L. COATALEN LIQUID FUEL ADMISSION VALVE FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES Fiem Nov. 27, 1955 V/r/ WSSSQ nu IIIIIIIII Patented Apr'. 14, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LIQUID. FUEL ADMISSION vALvE Fon INTERNAL conmUs'rIoN ENGmEs Louis Coatalen, Saint-Ouen, France spp'lieatianlNovmm 21,1935, senat-No. sans: In Great Braam May 31, 1934 1 claiml (Cl. 251-132) engines. The valve vcomprises a hollow stem 5 adapted to control the admission aperture to the enginecylinder, both ends of the stem being exposed to fuel oil pressure. A
Difnculty is sometimes experienced through the leakage of fuel oil past the valve stem to the exterior of the guide piece through which the stem is inserted, and the'subsequent mixing of the fuel oill which has escaped with the lubrieating oil supplied to the valve operating mechanism. The object of the present invention is l5 to enable any fuel oil which escapes past the valve stem to be collected without risk of admixture with other oil and to be returned to the fuel voil reservoir or other receptacle.
The invention consists in an improvement in 20 or modification of the liquid fuel admission valve claimed in the specification above referred to, comprising the combination with a hollow member carrying a guide for the valve stem, of an oil chamber arranged at the upper end of the said hollow member and adapted to enclose a part of the said guide and of operating mechanism for the valve stem, and an'oil discharge conduit leading from the chamber, the varrangement being such that the fuel voil which leaks past the valve stem can 'accumulate in the chamber. and the oil thus accumulated or some of it can escape from the chamber through the conduit. f
'I'.he accompanying drawing illustrates one manner of carrying the improvement into effect.
Referring to the drawing, the valve guide a through which the valve stem bis inserted is carried in a hollow cylindrical member c adapted to be attached to one end or the engine cylinder 4 (not shown). At its outer end this member c is extended to form a chamber. d which surrounds the guide a and also encloses a part of the'valve operating mechanism. The outer v'end' -of the chamber may be fitted with a cover piece e.
accumulate inlthis chamber without risk of con-v y tamination by lubricating oil, and the oil thus accumulated or some of it can be returned by a pipe ,f or other conduit to the fuel oil reservoir or f5 fuel oil.which leaks past the valve stem can or the cover e, of the chamber d. One pair of ends of the rods are connected to the valve stem by an annular part h which embraces the part a and which supports a part p extending laterally from each side of the valve stem -through a trans- 5 verse aperture s in the part a. By this arrangement of parts h, p, a fulcrum-like connectionis provided between the valve stem'b and its operating part vh, so that the lifting of the valve in its guide is effected without imposing any lat-1o eral pressure on the valve. The valve is moved on to its seating by a springq acting on another l annular member r which bears on the upper side of the projection p. The other pair of ends of the rods extend beyond the upper end of the 1li chamber and are connected to actuating' rockers -or other operating means situated adjacent to the outer endofthe valve guide or oil-chamber.: As in my previous invention, the fuel oil is conducted b'y a Apipe k to a chamberl in the outer end izoV of the valve guide, and from thence it flowsy down the hollow interior of the valve stem to another chamber m at the end adjacent to the engine cylinder, the base of this chamber being formed by the nozzlen which is controlled by the valve. 26
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire, to secure by Letters 'Patent isz- In fuel admission valves for compression ignition engines, a hollow valve stem having one end 30 closed and anoutlet adjacent the closed end, said valve stem being disposed so that both ends are exposed to fuel oil pressure and being arranged to-control the admission apertureto the engine cylinder, a hollow member, a guide for the valve 35 stem carried by said hollow member, an oil chamber arranged at `thevupper'end of'said hollow member and adapted to enclose a part of the said guide and a part of the operating mechanism for the valve stem, and an oil discharge 40 conduit leading' from the chamber, said valve stem guide having a transverse aperture, an annular member embracing the guide, a lateral projection on -the valve stem passing through an aperture in the guide, the under side of which 5 projection is supported by the annular member,
means acting on said annular member for lifting the valve stem,A another annular member supported on the upper side of the said projection, and a spring acting on this latter annular member for moving the valve stem t'o the closed position, substantially as described..
LOUIS COATALEN.
