This invention relates to a polishing and abrading head designed primarily for making active a mass of polishing or abrading material by way of example, steel wool, but it is to be understood that a structure, in accordance with this invention is for use in any connection for which it may be found applicable.
The invention has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter referred to, a structure of the type referred to for receiving, confining, holding, rotating, adjusting and making active a mass of abrading or polishing material relative to a piece of work for obtaining a thoroughly satisfactory abrading or polishing action thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a structure of the type referred to whereby a convenient manual adjustment, may be had for the mass of abrading or a polishing material when required.
A further object of the invention is to provide. in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a structure for the purpose referred to including a rotating element for a confined mass of abrading or polishing material having means for conveniently coupling the mass to said element to be bodily carried by the latter.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a structure for the purpose referred to capable of being expeditiously arranged for receiving, confining therein and coupling thereto a mass of abrading or polishing material.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a structure for the purpose referred to which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, readily assembled, conveniently adjusted, thoroughly efficient in its use and co 1.- paratively inexpensive to manufacture.
Embodying the foregoing ends essentially and to others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically referred to, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

The abrading or polishing material operating and adjusting structure, generally indicated at it, includes a rotatable receiver l3 of cylindrical contour formed of an enlarged outer portion l4 and a reduced inner portion I5 of less length and of greater thickness than the portion M. The latter at its outer end is formed with an outwardly directed annular flange l6 which constitutes a combined support and bearing. The portion H5 at its inner end is formed with an inwardly directed annular flange I 1 of materially greater width than the flange It. The rear end of portion :5 of receiver I3 is integral with the outer face of flange H, as well as having its cross sectional length less than the cross sectional length of flange H. The inner edge of the flange ll is flush with the inner face of portion I5. The latter coacts with the flange H to form the rear portion E5 of the receiver with an axial opening 18. The outer end of the receiver I3 is open. The inner diameter of portion 14 is materially greater than the opening H8. The wall of the latter is threaded throughout. That part of the flange H which is free of the said portion hi extends outwardly from the latter, is indicated at E9 and forms a combined bearing and support.
The structure l2 includes a stationary holder for, and in which is rotatably mounted, the receiver it. The holder 20 is in the form of an annular shell 2| of uniform outer diameter and formed of outer, intermediate and inner parts 22, 23 and 25 respectively. The part 23 is of greater inner diameter than the inner diameters of the parts 22, 24. The part 26 is of smaller inner diameter than the part 22. The junction of the part 23 with the parts 22, 24 forms the shell 2! with internal spaced annular shoulders 25, 25 which coact with a part of the body of shell 2! and a part of the body of the receiver to form an annular lubricant receiving space 21. The part 22 forms a bearing. The shoulder 2%: forms a bearing for flange ll. The holder is supported by flange H. The flange It provides a support for the holder and bears against the bottom edge of the latter. A lubricant supply cup 28 opens into the space 21 and is attached to the part 23 of shell 2i. A handle 29 is fixed to the part 23 of shell 2|. The part 24 of shell 2| extends beyond and coacts with the portion I5 of the receiver I3 to provide a lubricant receiving recess 30 in which is arranged a packing 3|. The said part 24 is provided with a pair of diametricaly opposed openings 32 which at their inner ends permanently communicate with an annular peripheral groove 33 formed in the portion I5 of the receiver I3. The latter and the holder are detachably connected by a pair of oppositely disposed spring controlled combined bearing and coupling devices of like form and each of which consists of a removable pin 34 extended outwardly from part 24, slidably mounted in an opening 32 and extended into the groove 33 and a resilient strap-like member 35 having an offset part 36 bearing against the outer end of the pin. The members 35 are anchored by the holdfast means 31 to the outer face of the shell 2| at diametrically opposed points of the latter. The pins 34 not only provide couplers between the receiver and holder, but also bearings for the receiver on the rotation of the latter, as well as prevent relative axial movement of the holder and receiver. Attached to the part 24 of the shell 2| by the holdfast means 38 is an annulus 39 for not only retaining the packing 3| in the recess 30, but also constituting a closure for the latter and a lubricant retainer.
Threadedly engaging with the threads of the opening I8 and extending into the receiver I3 is an adjusting element 40 for a purpose to be referred to. The element 40 consists of a peripherally threaded rotatable adjustable tube 4| of the desired length having fixed to that end thereof within the receiver a pressure applying annulus 42 of a diameter to snugly engage the inner face of. the receiver. The tube 4| is of a length to permanently project from the inner end of the receiver and has formedintegral therewith, at its upper end an open top lubricant container 43 arranged exteriorly of the re-' ceiver and holder. The container 43 is closed by a flanged cap 44 having threaded engagement therewith. The bottom 45 of container 43 and the top 46 of cap 44 have aligned openings 47, 48 respectively. The opening 47 permanently communicates with the interior of the tube 4| for supplying lubricant thereto.
