BED COVERING SUPPORT Filed April 18, 1938 0 o o o o o 6 o 0 INVENTOR ATTO RN EYS Patented May 30, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BED COVERING SUPPORT Clemence M. Schadell, Ridgewood, N. J.
Application April 18, 1938, Serial No. 202,795
2 Claims.
My invention relates to supports and more particularly to bed covering supports.
One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide a bed covering support so constructed 5 and arranged as to maintain bed coverings in spaced relation from the feet of an occupant of a bed.
Another object of my invention is to provide a support of the above described character equipped 10 with means for reenforcing the support shell and serving as a heat absorbing and radiating medium.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the above described character which 15 is simple in construction, durable in use, efficient in operation and economical in manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawing.
20 Referring to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention illustrating the same arranged in operating po- 25 sition within a bed whereby to support the bed clothing away from the feet of the occupant of the bed.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of my invention on an enlarged scale.
30 Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective View of 35 the upper section of the bed covering support shell.
In practicing my invention I utilize an elongated bed covering support shell 5 iormed with open ends 6 and which is adapted to rest at the 40 foot of a bed 1 between the mattress 8 and bed covering 9 as illustrated in Figure 1 of the draw- 1ng.
Positioned within the shell 5 is a container l fashioned with open ends ll closed by means of 45 doors I2 hinged to the ends as at l3. The doors l2 are formed with perforations l4 and have secured thereto handles 15 for operating the doors.
The shell is provided with a top wall I6 formed with slots I! through which pass ears l8 fashioned from the top IQ of the container I0. Pivoted to the ears I8 exteriorly of the shell 5 is a handle 20 which serves to secure the container in adjusted position within the shell and also acts as a medium whereby the device may be readily carried.
The shell 5 is constructed of cardboard having rounded corners and edges whereby to protect 5 the feet and bed coverings from injury. The container I 0 is constructed of heat absorbing and radiating material, for instance metal, and serves to reenforce the shell 5 and maintain the same in shape while in use. If desired the container may 10 be heated and secured within the shell for insertion under the bed covering whereby the same serves to heat the feet of the occupant. However, a hot water bottle or electric lamp, as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 3, may be secured within the shell to serve as a heating medium. The apertures I4 in the doors serve to permit the heated air to circulate through the container.
When the shell 5 becomes soiled the same may be readily removed from about the container by detaching the handle 20, the shell having sufiicient pliability to permit the ears l8 being withdrawn through the slots ll.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that my device provides a simple and eflicient means whereby bed covering is supported above the feet ofan occupant of a bed and at the same time serves as a means for heating the feet.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising, a bed covering support shell having open ends, a container secured within said shell and provided with apertured doors in the ends thereof and adapted to reenforce said support shell and to house a heating medium for heating the feet of the occupant of a bed, ears formed on said container and extending through said support shell, and a handle connected to said ears for maintaining said container in adjusted position within said shell.
2. A device of the character described, comprising, an elongated bed covering support shell having open ends, a container within said shell fashioned with open ends, doors hinged to said shell for closing the open ends thereof, said doors formed with perforations for effecting a circulation of air through said container, ears formed on said container and extending through said shell,
a handle pivoted to said ears for securing said container in adjusted position within said shell.
