This invention relates to a double ignition system for internal combustion engines.
Double ignition systems are already known wherein two commutator make and break de` vices are used together with switching means whereby the devices and circuits can be alternately put into operation.
'I'here are also double ignition systems wherein the two circuits are governed by a single commutator make and break device and used alternately, separate switches being provided for closing and opening the circuit.
The object of the present invention is to ob tain a device whereby a complete change over from one circuit to another can be effected by means of a single switch lever, and the invention consists essentially in the vprovision of a rotary cam which co-operates with two make and break contacts, one for each circuit, a switch lever being provided which, as it is turned, for switching one circuit on and the other oi, simultaneously operates a cam whereby the make and break contact of the circuit to be used is thrown into operation and the other thrown out of operation.
Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a sectional view of the entire apparatus,
Fig. 2 is a detail view of this device,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a disc carrying the make and break contacts.
through a pinion 5 motion is transmitted to the cam I3 on the shaft lo of the .magnet 4'. Pivotally mounted on the outside of the disc II are two spring-controlled members I5 and I5 which 4 bear under the spring pressure against the cam and breaking two ignition circuits one of which is energized by the magnet 4 and the other by a battery 2'I and an induction coil 25. The members I5 and I5 carry for this purpose platinized contacts I4 and I4 respectively which co-operate with corresponding rigid contacts connected to an insulating block I2 mounted on the disc II.A On the opposite side of the disc II there is a switch lever I8 which pivots by means of an annular cam I6 about a support which is coaxial with the cam I3. The members I5 and I5' are provided with iingers which project through aper- \.Fig. 4 is a perspective view seen from the opthe disc a gear wheel 3| through which and.
I3 so as to be rocked by the latter for making tures in the disc I I for engagement with the cam I6, the latter being shaped so that in each end "position of the lever I8 one of the members I5 and I5' is permanently maintained in inoperative position. On a Iurther lever arm connected to the cam I6 there is a Contact member I1 which, as shown in Fig. 5, co-operates with contacts 2| and 22 for connecting either ignition circuits with the distributor I9 whereby the sparking plugs 2U are successively brought into the circuit, the distributor being synchronized in known manner with the cam I3. It will be seen from the diagram 'that a reversal of the lever I8 for changing over from one ignition circuit to the other, at the same time throws the make and break contact of the opposite circuit, out of `voperation.
'I'here is a resistance 26 in the battery circuit and condensers 28 in both circuits. I'he arrows 23 indicate the path of the current .in the magnet. The distributor. I9 operates with sliding brushes 32.
I claim:
1. In a double ignition system for internal combustion engines, in combination, a rotary cam co-operating with two independent make and break contacts, one for each ignition circuit, a distributor common to both ignition circuits, a second camco-operating with contacts for connecting either ignition circuit with said common distributor and adapted simultaneously to render inoperative one of said make and break contacts when the ignition circuit of the other contact is connected, and a single switch lever operative to actuate said second camx 2. In a double ignition system for internal combustion engines, in combination, a rotary cam mounted on one side of a disc and co-operating with two independent make and break contacts, one for each ignition circuit, a distributor common to both ignition circuits, an annular cam in the other side of the disc which is connected to a lever arm carrying a contact member con 55 disc closes a casing in which. a magneti is housed.
