This invention relates to fastening inserting machines and is illustrated herein as embodied in a machine particularly adapted to insert fibre pegs in the manufacture of boots and shoes.
While the machine herein disclosed as embodying the present invention is not limited in its utility to the insertion of pegs of the character disclosed and claimed in United States Letters Patent No. 1,729,169, granted September 24, 1929, on an application filed in the name of Fred N. LaChapelle, it has been developed with a view particularly to the insertion of such pegs. When inserting pegs of the character above referred to it is usual to form a hole in the work piece to receive a peg which is then driven into the hole. In some machines separate tools are used to form the holes and to insert the pegs. Such machines are being extensively used and are satisfactory particularly where the hole forming means is utilized to feed the work past the fastening inserting means. In other types of machines a single tool is used to form the fastening receiving holes in the work and to insert the fastenings in the holes. Machines of this latter type operate successfully but when a spring is used to operate the tool is it necessary to provide a relatively complicated mechanism for imparting the proper reciprocating movements of the tool.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved fastening inserting machine simple and efiective in character and of a type well adapted for use in the manufacture of boots and shoes. In accordance with this object a feature of the invention resides in a fastening inserting machine having a tool, means for operating the tool, and connections between the tool and the operating means constructed and arranged to reciprocate the tool to penetrate the work to form a fastening receiving hole and to withdraw the tool from the work during the early portion of the movement of the operating means toward the work and to insert a fastening in the fastening receiving hole during a later portion of said movement. As illustrated the connections between the tool and the operating means comprise a jointed link or toggle which is arranged in straightened condition during the hole forming operation but which is arranged to be collapsed or broken to withdraw the tool from the work so that upon further movement of the operating means, the member carrying the tool is engaged directly by the operating means thus again forcing the tool downwardly when it inserts a peg or other suitable fastening in the hole. In the illustrated machine fastenings are fed into a fastening receiving passage which opens into a passage through which the tool reciprocates. After the fastening receiving hole has been formed and just prior to the fastening inserting stroke the h; fastening is moved into the tool passage by a 5* spring.
Although the present invention is illustrated as embodied in a fastening inserting machine it is evident that the invention is not limited in its application to such machines but may be apl0" plied to other types of machines if so desired.
With the above and other objects and features in View the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims.

The illustrated fastening inserting mechanism is shown as provided with a single tool l2 which operates both as an awl and asa driver. The tool I2 is connected to an actuating bar I by operating connections which will later be described in detail. The actuating bar may be operated by a cam and. spring I5 in substantially the same manner that the driver bar is operated in the machine disclosed in United States Letters Patent No. 1,327,196, granted J anuary 6, 1920, upon an application filed in the name of Matthias Brock.

The illustrated mechanism is shown as being mounted in a casing I6 provided with a front cover I8 which is secured to the casing l6 by suitable screws 28. The casing may be secured to the front of the head of a machine of the general character disclosed in the above-mentioned Letters Patent. The actuating bar I4 is mounted to reciprocate in ways formed in an upwardly extending portion ll of a casing IS, the front of said ways being closed by a cover 22. The lower end of the actuating bar [4 is provided with a pair of rearwardly extending lugs 24 which form bearings arranged to receive a short shaft or pin 26. A link 23 is provided at its upper end with a hole to receive the short shaft 26 which is keyed to the link 28 by a pin 30, the link 28 being positioned between the lugs 24. The lower end of the link 28 is provided with an enlarged portion 32 (Fig. 2) having a hole arranged at each end to receive headed studs 34 secured to the portion 32 by pins 33. A pair of links 36 is pivotally secured to the enlarged portion 32 of the link 28 by the studs 34. The lower end of each link 33 is pivotally secured to a slide 38 by studs 48 extending through and fastened to rearwardly projecting lugs 42 by pins 44. Thus the links 28 and 33 together form a toggle by which the bar 14 is connected to the slide 38. The slide 38 is mounted for reciprocation in ways 46 formed in the front portion of the casing l6. The links 28 and 36, described above, form a connection arranged to reciprocate the slide 38 which carries the tool l2 thereby operating the tool to form fastening receiving holes in a work piece, to withdraw the tool from the work, and then to move the tool toward the work thereby to insert a fastening in the fastening receiving hole. During the hole forming operation the links 28 and 36 are in line or straight; but when the tool l2 has penetrated the work the jointed link is broken by engagement of rolls 48 carried by links 36, with co-operating cam surfaces 58, best shown in Fig. 3. The cam surfaces 38 are formed on blocks 52 which are adjustably secured to the front cover [8 by bolts 54 passing through slots 56 When the actuating bar l4 and the link mechanism secured thereto are moved downwardly from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 4, the roll 48 on each of the links 36 strikes its cooperating cam surface 58, thereby breaking the jointed link. Further downward movement causes the links 28 and 36 to assume the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. The rolls 48 then strike the top surface of blocks 36 adjustably secured to each side of the casing it by threaded studs 58, as shown best in Fig. '7. The links 36 are swung about the axis of the rolls 48, thus causing the slide 33 to be moved upwardly into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5. The parts of the device are now in position to permit a fastening to be moved into the path of movement of the tool l2.
