Description

Galton, Canajoharie, N..Y., assignor to Beech-Nut Packing Company, Canajoharie, N. Y., a corporation of New York 7 g Application June so, 1937, Serial'No. 151,151
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to display stands, and has special reference to display stands for small packages, such as small packages of candy and chewing gum.
Display stands of this character are commonly provided with a bottom wall that is inclined downward-1y and forwardly, longitudinal side walls that have their upper edges inclined downwardly and forwardly and extending a distance above the bottom wall, and glass dividers or parti-tions extending between the side walls and dividing the stand into a plurality of transverse compartments. These' glass partitions are removably supported in upright position on the bottom wall by channel members or clips arranged adjacent the inner sides of the side walls. Such display stands are made of various widths and are commonly supplied to retail stores by the candy or chewing gum manufacturer. The salesman for the manufacturer usually attends to the arranging of the articles and maintaining the stands in a clean and sanitary condition. In order for the salesman to attend to this properly, it is necessary for him to frequently remove the glass partitions and separately clean and polish them. In removing a glass partition, however, the merchandise displayed would naturally drop down into the compartment below which made it necessary for the salesman to remove all the merchandise from the stand and again rearrange it after the partitions are replaced, which of course is a troublesome and time consuming operation.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a device which is simple in construction and convenient in use, and which may be easily slipped into place in the display stand so as to hold the merchandise in place while each glass partition is being removed for cleaning, after which the glass partition may be replaced and the device removed from the stand.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of the character indicated.
The preferred form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a display stand with my improved device applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view, with parts broken away to save space, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2, illustrating especially one of the compartments of the stand with the device applied to the stand and supporting packages of fruit drops or other small packages; and
Fig. 4 is a front View of a display stand of narrower width than that illustrated in Fig. 1 with the improved device applied thereto.
The display stand illustrated in the drawing is provided with a floor or bottom Wall 2 which is inclined downwardly and forwardly, longitudinal side walls 4 which have their upper edges inclined downwardly and forwardly and spaced a distance above the bottom wall, a front wall 6 and glass dividers or partitions 8. Each of the partitions 8 rests upon the bottom wall and is held in upright position by clips or channel members l0 which are arranged adjacent the inner sides of the side walls and which receive the lower outer corners of the glass partitions. The packages, such as cylindrical packages of fruit drops II, and packages of chewing gum, are arranged in stacks in each compartment formed between the glass partitions with the several stacks in each compartment arranged in end to end relation. The stands are made of various widths. The stand illustrated in Fig. 1 is of a width to receive eight stacks of fruit drops or chewing gum packages therein, while the stand illustrated in Fig. 4 is adapted to receive only two such stacks in each compartment.
My improved device as illustrated in the drawing is adapted to be used in connection with display stands of the type illustrated and described and is adjustable for difierent width stands. This device consists of a temporary divider or partition which is made up of two strips of thin sheet metal l2and I4 which are ar- 35 ranged in sliding engagement in side by side relation. The member I4 is provided with a rearwardly directed flange H5 at its upper edge, and the upper edge of the member I2 is bent to form a guideway l8 to receive the flange is so as to hold the two members l2 and I4 together but permitting them to be relatively moved longitudinally. The member I2 is provided at one end with a semi-circular notch 20 which provides a clearance space for the thumb of the user to engage the member M to adjust the two members from their contracted position.
The left-hand portion of each of the members l2 and I4 is provided with a plurality of transverse slots 22 which open out through the lower edge of the member. The slots are equally spaced apart and are adapted to register when the two members are brought into their con tracted position as shown in Fig. 4. The end slot of each member is spaced a distance from the left-hand end of the member.
When it is desired to remove one of the glass partitions 8 of the stand illustrated in Fig. 1, my improved device may be adjusted to the proper length and slipped down between the rear side of the glass partition and the articles at the rear of the partition. The right-hand end of the device is positioned against the rear side of the right-hand channel member ID associated with the partition, and the outermost slot 22 positioned over the left-hand side Wall of the stand (Figs. 1, 2 and 3). The glass partition may then be removed whereupon the articles in the compartment are held by the device. After the salesman has cleaned and polished the glass partition, he replaces it in the holding members I adjacent the rear side of said device. The device may then be removed and similarly used when it is desired to remove and replace the other glass partitions. i
With the use of the device in a narrower stand, illustrated in Fig. 4, it may be contracted to its shortest length, which positions the slots 22 of the two members in registry so that they may be placed over the upper edges of the side walls of the stand and against the rear sides of a partition and the holding members I 0 therefor. The glass partition may then be removed and replaced as above described in connection with the stand illustrated in Fig. 1.
It will be apparent that my improved device is simple in construction and convenient in use,
and that it is adapted to be used with the various width standard stands so that it is necessary for the salesman to carry with him only one such device.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the class described for use on a display stand having a bottom wall, longitudinal side walls having their upper edges extending above the bottom wall, partitions extending between the side walls, and members arranged adjacent the side walls for receiving the ends of the partitions to removably hold the partitions in place, said device comprising two members of sheet material arranged in side by side relation in sliding engagement so as to permit the members to be relatively moved to vary the length of said device to accommodate it to display stands of various widths, said device being adapted to be inserted between a side of one of the partitions and the articles adjacent said side to hold the articles in place while the partition is being removed. and replaced.
2. A device according to claim 1 in which each of said members is provided with a series of downwardly opening transverse slots, each of which is adapted to receive the upper portion of a side wall when the device is in position on the display stand.
