurately positioning the tie and cover plates, after which a line of welding 58 is run about the corner formed by the base of the extension 32 and. that part of the tie plate defin- -ing the opening. I] to secure the parts together 'at this place. When the tie plate has thus been applied, the inner ends of the stiffener plates 52 which abut the center plate extension 32 are welded thereto as at 59.
The side sill reinforcement members l8 are then applied and riveted to the ends of the cover and tie plates. While the thus far completed bolster is in this position, the top arm members 49 of the torque arms 48 may be welded in place and at this time the welding operations may be carried on ina downwardly direction. When said arms are in this position, their outer ends are welded together and a stiffener. plate is applied between the two members of each arm. Thereafter the thus far completed bolster is turned over, right side up and the bottom edges of the two diaphragms now in place may be welded to the tie plate. With only one diaphragm arranged on each side of casting 23, this gives access into the thus far finished bolster to run in a line of welding 51a to connect the bottom edge of the wall 28 to the tie plate. Thereafter the other diaphragms 42-42 may be applied in place and a line of welding '63 applied to those corners defined bythe engagement of the now bottom. edges of said other diaphragms 42 with the now top surface 'of the tie plate.
these ribs 52 on the tie plate H extend across that area thereof defined by the open bottom ends of the sill passageways 31 in the center brace casting so that the tie plate is indeed stiff and rigid at these points. By making the center plate extension 32 as an integral part of the center brace casting and welding the same to the tie plate as before mentioned, certain advantages are inherent. For instance, a better bond is provided between the center plate casting and tie plate, without the necessity of providing registering rivet holes in these parts and without the necessity of difficult rivet work. Also, greater strength is afiorded with fewer parts and assembling operations. It is also pointed out that no rivet heads are present on the top surface of the cover plate and therefore, routing out of the flooring of the associated car to accommodate such heads is unnecessary.
It is further to be noted that the greater strength is present in the bolster where it bears the greatest load, viz: at the center thereof and that the ends of the bolster may be made of much lighter weight where the lesser loads are present.
While in describing the invention, I have referred in detailto the form, arrangement and construction of the various parts thereof, as well as to the steps and sequences thereof in assembly, the same is to be considered only in the illustrative sense so that I do not wish to be limited thereto except as may be specifically set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a car body bolster, the combination of a cover plate, a tie plate having a substantially central opening therein within its edges, a center brace structuredisposed between said plates and including a center plate portion extending through said opening so that said center plate portion isentirely surrounded by a portion of the tie plate, and means for securing said cover plate and said tie plate to said center brace structure.
2. In a car body bolster, the combination of a cover plate, a tie plate having a substantially central opening therein within its edges, a center brace structure disposed between said plates and including a center plate portion extending through said opening so that said center plate portion is entirely surrounded by a portion of the tie plate, means for securing said cover plate and said tie plate to the-center brace structure, and a weld for securing a part of the center plate portion to that part of the tie plate defining said opening.
3. In a car body bolster, the combination of a cover plate, a tie plate having a substantially central opening therein Within its edges, a center brace casting disposed between said plates and including a center plate portion extending through said opening so that said center plate portion is entirely surrounded by a portion of the tie plate, and means for securing said casting to said cover plate and tie plate respectively.
4. In a car body-bolster, the combination of a cover plate, a tie plate having a substantially central opening therein within its edges, a center brace casting disposed between said plates and including a center plate portion extending through said opening so that said center plate portion is entirely surrounded by a portion of the tie plate, means for securing the top portion of the casting to the cover plate, and a weld for securing a part of the center plate portion to that part of the tie plate defining said opening.
5. In a car body bolster the combination of a cover plate, a tie plate having a substantially central opening therein within its edges, a center brace structure disposed between said plates and including a center plate portion extending through saidopening so that said center plate portion is entirely surrounded by a portion of the tie plate, means for securing said cover plate and the tie plate to said center brace structure, and means on the underside of said tie plate for stiffening the latter adjacent said opening.
6. In a car body bolster, the combination of 'a cover plate, a tie plate having a substantially central opening therein within its edges, a center brace structure disposed between said plates and including a center plate portion extending through said opening so that said center plate portion is entirely surrounded by a portion of the tie plate, means for securing said cover plate and the tie plate to said center brace structure,
and stiffening ribs secured to the underside of the tie plate adjacent said opening.
