This invention relates to a machine for en graving rings, comprising essentially a striking rod combined with an engravers punch which carries the letter, figure or sign to be punched on the interior of the ring. The latter, in the punching position, rests on an anvil and can be rotated intermittently with a view to the successive punching of the letters or the like thereon.
In the device forming the object of the present invention, the punch is formed on an interchangeable blade and these blades, as required, may be arranged in a holder or magazine displaced in a rectilinear manner so as to facilitate the finding of the successive letters, figures or signs.
The ring is preferably held between three rollers, of which two serve to move it and are mounted on a carriage comprising an intermittent rotation mechanism, while the third roller is mounted on a second carriage, the two carriages being arranged to be displaceable with respect to each other in order to allow the ring to be placed between the three rollers.
One form of construction of the device according to the invention is shown, as an example, in
the accompanying drawings, wherein:-

A stamping rod 2 provided with a striker knob 3 is adapted to slide in the frame I of the machine. A spring 4 serves to return the rod after each letter, figure or sign has been punched on the interior of a ring 5, which rests on an anvil 6.
A nut 3 adapted to take a vernier scale permits the stroke of the rod 2 tobe regulated.
The ring 5 is held between an upper grooved roller 1 and two lower grooved rollers 8, 8 (Fig. 2). The upper roller 1 (Fig. 1) can rotate on an axis l mounted in a carriage 9 adapted to run,on a slide Ill formed on the frame of the machine (see also Figs. 3 and 4).
The lower rollers 8, 8 are fixed on axes l l, H' (Figs. 2, 3, 4) on which are keyed pinions l2 and l2 each engaging with a common pinion l3 integral with a ratchet wheel l4 actuated by a spring pawl I5 pivoted on a push lever l6 movable about a pivot l I of the ratchet wheel I4, with which is associated a spring pawl M By pressing on the push lever [6, the abovedescribed mechanism causes intermittent rotation of the rollers 8, 8 and consequently of the ring 5 to be punched, thus causing it to advance to a position to be punched for each different letter or the like.
The whole mechanism formed by these rollers, pivots, pinions, etc., is mounted on a carriage 9 running on the same slide II! as the upper carriage 9. The two carriages 9, 9 are connected by spiral springs l8 which tend to bring them together (Fig. 3). They can be separated (Fig. 4) by means of a double cam l9 keyed on a pivot 20 controlled by a milled knob 2! (Fig. 1), this cam ac ing. on the one hand, on the pivot l integral with the carriage 9 and, on the other hand, on a stud 22-integral with carriage 9 This separation of the carriages 9 and 9 is necessary for placing the ring 5 between grooved rollers ,l, 8, 8*. Once the ring is placed on the two lower rollers, the cam I9 is brought into the position shown in Fig. 3 and the carriages 9. 9 approach each other in such a manner that the upper roller 1 rests on the ring, which is thus held between the three rollers. In order to move the ring around to a position for punching with a fresh letter or the like. the lower carriage is slightly raised by hand so that the ring does not rub on the anvil 6.
For engraving the letters or the like inside a ring, there are employed interchangeable blades 23, each of which is provided at 23 with a different punch (letter, figure or sign). These punch blades are located one after the other in a notch formed in the blade carrier 24, so that the punch bears on the inner surface of the ring 5 centered between the three rollers (Fig. 1), and the lower semi-circular notch 23 of the blade rests on a projection 25 of corresponding shape formed at the end of a regulating screw 25, which may be raised or lowered slightly by a nut 26 so that the punch is suitably positioned with respect to the ring in order to obtain a good punching action, the blade 23 being cleanly struck at right angles bythe rod 2, the lower edge of which must come completely into contact with the upper edge of blade punch.
To engrave a ring, it is placed between the three rollers after having separated the carriages 9, 9 by manipulating the knob 2| as above described. The exact position of the ring is determined, the desired punch blade 23, the exact 50 position of which is adjusted by means of the regulating nut 26, is placed in the groove of the blade carrier, and the knob 3 is then struck, the length of the stroke of the rod 2 having first been regulated by means of the vernier nut 3. The punch blade is then withdrawn, the ring is moved forward by one notch by means of the push lever [B after having slightly raised the carriage 9 the fresh punch blade is inserted and its position adjusted as before, and the knob 3 is struck, and so on.
To accelerate the selection of the punch blades 23, there may be employed a loader or magazine provided with the complete series of letters, figures, and signs.
Figs. 5 and 6 show a rectilinearly movable magazine comprising a kind of comb 21, the teeth of which are traversed by a rod 28 on which can fit the notches 23 of the punch blades, which are thus engaged between the teeth. (The drawings do not show all the teeth nor all the blades.) On the top of the comb are marked the figures, letters or signs opposite punch blades of the same sign held in the corresponding recess. The magazine can slide in a slot 29 mounted on a blade carrier 24 provided with. the adjusting nut 26 already described. It is thus sufficient to bring the letter or sign selectedopposite the standard mark of the slot 29 and then to lower the corresponding punch blade 23 into the groove of the blade carrier 24. Adjustment is effected by the nut 26 which raises or lowers the whole magazine.
It will be understood that this machine may beadapted for various. methods and forms of execution, and for numerous variations of construction and mounting. On the other hand, without departing from the scope of this invention, the means described or shown by way of example may be replaced by others equivalent thereto andplaying the same part or giving the same result.
It is also obvious that any process, material and product which is adapted to be employed in the construction of this machine may be employed.

1. An improvement in work-supporting structures ,for engraving machines comprising a base, means for firmly and rotatably supporting various sized rings comprising three grooved rollers,
a carriage having two of said rollers mounted thereon, means mounted on said carriage for imparting an intermittent motion to said rollers, a second carriage having the third of said rollers mounted thereon, said base having a groove formed therein having said two carriages slidably mounted thereon, and said carriages being adapted to be displaceable with respect to each other in order to allow a ring to be placed between said three rollers.
2. An improvement in work-supporting structures for engraving machines comprising a base, means for firmly and rotatably supporting various sized rings comprising three grooved rollers, a carriage having two of said rollers mounted thereon, means mounted on said carriage for imparting an intermittent motion to said rollers, a second carriage having the third of said rollers mounted thereon, said base having a groove formed therein having said two carriages slidably mounted thereon, studs mounted on one face of said carriages, a double cam rotatably mounted on said base and bearing on said studs whereby upon rotation of said cam said carriages .are separated, and springs connected at 5,
each end to one of said carriages for drawing said carriages toward one another.
3. An improvement in work-supporting structures for engraving machines comprising a base, means for firmly and rotatably supporting various sized rings comprising three grooved rollers, a carriage having two of said rollers mounted thereon, means mounted on said carriage for imparting an intermittent motion to said rollers comprising a ratchet wheel, a spring pawl for actuating said ratchet wheel, a pinion formed with said ratchet wheel, pinions operatively connected to each of said two rollers and in connection with said first pinion, a second carriage having a third of said rollers mounted thereon,
said base having a groove formed therein having said two carriages slidably mounted thereon, and said carriages being adapted to be displaceable with respect to each other in order to allow a ring to be placed between said three rollers.