The lower portion of the actuating bar I4 is enlarged, as shown at 59 in Fig. 2, and is provided with tongues 63 which fit into guideways formed in the front part of the casing l6. The rear part of this enlarged lower portion is cut 3 and 4, to receive the upper end of the driver slide 38. When the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 5 just prior to the fastening inserting stroke the actuating bar [4 and the slide 38 are in engagement with each other and further downward movement of 1 the actuating bar 14 is transmitted directly to the slide 38 which is moved downwardly to insert a fastening flush with the surface of a work piece 6| resting against the lower end of a nozzle 82, as shown in Fig. 6. The nozzle 62 is formed in the plate 64 which is secured to the lower end of the casing [6 by screws 86. The parts of the fastening inserting mechanism are now in the position shown in Fig. 6. When the actuating bar 54 is moved upwardly the parts will move as a unit until the rolls 48 engage the cam surfaces 58. The links 28 and 36 are then swung in a counterclockwise direction from the full line position, as shown in Fig. 5, to the dotted line position. The actuating bar continues its upward movement and the counterclockwise movement of the links 23, 33 will continue until the links are in line or straightened, as shown in Fig. 4, the slide 38 remaining stationary during this time. The bar M then continues up, to its top-most position, as shown in Fig. 4, the parts of the machine returning to their initial positions ready for another cycle of operation.
The fastening feeding mechanism will now be described. A plate 14 is secured to the front cover l8 and to the casing l6 by screws 16. A forwardly projecting member 33, formed as a part of the plate '54, is provided with a fastening guiding passage 88. The upper end of the member i8 is threaded to receive a coupling 82 which secures the end of a fastening guiding tube 84 to the member 18. Fastenings may be delivered to the fastening guiding tube 84 by any suitable fastening delivering mechanism. For example, the fastening delivering mechanism disclosed in an application for United States Letters Patent Serial No. 737,180 filed July 27, 1934 in my name is particularly adapted to deliver fastenings to the fastening inserting mechanism disclosed in this application. A fastening 86 is delivered into the fastening guiding tube 84 at the beginning of each cycle of operation of the fastening inserting instrumentalitiesof the machine. The fastening 86 is fed through the guiding tube 84 into the passage 83 and is forced into the position shown in Fig. 3 by compressed air, as disclosed in the above-mentioned application. The fastening 86 is held against the driver l2 by a spring 88 which is secured to the plate 14 by a screw 90. The spring 88 is provided at 82 with a portion which is adapted to support the fastening 86. During downward movement of the driver [2 to form a fastening receiving hole in the work, a portion Bl of the driver 12 engages the fastening 86 and causes the fastening to be moved into the position shown in Fig. 4. The extreme lower end 94 of the spring 88 is offset relatively to the portion 92. Thus, when the fastening is moved into the position shown in Fig. 4, the lower end of the spring 88 will be forced toward the left. When the driver I2 is moved upwardly after a fastening receiving hole has been formed in the work piece and the lower end of the driver l8 has passed beyond the upper end of the fastening the spring 88 will move the fastening into the path of movement of the driver l8. After the fastening has been inserted the parts of the machine are returned to their initial positions in readiness for another cycle of operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A machine having a tool, means movable toward a work piece for operating the tool, and connections between the tool and the operating means constructed and arranged to move the tool toward the work and then to move the tool away from the work during the early portion of the movement of the operating means toward the work, and again to move toward the work during a later portion of the movement of said operating means.