7. In a car body bolster, the combination of a cover plate, a tie plate having a substantially central opening therein within its edges, a center brace structure disposed between said plates and having at least one center sill opening extending transversely of said plates and including a center plate portion extending through the opening in the tie plate so as to be entirely surrounded by a portion of the tie plate, and means for securing said cover plate and tie plate to the center brace structure.
8. In a car body bolster, the combination of a cover plate, a. tie plate having a substantially central opening therein within its edges, a center brace structure disposed between said plates and 'having at least one center sill opening extending transversely 01' said plates and including a center plate portion extending through the opening in the tie plate so as to be entirely surrounded by a 5 portion of the tie plate, means for securing said cover plate and tie plate to the center brace structure, and means for stiiiening the. tie plate in the plane oi the center sill opening in the center brace structure.
-9 In a car body bolster, the combination of a cover plate, a tie plate having a substantially central opening therein within its edges, a center brace structure disposed betweensaid plates and having laterally spaced, center sill openings each u bottomed by a part of the. tie plate, said center brace structure including a center plate portion arranged between said center sill openings and extending through the opening in the tie plate so as to be entirely surrounded by a portion of the tie plate, means for securing said cover plate and the tie plate to the center brace structure, and means for stiffening those parts of the tie plate that bottom said center sill openings. 1
10. In a car body bolster, the combination of a cover plate, a tie plate having a substantially central opening therein, a center brace structure disposed between said plates and having laterally spaced, center sill openings each bottomed by a part of the tie plate, said center brace structure including a center plate portion arranged between said center sill openings and extending through the opening in the tie plate, means for securing said cover plate and tie plate to the center brace structure, and stiiiening ribs extending outwardly from the center plate and secured to those parts of the tie plate that bottom said center sill openings.
11. A car body bolster comprising a cover plate, a tie plate having a substantially central opening therein within its edges, a center brace structure disposed between said plates and including a center plate portion extending through said opening so that said center plate portion is entirely surrounded by a portion of the tile plate, means for securing the cover plate and the tie plate to the center plate structure, and means providing shear resisting diaphragms between those parts of the cover plate and the tie plate outwardly from each side of the center brace structure.
12. A car body bolster comprising a cover plate, a tie plate having a substantially central opening therein within its edges, a center brace structure disposed between said plates and in- Blicludlng a center plate portionextending through said opening so that said center plate portion is entirely surrounded by a portion of the tie plate, means for securing the cover plate and the tie plate to the center plate structure, and means providing shear resisting diaphragms between those parts of the cover plate and the tie plate outwardlytrom each side of the center brace structure, the inner ends or the shear resisting means being engaged withparts at said center brace structure. i
13. A car-body bolster, the combination a cover plate, a tie plate-having a substantially central opening therein, a center brace structure having laterally spaced center sill openin each defined on the outside by a vertical wall tormingapartoisaidstruct ,said center-brace structure including a center plate portion extending through the said opening on the. tie plate, means for securing said cover plate and the tie plate to the center structure, means providing vertical diaphragms between the cover plate and tie plate, outwardly beyond each o! said vertical walls, and means providing torque inparttosaidcoverplatesndtie plate respectively adjacent said walls.
14. In a car body bolster, the combination of a cover plate, a tie plate having a substantially central opening therein, a center brace casting disposed between said plates and including laterally spaced center sill openings each deiined by inner and outer walls and a top wall, the center sill openings being bottomed by parts of the tie plate, means in said casting providing a hollow box-like bracing structure above said center sill openings, said casting including a center plate portion at the bottomwhich extends down through the opening in the tie plate, and
means for securing the'cover plate and the tie plate to the center brace casting.
15. In a car body bolster, the combination of a cover plate, a tie plate having a substantially central opening therein, a center brace casting disposed between said plates and including laterally spaced center sill openings each defined by inner and outer walls and'a top wall, the center sill openings being bottomed by parts of the tie plate, means in said casting providing a hollow box-like bracing structure above said center sill openings, said casting including a water plate p rtion at the bottom which extends down through the opening in the tie plate, means for securing the cover plate and the tie plate to the center brace casting, and means providing stiiI- ening ribs for these parts of the tie plate which bottom the center sill openings in said casting.
16. As an article or manufacture, a railway car underirame memberincluding a bottom tie member adapted for application to the body bolster of a car having a center plate, said member having an opening adapted to encircle the center plate and be welded thereto.
