1 Claim.
rThis; invention relates to a holder for sandpaper, polishing cloths or the like, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of the class referred to by means of which sandpaper and the like may be used expeditiously and economically without likelihood of injury to the hands or fingers when the material carried by the holder is employed for cleaning, polishing and abrading.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of the class referred to including a pair of detachably connected sections between which the lengthwise marginal portions of the polishing, cleaning or abrading material may be firmly anchored, and with the holders so formed that the material anchored thereto may be readily replaced when its eificiency has become impaired.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of the class referred to which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly eflicient in its use, readily assembled and inexpensive to manufacture.
To the above ends essentially, and to others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of such parts, and such combination of parts which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

Referring to Figures 1 to 5, the holder includes a top section 8 and a bottom section 9 which when the holder is set up are arranged in superposed relation with respect to each other. The sections 8, 9 are of rectangular contour and of the same Width and length. The section 8 is of less thickness than the section 9. Preferably the sections 8, 9 are formed of wood, but any suitable material may be employed therefor.
' Positioned against and coext'ensive with the lower face of section 9 is a cushioning member I0 preferably in the form of a web of cork of a thickness materially less than that of said section. At the junction of the transverse and longitudinal medians of the section 9, an opening Il is formed in the latter, and which Vextends from the lower to the upper face of said section. The wall of the opening I I at the lower end of the 5 latter is in the form of a counter sink I2. Extending through section 9 from its lower face and projecting beyond its upper face is a screw I 3 having an elongated shank IQ of uniform diameter and threaded throughout. The screw I3 10 includes a tapered head I5 at the lower end of shank Ill and which is countersunk in the lower end of opening il. The shank Ii has threaded engagement with the wall of opening ll. The corners of section 9 are sharp. The edges of the 15 member i il are flush throughout with the side and end faces of section 9.
The section 8 has its upper side and end corners rounded as at I5. The section 8 is formed with an upstanding semi-oval shaped narrow slot 20 i6 closed at one end, as at Il and open at its other end. The slot I8 is disposed lengthwise of section 8 and has its lengthwise center at the longitudinal median of said section. The transverse median of section 8 intersects slot I6 be- 25 tween the transverse median and closed end I'I of the latter. The slot I6 is of less height than the height and opens at its bottom at the lower face of section 8. The height of slot I 6 is slightly greater than half the height of section 8. The 30 upper face of section 8 has formed therein a circular recess I8, the aXis of which is arranged at the intersection of the transverse and longitudinal medians of section 8. The depth of recess I8 is less than half the height of section 8. EX- 35 tending from the upper to the lower face of and arranged between the transverse median and one end of section 8 is a circular opening I 9 of a diameter less than that of recess I8. The wall 28 of opening I9 intersects at spaced points the wall 40 2I of the recess I8, as well as intersecting the bottorn 22 of recess I8. The wall 20 of opening I9 merges into the ends of the walls of slot I6 at the open end of the latter. The upper end of slot it opens into recess I8 through the bottom 45 22 of the latter.
The recess I8 coacts with the upper part of opening I9 to provide the section 8 in its upper portion with an upper substantially key-hole shaped part. The slot I6 coacts with the lower 50 part of opening I9 to provide the section 8 in its lower portion with a lower substantially key-ho1e shaped part. The upper key hole shaped part being of greater area than and is oppositely disposed with respect to the lower key-hole shaped 2 part. The said parts each include a narrow and a wide portion. The narrow and wide portions of the upper part are arranged in superposed relation respectively with the wide and narrow portions of the lower part.
The screw I3 is of a length to extend into the recess I8 a sufficient distance above the bottom I8 of the latter to receive a threaded binding element 22 which adjustably engages with the screw. The element 22 is in the form of a wing nut and functions to bind against bottom I8 of recess I8 for the purpose of clamping the sections 8 and 9 together. The bottom I8 provides a clamping face. The screw I3, when the sections are clamped together extends upwardly through slot I6. The recess I8 is of a diameter to provide suiiicient clearance to permit of the element 22 being revolved to and from clamping position. When the sections 8 and 9 are to be separated after being released, due to the revolving of element 22 from clamping position, one .of the sections is shifted relative to the other in one lengthwise direction whereby the screw I3 carrying element will be moved from slot I5 and recess I8 into the opening I9 and then one section may be completely separated from the other. The opening I9 is of a diameter to provide for the sluiting of screw I3 with element 22 thereon from out of said opening.
A web 23 of abrading, polishing or cleaning material is illustrated in clamped relation with respect to sections 8 and 9. The web 23 is flush with the ends of sections 8, 9, has bent portions 24 thereof positioned against the sides of section 9 and the side edges of cushion I0, and has bent portions 25 thereof extending inwardly from the upper ends of portions 24. The portions 25 are interposed between the sections 8, 9 and when the latter are secured together by the coaction of screw I3 and element 22, the said portions 25 are clamped rigidly between the sections to anchor the web stationary in enveloping position with respect to section 9.
The modified form of holder shown in Figures 6 and 'l is of the same construction as that shown by Figures 1 to 5 with the exception, that there is extended diametrically of the bottom I8' oi' recess I8 a narrow wear plate 26 of metallic material formed centrally with a transversely disposed slot 2'I which is of the same form as and has its walls register with the walls of slot I6. The plate 21 provides a. clamping face which coacts with the element 22 and screw I3 to clamp the holder sections together. Holdfast device 28 is employed for anchoring plate 26 to section 9. Otherwise than that as stated the form of holder shown in Figures 6 and '7 is the same as that shown in Figures 1 to 5.
What is claimed isz- A holder for the purpose set forth comprising an upper and a lower section arranged in superposed relation for clamping therebetween a web arranged in enveloping position with respect to said lower section, said upper section being formed with means to form an upper substantially keyhole shaped part extending lengthwise thereof and a lower substantially key-hole shaped part extending lengthwise thereof, said parts being oppositely disposed with respect to each other, said lower part communicating throughout its top with said upper part for a portion of the length of the latter, each of said parts including a narrow portion and a wide portion, the wide and narrow portions of said upper part being arranged in superposed relation respectively with the narrow and wide portions of said lower part, the wide and narrow portions of the upper part and the wide portion of the lower part providing clearance for a clamping means, the wide portion of the lower part being flush throughout with the narrow portion of the upper part, said upper section being formed adjacent its top with a clamping face at the bottom of the wide portion of said upper part, and clamping means carried by the lower section and extending through the narrow portion of said lower part and into the wider portion of the upper part and including an adjustable clamping element coacting with said clamping face for releasably coupling said sections together and for releasably clamping said sections to said web.
