Description

Dec. 27, 1938. J. PFLEGE'R ET AL 2,141,314
PAPER ROLL HOLDER Filed June 16, 1937 Patented Dec. 27, 1938 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE} PAPER ROLL HOLDER;
Joseph Pfleger and Marius Marrapese,
. Cleveland, Ohio This invention, as indicated, relates to a paper roll holder. More particularly, it includes a receptacle made ofa body section and a cover section each preferably formed of sheet material and having a member serving as a brace and also as a roll support. The invention also includes the method of forming and uniting the parts and engaging the roll'supporting elements therein, as 'well as the combination of the structural features themselves.
The roll holder, while particularly intended for rolls of paper, such as toilet paper; paper towels and the like, is not to be wholly limited to such use, as it may be found of utility in holding rolls of paper with adhesive on one side'for fastening paper wrappings' on parcels, the smaller roll in the casing in such instance providing'a moistening means. It also is'adapted to hold cloth, or fabric tape, or for many similar purposes.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a housing for paper rolls and the like which may be made of a minimum number of parts at low cost, and which at the same time will be a durable structure, of ornamental appearance, and adapted to withstand severe service without requiring replacement or repair.
Another object of the invention is to provide a structure adapted to receive a'roll of paper within the same, such roll being supported so as to readily revolve when drawn upon at its free edge.
Another object of. the invention is to provide a housing for a roll of paper, which may be formed with a body portion of sheet metal, a cover section of sheet metal, each having parts coacting to form a hinge, and having a bracing member which completes the housing structure and at the same time provides for the support and feeding of the paper roll. 7
Another object of the'invention is to provide a unitary structure of sheet metal providing a brace for the housing and extension arms with means to receive the supporting bar forthe roll of paper.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combined housing brace paper roll support and auxiliary roll support formed from a single sheet metal section.
Other and further objects of the invention will appear in the course of the following description.
To the accomplishment of the foregoingand related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, the annexed drawing and the following description setting forth in detail certain structures embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but several of various forms in which the principle of the'inve'ntion may be used.
In said annexed drawing:
Figure l is a front elevation, broken away in part, showing a structure embodying the principles of the invention;
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 8 is a perspective view, broken away in part, showing the combined housing brace, paper roll holder, and auxiliary roll holder, with the roll supporting bars in position;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view of portions of the body and cover members of the housing il- 1 lustrating the method of forming the hin and ,Figure 5'is'a fragmentaryview showing th end portion of the structure illustrated ill-Figure4. V
As is clearly shown in the drawing, the device 6, I. The side walls-at their forward free edges 1;,
are curvedon a long radius to afford a support for the curved cover member presently to be described. The back wall is preferably provided with a rearwardly offset area to form an open loop 8 which may engage over an upwardly directedbracket member (not shown), such bracket being secured to the wall or some other point of support. The body portion is entirely open at the bottom, there being no bottom wall, but merely the back wall and two side walls, above referred'to. A plurality'of screw holes 9 may also be provided as alternative means for securing the device to a point of support. In the latter instance, the device is not readily removable as is the case when" the loop and bracket method cover and at the same time reinforce the same, a
pairof narrow parallel metal strips II are engaged centrally of the cover member, being held frictionally' by the engagement of inturned ends on said strips or by welding or otherwise. In
companion hinge members at the upper edge of the back of the body member. These hinge members on the cover may be in the form of curved ears IZ'bent inwardly toward the under side of the cover after passing through marginal apertures I3 in alinement therewith'formed adjacent the top edge of the back wall of the body member immediately below a beaded or inturned top edge M, as best seen in Figures" 4 and 5.
In order to firmly position the free forward edges of the side walls of the body, a bracing member 4 is provided, such member being formed of a sheet metal strip of special shape and notched and shaped inthe manner best seen by reference to Figure 3 of the drawing.
