Description
O. J. SHAPE OARLOCK SLEEVE Dec. 20, 1938.
Filed March 4, 1938 In venor @Scar J Ska/6e u N .n
I By @una MIJ A orneys Patented Dec. 20, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in oar lock sleeves for use on oars and the object thereof is the provision of an inexpensive, practical device of this character which may be readily and securely attached to the oar without necessitating the driving of a large number of nails in the oar and around the same and thereby weakening the oar as is the common practice.
To the accomplishment of the above and subordinate objects presently appearing a preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing set forth in detail in the following description, and defined in the claim appended hereto.
In said drawing:-
Figure l is a view in side elevation of an oar equipped with my improved oar lock sleeve,
Figure 2 is a View in transverse section taken on the line 2 2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in longitudinal section taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, the oar lock Sleeve of my invention comprises a cylin- 3 drical member l preferably formed of rubber, or
rubber composition, reinforced as at 2, with fabric or other suitable material, and having a lateral flange 3 at one end thereof. The member is molded to impart thereto an inherent cylindrical form and longitudinally split along one side, as at Li, for opening to clasp the same around the oar shaft 5.
The member I is made inv the proper size to flt around the shaft 5 with its split edges abutting and is secured to said shaft by means of a row of nails 6 driven through the same adjacent its split edges, upon each side of the split 4, and a single 5 row of nails 1 driven therethrough diametrically opposite the split 4.
As will be understood the member I is clamped around the shaft 5 with the flange 3 toward the inner end of the oar and is designed to protect 10 said shaft against injury from the oar locks, not shown, the flange 3 coacting with said oar lock to prevent the oar from sliding out of the same.
My invention will, particularly in view of its simple nature, be readily understood from the foregoing Without further explanation.
Manifestly changes in form and feature described may be resorted to Without departing from the inventive concept and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claim.
What I claim is:-
An oar lock sleeve for attachment to the shaft of an oar comprising a cylindrical member of rubber split longitudinally along one side and of the appropriate size to surround said shaft with its split edges abutting, said member being molded to impart thereto an inherent cylindrical form, and having a lateral flange at one end, thereof, and a reinforcing element extending throughout the same and into said flange.
