1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in display devices of the type adapted for use as greeting cards or for display advertising purposes.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of the character described, made of a single sheet of paper or the like which may be folded in compact form for mailing or transporting, but when the device is unfolded it presents an especially attractive visual effect wherein the parts assume positions simulating a dioramic or perspective view including a foreground section, a background section and intermediate wing sections having figures which stand out in silhouette from the background.
The invention may best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of a fiat sheet of paper decorated and cut, but before folding, to form one embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device shown in Fig. 1, but in fully folded form, as for mailing or packing.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device shown in the preceding figures, but partly unfolded to afford the desired dioramic effect.
Referring to details of the embodimentof my invention illustrated in the drawing, it indicates a blank suitably decorated and cut to form the device by folding along the proper crease lines. Said blank comprises a substantially square sheet of paper or similar semi-stiff material provided with intersecting crease lines H-ll and I 2-l2 forming four sections adjoining each other at right angles. As will hereinafter be more fully described, these four sections are adapted to be interfolded and closed upon each other to form a compact, one-quarter size piece, as shown in Fig. 2, but when partially unfolded, said sections are arranged to assume a pictorial View of the dioramic type, as shown in Fig. 3.
Referring now more particularly to the arrangement of the several sections, it will be observed by comparison of Figs. 1 and 3 that one section I3 is designed for use as the base or foreground of the diorama, the opposite section l4 forms the background, and the two intermediate sections l5 and I6 are designed to provide side wing sections suitably decorated so as to include upright figures I1, I! and l8, l8 standing out in silhouette from the background section [4, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
Each of the intermediate or side sections l5 and. I6 has a bisecting crease line forming a front panel 2| and a rear panel 22. However, when the blank 10 is initially cut and preferably before the crease lines 20 are formed in side sections l5 and IS, a portion of each rear panel 22 is cut as along lines 2323 and 24-24, respec- 5 tively, to form the upper parts 25 and 26 that are to appear as continuations of the figures I1 and I8 on the adjacent front panels 2|. When the crease lines 29 are applied across sections l5 and I6, said crease lines extend only to the outer 10 ends of the cut-out lines 23 and 24, thus leaving parts 25 and 26 as integral, uncreased continuations of the front panels 2|. As a result, when the sheet is partially unfolded as in Fig. 3, the projecting portions 25 and 26 form upright con- 5 tinuous parts of the figures I1 and I8 of the side panels 22, extending above the upper crease lines 20, 20 so as to be silhouetted with respect to the background section I4. Said silhouetted portions 25 and 26 can, however, be readily inter- 20 folded or lapped inwardly with respect to each other so as to permit the device to be fully folded into compact form as shown in Fig. 2.
Although I have shown and described one particular embodiment of my invention, it will be 25 understood that I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction shown and described, but that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended 30 claim.
I claim as my invention:
A display device made of a continuous sheet creased along mutually meeting lines to form four sections, one of said sections forming a base, the opposite section having a pictorial representation thereon forming a background, and the two sections on opposite sides of said background section being creased along their respective bisecting lines so as to form two triangular subsections at each side of said background section, each of said sub-sections farthest removed from the background section having a pictorial representation thereon including one or more portions of figures extending beyond the respective bisecting crease line thereof, said extended portions of said figures being cut from their respective sub-sections so as to stand in silhouette above said bisecting crease lines and spaced forwardly of said background section when said sheet is in partially unfolded position and resting on said base section.
