The present invention relates to an apparatus for removing the cores from grapefruits and the like and the object of the invention resides in the provision of an apparatus of this nature which includes a motor operated means mounted in such a manner that said means may be moved toward a grapefruit and forced therethrough for removing the core therefrom.
Another important object of the invention resides in the provision of an apparatus of this nature which is thoroughly efficient in use and operation, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to handle, reliable and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

o Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes the base in the upper surface of which is a depression 6. A tubular standard l rises from one end of the base and telescopically receives a rod 8 which has a 35 right angular extension 9. A stop 4collar I0 is mounted on the rod 8 and held in adjusted position by a set screw II. A coil spring I2 is mounted in the tubular standard and urges the rod 8 upwardly to the normal position shown in 40 Figures l and 2. An electric motor or other suitable prime mover I4 is mounted on the end of extension 9 by means of a collar I5 and a set screw I6. A handle I'I is on the upper end of the motor. An armature shaft I8 depends from 45 the motor through a cylindrical bearing member I9 which has a vertical groove 2l) therein. A tube 2l is extended over the bearing and has a pin 25 received in the groove 20. Diametrically opposite the pin is a slit 26 with ears 21 extending 50 outwardly therefrom to receive a bolt 28 which may be tightened to clamp the tube about the bearing and allow the same to depend therefrom. iIhe lower end of the tube is sharpened as denoted at 29. On the armature shaft I8 is a drill 55 auger 30.
The grapefruit is placed in the recess 6 with the core disposed vertically. The operator then starts the motor and using the handle Il presses the apparatus downwardly against the tension of the spring I2 causing the tube and the drill 5 auger to remove the core from the grapefruit and to deliver the same upwardly so that it will be dispensed out througha tube 3I formed integrally with the tube 2I at the upper portion thereof and inclining outwardly and downwardly 10 therefrom.
It is thought that the. construction, operation, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof. 15
The present embodiment of the invention has been described in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the 20 invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what is -claimed as new is:
1. Means for removing cores from fruit, comprising a, base having a recess therein for receiving portion of a fruit, a tubular upright connected to the rear of the base, a spring in the upright, a rod extending into the upright and having its upper end horizontally arranged, a motor including a casing, means for attaching the casing to the horizontal part of the rod, said casing having a depending part, a tube, means for detachably connecting the upper end of the tube with the depending part of the casing, a shaft driven from the motor and journaled in the depending part and extending into the tube, said shaft havirng an auger part located in the tube, with its lower end slightly projecting from the lower end of the tube, said lower end of the tube being provided with a cutting edge, and a handle at the upper end of the motor casing for permitting pressure to be applied to the casing to force the parts downwardly, whereby the auger and the tube will pass through the fruit on the base to remove the core therefrom, and a discharge spout connected with the upper end of the tube.
2. A device for removing cores from fruit comprising a tubular upright, a spring in said upright, a rod movable endwise in the upright and superimposed on said spring and having a lateral upper portion, a motor including a casing attached to said lateral portion of the rod, a tube connected with and depending from the. motor casing, a shaft driven from the motor and journaed in and depending from the motor casing, and an auger located in the tube and carried by said shaft, whereby when downward pressure is exerted on the motor casing the tube and auger will be forced through fruit disposed below the same.
3. A device. for removing cores from fruit comprising a tubular upright, a spring in said upright, a rod movable endwise in the upright and superimposed on said spring and having a lateral upper portion, a motor including a casing attached to said lateral portion of the rod, a tube connected with and depending from the motor 5 casing, a shaft driven from the motor and journaled in and depending from the motor casing, and an auger located in the tube and carried by said shaft, whereby when downward pressure is exerted on the motor casing the tube and auger 10 will be forced through fruit disposed below the same; the said tube being provided with a lateral discharge spout.
