Description
Patented May 23, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SCISSOR TOY William R. Tuttle and Charles W. Stickel,
of New York Application September 16, 1937, Serial No. 164,203
3 Claims.
This invention relates to toys and has special reference to toy figures.
More particularly the invention relates to a combination of scissors and a toy figure provided withmeans forlsupporting the iigurefon a pair of scissors so that operation of the scissors in the usual manner causes the figure to appear to move up and down.
One important object of the invention is to provide a toy gure having novel means whereby it may be readily attached to a pair of scissors with or without the use of bolts, screws, rivets or any other like fastenings and often without making necessary any drilling or other machining or changing of the construction of the scissors.
A second important object of the invention is' to provide a novel combination of childrens scissors and a toy figure so associated therewith that normal operation of the scissors causes the figure to move alternately up and down, producing animation pleasing to the user.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in thel accompanying drawing and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a side elevation to an enlarged scale showing a pair of scissors having a toy figure applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a greatly enlarged section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a similar section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In the device as disclosed in the accompanying drawing there is shown a pair of scissors having blades IIJ connected by the usual pivot I I. Shanks or handles I2 extend from the pivotally connected ends of the blades and these shanks are provided with the usual loops or bows I3.
The structure just described thus forms a pair of scissors of the simple type commonly known as childrens scissors.
A toy figure I4, cut from sheet metal or molded from suitable material is provided with a base portion I5 of suitable shape to iit on the outer side of the upper or thumb side shank I2. This base is provided with a downwardly extending strap I6 formed from bendable material and from the edge of the figure adjacent the thumb bow extends a lateral strap I'I also of bendable material. For instance the figure may be stamped from thin `metal suitably painted or stamped to represent a well known toy figure, that here shown being a representation of the well known Mickey Mouse. It is, however, to be understood that the invention is not confined to a representation of this particular gure.
In applying this iigure to the scissors the strap I 6 is wrapped around the shank I2 as at IB in Figure 2 and wrapping the strap I1 around the side of the bow I3 as at I9 in Figure 3. When thus attached the toy gure appears to stand up on the scissors and, as the blades are alternately opened and closed, the figure appears to hop up and down, thus providing animation and a source of amusement.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention herein described shows the use of bendable straps for ailixing the figure I4 to the scissors, where considered desirable the figure I4 may be attached to the scissors by any other suitable means such as soldering, welding, brazing, riveting, nuts and bolts, or cement. The figure may also be made integral with one of the scissor halves where desired.
There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the kind and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the essential inventive features, and it is accordingly to be noted that the invention is not restricted to the specific form herein illustrated but includes all forms which come within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed as new, is:
1. A toy figure of thin material having a base portion, a bendable strap extending downwardly from the base portion for bended engagement with the upper shank of a pair of scissors, and a second bendable strap extending laterally from the figure for bending around a portion of the upper bow of said scissors.
2. The combination with a pair of scissors including a thumb receiving bow and a shank extending forwardly therefrom, a toy figure having a base resting on top of said shank, a bendable strap extending downwardly from said base portion and bent around said shank, and a second bendable strap extending laterally from said iigure and bent around the forward portion of said bow.
3. The combination with a pair oi scissors including a thumb receiving bow and a shank extending. forwardly therefrom, a toy figure having a base resting on top of said shank, means securing said base to said shank, and a second means rsecuring an upper part of said figure to the forward part of said bow.
WILLIAM R. TTTLE. CHARLES W. S'I'ICKEL.