"The structure I2 includes an operating element 49 for rotating a mass 50 of an: abrading or polishing material. The mass 50 is shown in dotted lines and it is arranged within and extended from the outer end of the receiver. The said mass 513 is capable of being adjusted in an outward direction relative to the receiver by the element 43, on the adjusting of the latter when occasion requires. The operating element 49 consists of a slidable rotatable shaft 5! extending through the cap 44, bottom 45 of container 43 and tube 4|. The inner end of shaft 5| has fixed thereto a disc 52 having its outer face formed with spaced angle-shaped pointed protuberances 53 providing couplers for connecting the mass 50 of abrading or polishing material in abutting relation with respect to the disc 52. The mass 50 will be in the form of a cartridge and preferably will consist of a shell carrying a body of steel wool. The disc 52 permanently abuts the annulus 42. The protuberances 53 are to engage within the inner portion of the mass of wool. The disc 52 is of a diameter to frictionally engage with the inner face of the receiver to cause the latter to bodily rotate with the shaft 5|. The latter is driven by a flexible shafting 54 connected to shaft 5|, as at 55.
When shaft 5| is driven and the operator grasps the handle 29 and holds the shell 2| stationary, the receiver I3, element 4|) and mass 50 will then bodily rotate in unison with the shaft 5| relative to holder 20, as the latter will be held stationary. The frictional engagement of the disc 52 with the inner face of, the receiver I3 will provide for the latter bodily rotating with the element 43. The annulus 42 is arranged in frictional engagement with the disc 52, and as heretofore set forth, the annulus 42 is in frictional engagement with the receiver I3. The latter is in threaded engagement with the tube 4|. When shaft 5| is driven the frictional engagement between the annulus 42 and disc 52, the frictional engagement between the annulus 42 and the receiver I3, and the threaded engagement between tube 4| and receiver I3 will provide for the bodily rotating of the receiver I3 and element 40 in unison. Onv the bodily rota tion of the shaft 5|, receiver I3, element 43 and mass 50 in unison, the outer end of mass 50 will become active when applied to the work to be abraded or polished. If it is desired to adjust the mass 50 for feeding thereof to compensate for wear on its outer end, the receiver I3 is held stationary and the container 43 revolved, which in turn will revolve the tube 4| moving the latter inwardly carrying the annulus 42 therewith, and the latter will apply pressure to the disc 52 to cause it to shift the shaft 5| in a direction corresponding to that of the tube whereby a portion of the means 53 will be projected from the outer end of the receiver. Lubricant is supplied to between tube 4| and shaft 5| to prevent them sticking together and to facilitate the adjusting of element 40 when desired.
What I claim is:
1. An abrading and polishing mass operating and adjusting head comprising a rotatable cylindrical receiver for holding in extended relation with respect to its outer end the said mass and having an inner end terminal portion, a stationary holder encompassing the receiver and provided with normally active releasable devices for rotatably connecting said receiver thereto, providing bearings for the receiver at said inner end terminal portion and preventing relative axial. movement of the holder and receiver, a slidably rotatable element extended into the receiver and formed of a driven shaft having its forward end provided with means for frictionally connecting said receiver therewith and coupling said mass thereto whereby the latter and the receiver will bodily rotate in unison with said element, and a manually rotatable adjusting element for said mass including a forward part frictionally engaging with said means to bodily rotate in unison therewith, said adjusting element including a peripherally threaded tube leading rearwardly from said forward part, encompassing said shaft, disposed axially of and extended from the rear end of the receiver, said tube threadably engaging with the said rear end portion and being forwardly adjustable lengthwise of the receiver to shift said means in a like direction for adjusting said mass.
2. The invention as set forth by claim 1 having said receiver and holder formed with inherent coacting portions providing a support for the holder and a bearing for the receiver.
3. In a polishing and abrading mass operating and adjusting head, a rotatable receiver for slidably confining said mass therein in extended relation with respect to the outer end thereof, a stationary holder for said receiver, means for rotatably connecting the receiver to the holder and for preventing relative axial movement of the holder and receiver, rotatable means extended into and for bodily rotating the receiver therewith, said rotatable means being arranged rearwardly of said mass, couplers for connecting said mass to said rotatable means to cause said mass to bodily rotate, said rotatable means and receiver having adjustably interengaging portions for causing a part of said mass to be outwardly extended with respect to the said end of the receiver to compensate for wear on the outer end of the mass.
