1 Claim. (01. 158-214) The present invention relates to an improvement in the construction of gas burning torches or blow pipes used especially in the welding and heating of metals. The general object and nature of the invention is to provide a novel form of construction for the head and burner tip of a single manifold type of torch whereby a central and an enveloping flame jet will be produced, together with means for controlling and regulating the extent and size of the enveloping flame.
My invention is particularly adaptable to gas torches utilizing a mixture of ordinary fuel gas and oxygen. By reason of the presence of the 25 outer enveloping flame, and the means for regulating such flame, it is possible to obtain temperature sufiiciently high to weld steel, which heretofore has not been obtainable by the use of ordinary fuel gas. The outer enveloping flame and the control thereof not only functions as a surrounding and de-oxidizing cloak for the central welding flame, but also operates to produce a pre-heating zone whereby it is possible to obtain a substantially higher temperature in the zone of the central flame. Another object of the invention is to provide a gas torch head construction for a single manifold or duct type of torch wherein the passages for distributing the combustible gas mixture to both the inner and outer 3o flame orifices are embodied entirely in the head, with the valve means for controlling the outer flame also assembled therein. In this manner, there results a substantial elimination of the number of parts and a simple form. of construc- 35 tion conveniently and practically adaptable to commercial shop practice and susceptible of being manufactured at a reasonable and low expense.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and 40 related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain structure em- 45 bodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various structural forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing:

55 Now referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a head I having a neck 2 adapted to receive the end of a single manifold or duct 3. A mixture of combustible gas and oxygen is conducted through the duct 3 to the torch head. A central tip member 4 has 5 a flange 5 bf hexagonal outer contour which threadably engages with the head as indicated at 6. A central passage I leads from the passage 8 in the head to the central orifice 9 in the tip.
An outer tip member I0 threadably engages 10 with the central tip member 4 as indicated at H. The central tip member has a plurality of semi-circular grooves l2 in its outer wall, the edges of which bear against the inner wall of the outer tip member ill. The torch tip thereby 16 presents a central orifice 9 surrounded concentrically by a plurality of outer orifices defined by the grooves l2.
A series of passages l3, which in the present instance are three in number, lead from the 20 chamber II in the tip head to the space between the central tip member 4 and the outer tip member III. As shown in Fig. 3, these passages l3 may simply be in the form of drilled bores.
The passages l5, l5 and I1 constitute a by- 25 pass leading from the upper passage 8 in the head I to the chamber M in the lower portion of the head. A threaded member l8 engages in the wall of the head I and presents a cylindrical portion I9 at the juncture of the passages l5 and I6. By means of the threaded member I 8, the rate of flow of gas through the by-pass formed by the passages l5, l6 and I1 and thence to the outer flame orifices formed by the grooves l2, can be regulated. The threaded member 18 thus constitutes a simple form of valve means, readily accessible to the operator and conveniently adjustable by means of a screw driver or the like for controlling the extent and size of the outer enveloping flame.
It will thus be seen that the above described construction possesses a number of parts, is exceedingly simple and easily capable of manufacture and assembly.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the structure herein disclosed, provided the means stated by the following claim or the equivalent of such stated means be employed. M
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
In a gas torch, the combination of a single gas supply duct, a head rigidly mounted on said duct,
a burner tip on said head having inner and outer u flame orifices, a central passage in said head leading from said single duct to said inner flame orifice, a second passage co-axial to and relatively shorter than said central passage and communicating with said outer flame orifice, said passages and said head being angularly inclined with respect to said duct, a by-pass in said head leading from said central passage to said sec- 0nd passage, and an adjustable valve means mounted in said head at a point removed from said second passage for varying the rate of flow in said by-pass, said valve means comprising a threaded cylindrical element having one end extending into said by-pass and the other end extending exteriorly of said head.
