Description
April 7, 1936. .J. w. SMl'l 'H BOTTLE CLOSURE Filed July 2, 1955 v INVENTOR,
Patented Apr. I 7, 19 36 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application July 2,1935, Serial No. 29,474 5 Claims. (01. 215-100) This invention relates to improvements in bottle closures.
The primary object 01 my invention is to provide an improved bottle closure comprising a re- 5 movable cap, normally enclosing-the discharge end of the bottle, having means extending into the bottle for conveniently removing the contents from the bottle. v
Another object of my invention is to provide a m closure for bottles containing catsup or other semi-fluid materials, embodying a hand operated cap for closing the discharge end of the bottle, and a hoe member carried by the cap for conveniently extracting desired portions of the bot- 15 tles contents.
Other objects and advantages oi?v the invention will in part become apparent and in part will be referred to in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements 20 of parts, and application of principles constituting the invention; and thescope of the protection contemplated will appear from the claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a bottle, showing 25 my improved closure means applied thereto;
. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the neck of the bottle;
Fig. 3 is section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and
3 F1liigz. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-40! Referring to the drawing the numeral l designates a bottle having a threaded neck 2. Screwed onto the top end of the neck 2, or other- 35 wise suitably secured thereto, is a collar 3 having an inwardly disposed annular flange 4 which normally overlies at least a part of a top edge of the neck. The flange 4 of the collar is provided with a diametrically extending strip 5 which has 40 a hole 6 of suitable size located centrally therein. Movable extending through the hole 6 is a rod 1 having a concave cap 8 secured to its upper end and a semi-circular or other suitably shaped disc or hoe 9 secured to its lower end. The top 45 side of the concave cap is provided with a finger piece Ill which may be conveniently grasped by the thumb and forefinger when the contents of the bottle are to be extracted. The rod 1 is of considerable length, thereby permitting the hoe 50 9 to normally extend well into the neck of the bottle. The inwardly disposed. annular flange 4 is formed with. a raised ring II which tends to divert any of the bottle's contents collecting on its inwardly sloping side, back into the bottle 55 after the latter is placed in an upright position.
' of the collar.
Sons not to cause any part of the contents of the bottle adhering to the top surface of the collars flange 4, to be squeezed down the side of the said collar and thereby give the bottle an unsightly appearance, the underneath surface-o1 5 the cap is normally held well above the said flange and the latters raised ring II. The downwardly disposed annular flanged part of the cap 8 rests upon the upper outside surface of the collar 3 and normally maintains the underneath surface 10 of the cap 8 in spaced relation to the flange 4 During the normal use of the device a certain small part of the bottles semifluid contents reaching that part of the collar 3 with which the cap 8 engages, enables a seal or air-tight closure to be effected when the cap is in an engaging position with the collar, thereby preventing evaporation of the bottles contenta. The various parts of the device, excepting the rod 1, are preferably made from bakelite, hard rubher, celluloid or other suitable material.
When removing portions of the semi-fluid material from the inside of the bottle, the said bottle is first held in an upturned position so the contents flow into the neck thereof. The cap-8 is then manipulated in such a manner that the hoe 9 causes the material to be moved from the neck of the bottle through one or both oi the apertures located between the flange 4 and its diametrically disposed strip 6.
It is then apparent to those skilled in the art that the bottle closure shown and described herein is susceptible to various changes in regard to form, shape and minor details oi construction, so for these and other apparent reasons I desire it understood that the principles of my invention shall be included broadly within the spirit of the appended claims rather than confined to the exact disclosures herein made.
Having described my invention what I claim is: I
l. A bottle closure comprising a collar adapted to be secured about the neck of a bottle, a guide member carried by the collar, a rod mounted for reciprocating movement in-the guide member, a closing cap secured to one end of the rod, and a hoe member secured to the opposite end of the rod.
2. A bottle closure comprising a collar adapted to be secured about the neck of a bottle, a guide member secured to the collar, a reciprocating rod movably mounted in the guide member, a hoe member secured to one end of the rod, and a concave closing cap secured to the opposite end of the rod, the said closing cap being so shaped that its concave underneath side is normally raised above the top edge of the. collar.
3. A bottle closure comprising a collar adapted to be secured about the neck of a bottle, a guide member secured to and extending diametrically across the top edge of the collar, the said guide member having a centrally disposed hole therein, a. reciprocatory rod mounted within the hole in the guide member, a closing cap secured to one end of the rod and a hoe secured to the opposite end of the rod.
4. A bottle closure comprising a collar adapted to be secured about the neck of a bottle, a guide member on the collar, a reciprocating shank mounted in the guide member, a concave closing cap secured to one end of the shank, the said cap being of concave shape and having a depending annular flange which normally engages with the sides of the collar, that part of the cap which is located within the flange being normally raised above the collar, and a hoe on the opposite 5 end of the shank.
5. A bottle closure comprising a collar adapted to be secured about the neck of a bottle, a raised ring shaped member formed at the top edge of the collar for diverting a fluid toward the interior 10