Thus, it will be noted that the bracing strip has a forward section I?) of full width but severed at the lower front edges from the metal of the side portions l6, H, which ,are also formed with slits parallel to the bottomto provide resilient projecting strips 2!, 22, which are shortened at their free endsto permit the upper areas of the side portions to be bowed outwardly from the l duced shaft ends of a roller 25, said apertures 23,
24, preferably somewhat elongated and inclined slightly downwardly toprovide a limited degree of frictional contact of the roller 25 with the free end of the paper as it is being withdrawn. This roller .25 may be a, hollow perforated metal roller carrying some material having an, agreeable odor, or when the device is to be used as a moistener, may be used as a perforated moisture channel. It may in such case be covered with sponge rubber and a moisture supplying conduit may engage through the ends of the roller, having a rotatableconnection of conventional form.
The side portions of the bracing member 4 beyond the position of the projecting strips 2!. 22,
are of full width but have beveled ends providing short horizontal top edgeswl'iich are formed with recessesornotches 26 within which the ends of the paper roll support bar 21 are received. At
points spaced from the ends of the bar 21, disklike membersZB are provided, such members preferab y being cup-shaped members. which the auxiliary roll 25 and the front. section l5 of the bracing member'll. Thefree end of the paper projects below the open underside of the body portion' of the device, as there is no bottom wall whatsoever. Theauxiliary roll '25 is engaged' between the .resilient strips" 21, 22, by
spreading the latter apart and engaging the ends of'the shaft in the apertures provided in said strips. 7 V
The paper roll can be readily placed in or removed from the housing by lifting the cover 3.
The ends of the bar 21 fit freely within the .the action of drawing on the free end of the paper on the roll will rotate and agitate the roller 25 and cause it'to actively impart the odor to the paper passing therereover. This is a more effective means of disseminating the odor than where the roll supporting member 21 ismade hollow; The roll 25 may have its outer surface formed of compressed odor-imparting or germicidal material. In place 'of' a single roll 25, two closely spaced parallel rolls may be provided, the free end of thepaper roll in such instance being threaded between such rolls, which would be supported in pairs of oval apertures in the ends 'of the resilient projecting strips 2!, 22, respectively.
Other modes of applying the principle of our invention may be employed instead of those explained, change being made as regards the structures herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
We therefore particularly, point out and distinctly claim as ourinvention:
1. A housing for a paper roll comprising a member of sheetmaterial providing a back and side walls, a member of sheet material providing a cover section over the top and front areas of said first-named. member, and a combined bracing and roll supporting member, the roll supporting member being formed with a central portion serving as'a bracing member connected to the forward free ends of said first-named'memmember being formed with a central portion serving as a bracing member connected to the forward free ends of said first-named member adjacent the lower portion thereof and having inwardly extending arms displaced inwardly from said side walls, and means on said extending arms to cooperate with a paper roll supporting roller, and having extension arms associated with said first-named arms to support an auxiliary roller. r
3. A housing for a paper roll comprising a memberof sheet material providing a back and side walls, a member of sheet material providing a a cover section over the top and front areas of said first-named member, and a' combined bracing and roll supporting member, the roll supporting member being formed with a central portion serving as a bracing member connected to the forward free ends of said first-named member adjacent the lower portion thereof and having inwardly extending arms displaced inwardly from said side walls, and means on said extending arms to cooperate with a paper roll supporting roller, and having extension arms associated with said first-named arms to support an auxiliary roller, such auxiliary roller being disposed in spaced relation to another element of said combined bracing and roll supporting structure to receive the free end of the paper roll intermediate the same.
4. A housing for a paper roll comprising a member of sheet material providing a back and side walls, a member of sheet material providing a cover section over the top and front areas of said first-named member, and a combined bracing and roll supporting member, the roll supporting member being formed with a central portion serving as a bracing member connected to the forward free ends of said first-named member adjacent the lower portion thereof and having inwardly extending arms displaced inwardly from said side walls, and means on said extending arms to cooperate with a paper roll supporting roller, and having extension arms associated with said first-named arms to support an auxiliary roller, such auxiliary roller being disposed in spaced relation to the central section of said combined bracing and roll supporting structure to receive the free end of the paper roll intermediate the same.
