Description

March 28, 1939. H, R PALMER 2,152,085 COIFFURE FOR PLASTIC FIGURES AND METHOD OF MAKING THE SAME Filed A ril 25, 1938 ML w w W. MR M a m m o E y CE FWMM Patented Mar. 28, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Hermione Ruth Palmer, Berkeley, Calif. Application April 25, 1938, Serial No. 204,059
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in ornamentation and has particular reference to a novel method of decorating or ornamenting the head of a plastic figure to realize an attractive coiffure that simulates the hair of the head of a human being.
The principal object of the invention is to produce, in addition to providing a novel article of manufacture, a unique method of inserting and securing within the head of the figure the ends of a plurality of curls so that the said curls may be retained in said head against accidental displacement, and to further form the curls so that a life-like representation of a coiifure will be realized.
. An additional object of the invention is to produce a method that is most economical and which will result in a highly ornamental and artistic reproduction of varied colored coiffures.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the article of manufacture constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the plastic head before the ornamental curls are applied thereto; and
Fig. 4 illustrates a plurality of strands of wire forming a curl set.
In the accompanying drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the base of a plastic figure 6, which in this instance is illustrated as the head of a girl wearing a cap I. It will be noted, as illustrated to advantage in Fig. 3, that a plurality of spaced radial openings 8 are provided in the head, the openings being formed adjacent the meeting line of the head with the cap.
The numeral 9 designates a plurality of sets of intertwining wires that are substantially straight at one end, thus facilitating the insertion of the same through the openings 8, and are curled adjacent their opposite ends to thus simulate curls. It will be noted, as disclosed to advantage in Fig. 3, that as the sets are introduced, the substantially straight ends of one set will be intertwined with adjacent ends of the other sets. 5 Thus, the ends of the wires will be sufiiciently intertwined one with the other to prevent accidental displacement of the formed curls. However, the inherent pliability of the wires will readily permit the removal of a single set of wires 10 that constitute an individual curl, should occasion require.
It might be herein mentioned that the curls can be formed either before or after the ends of the wires are inserted through the ends of the 15 openings -8.
In realizing the finished product of Fig. 1, a model, as disclosed in Fig. 3, is first made, and. the spaced holes are then formed in the head, after which the model is baked, thereafter the 20 ends of a set of intertwining wires are inserted through the openings, and thereafter the curlsare formed on the opposite ends of the intertwined wire.
It will be obvious from the foregoing descrip- 25 tion that I have produced a most attractive article of manufacture and have resorted to a most unique method in realizing the finished product.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described and the 30 method resorted to may be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the 35 scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A hollow molded head having a plurality of openings therein, a plurality of strands of wire forming an individual curl set, the strands being 40 substantially straight at one end and curled adjacent the opposite end, the straight ends of said strands being introduced through an opening of the head and having locking relation with another set of strands introduced through an ad- 45 jacent opening of the head.
I-IEFRMIONE RUTH PALMER.