2. A machine having a tool, a member arranged for movement toward a work piece to reciprocate said tool, and connections between said tool. and said member constructed and arranged to move the tool toward the work and to withdraw the tool from the work during the early portion of the movement of said member toward the work and again to move said tool toward the work during a later portion of the movement of said member, said connections including members arranged to be swung relatively to each other to withdraw the tool from the work subsequent to the first movement of the tool toward the work.
3. In a fastening inserting machine, reciprocating means for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a member having a fastening guiding passage, a spring member adjacent to the lower end of said passage constructed and arranged to receive a fastening from said passage and to move the fastening into the path of movement of said hole forming and fastening inserting means prior to the fastening inserting operation, and means connected to the hole forming and fastening inserting means for moving the fastening into position to be moved by said spring means into the path of movement of the hole forming and fastening inserting means.
4. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool,
means movable toward a work piece for operating the tool, and connections between the tool and the operating means constructed and arranged to reciprocate the tool to cause the tool to penetrate the work to form a fastening receiving hole and to withdraw the tool from the work during the early portion of the movement of the operating means toward the work and to insert a fastening in said fastening receiving hole during a later portion of said movement.
5. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool operated both as an awl and as a driver, a member movable toward the work for operating said tool, and connections between said tool and said member constructed and arranged to reciprocate the tool to form a fastening inserting hole in a work piece and to withdraw the tool from the work during the early portion of the movement of said member toward the work and to move said tool toward the work during a later portion of said movement to insert a fastening in said hole.
6. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool operating both as an awl and as a driver, a spring operated member arranged for movement toward a work piece for operating said tool, connections between said tool and said member constructed and arranged to reciprocate the tool to form a fastening receiving hole in a work piece and to withdraw the tool from the work during the early portion of the movement of said member toward the work and to move said tool toward the work during a later portion of said movement to insert a fastening in said hole, and means for feeding a fastening into the path of movement of said tool.
7. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool operating both as an awl and as a driver, a member movable toward a work piece for operating said tool, connections between said tool and said member constructed and arranged to reciprocate the tool to form a fastening receiving hole in a work piece and to withdraw the tool from the work during the early portion of the movement of said member toward the work and to move said tool toward the work during a later portion of said movement to insert a fastening in said hole, and means for moving a fastening into the path of movement of said tool when the tool is operating as a driver.
8. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a member arranged for movement toward the work piece to reciprocate said tool, and connections between said tool and said member constructed and arranged to move said tool toward the work to form a fastening receiving hole in the work and to withdraw the tool from the work during a portion of the movement of said member toward the work and to move said tool toward the work during a later portion of the movement of said member to insert a fastening in said hole, said connections including members arranged to be moved relatively to each other to withdraw the tool from the work subsequent to the hole forming operation.
9. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a member arranged for movement toward the work to reciprocate said tool, and connections between said tool and said member comprising a pair of links pivoted to each other and constructed and arranged to move said tool toward the work to form a fastening receiving hole in the work and to withdraw the tool from the work during a portion of the movement of said member toward the work, and to move said tool toward the work during a later portion of the movement of said member to insert a fastening in said hole, said links being arranged to be swung relatively to each other to withdraw the tool from the work between the hole forming and the fastening inserting operations.
10. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a member arranged for movement toward the work to reciprocate said tool, and connections between said tool and said member constructed and arranged to move said tool toward the work to form a fastening receiving hole in the work piece and to withdraw the tool from the work during a portion of the movement of said member toward the work and to move said tool toward the work during a later portion of the movement of said member to insert a fastening in said hole, said connections including a jointed link arranged to be broken to withdraw the tool from the work subsequent to the hole forming operation.
11. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a member arranged for movement toward and away from the work piece to reciprocate said tool, and connections between said tool and said member constructed and arranged to move said tool toward the work to form a fastening receiving hole in the work and to withdraw the tool from the work during a portion of the movement of said member toward the work and to move said tool toward the work during a later portion of the movement of said member to insert a fastening in said hole, said connections including a jointed link arranged in straightened condition during the hole forming operation and arranged to be broken to withdraw the tool from the work after a hole has been formed in the work.
12. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a member arranged for movement toward and away from the work piece, a link connected to said member, a second link pivotally connected to the first-mentioned link and to said tool, and means constructed and arranged to break the connection formed by said links after said tool has formed a fastening receiving hole in the work piece, thereby causing the tool to be withdrawn from the work piece during subsequent movement of said member toward the work.
13. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece, a member arranged for movement toward and away from the work piece, a jointed link connected to said member and to said tool arranged to be in straightened condition to transmit movement of said member to said tool to form a fastening receiving hole in the work piece, and means arranged to break said link subsequent to the hole forming operation thereby causing the tool to be withdrawn from the work.
14. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a member arranged for movement toward and away from the work piece, a jointed link connected to said member and to said tool and arranged in straightened condition to transmit movement of said member to said tool to form a fastening receiving hole in the work, and a cam member arranged after a fastening receiving hole has been formed in the work to break said link, thereby causing the tool to be withdrawn from the work.
15. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a member arranged for movement toward and away from the work piece, a jointed link connected to said member and to said tool, and a cam member arranged after a fastening receiving hole has been formed in said work piece to break said link during a later portion of the movement of said first-mentioned member toward the work causing the tool to be withdrawn from the work.
16. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, an operating member arranged for movement toward and away from the work piece, a jointed link connected to said member and to said tool constructed and arranged to be in straightened condition during the early part of the movement of said member toward the work to cause said tool to form a fastening receiving hole in a work piece, means for breaking the link after the fastening receiving hole has been formed, thereby causing the tool to be withdrawn from the work, and means positively connected to said tool constructed and arranged to be engaged by said member during a later portion of the movement of said member toward the work to move the tool toward the work to insert a fastening in the work.

In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a member arranged for movement toward and away from said work piece, a tool carrier, a pair of links connected to said tool carrier and to said member arranged to be in straightened condition during the early part of the movement of said member toward the work piece to move the tool to form a fastening receiving hole in the work piece, means arranged to break the links after the fastening receiving hole has been formed, means arranged to engage the links to cause the links to be reversed to withdraw the tool from the work during a later portion of the movement of said member toward the work, and means on said member arranged to engage said tool carrier to move the tool toward the work to insert a fastening in the fastening receiving hole during a later portion of the movement of said member toward the work.
18. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a spring operated member movable toward and away from the work piece, a tool carrier, a jointed link connected to said member and to said tool carrier, said link being arranged in straightened condition during the early portion of the movement of said member toward the work to transmit movement of said member to the tool to form a fastening receiving hole in the work piece, a cam member, a roll on said link constructed and arranged to engage said cam member to break the link during a later portion of the movement of said operating member toward the work, means arranged to be engaged by said roll to cause the tool to be withdrawn from the work, and means on said operating member arranged to engage the tool carrier during a later portion of the movement of said operating member to move the tool toward the work to insert the fastening in said fastening receiving hole.
19. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a member arranged for movement toward and away from the work piece to reciprocate said tool, connections between said tool and said member constructed and arranged to move said tool toward the work to form a fastening receiving hole in the work, to withdraw the tool from the work during a later portion of the movement of said member toward the work, and to move said tool again toward the work during a still later portion of the movement of said member to insert a fastening in said hole, said connections including members arranged to be moved relatively to each other to withdraw the tool from the work subsequent to the hole forming operation, and means for moving a fastening into the path of movement of said tool prior to the fastening inserting operation.
20. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a member arranged for movement toward and away from the work piece to reciprocate said tool, connections between the tool and said member constructed and arranged to move said tool toward the work to form a fastening receiving hole in the work, to withdraw the tool from the work during a later portion of the movement of said member toward the work, and to move said tool toward the work during a still later portion of the movement of said member to insert a fastening in said hole, said connections including a pair of links arranged in straightened condition during the hole forming operation and arranged to be broken to withdraw the tool from the work, and means for moving a fastening into the path of movement of said tool prior to the fastening inserting operation.
21. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a member arranged for movement toward and away from the work piece to reciprocate said tool, connections between said tool and said member constructed and arranged to move the tool toward the work to form a fastening receiving hole in the work, to withdraw the tool from the work during a later portion of the movement of said member toward the work, and to move said tool toward the work during a still later portion of the movement of said member to insert a fastening in said hole, said connections including a jointed link arranged in straightened condition during the hole forming operation and arranged to be broken to withdraw the tool from the Work after a hole has been formed in the work, and means for moving a fastening into the path of movement of said tool prior to the fastening inserting operation.
22. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, an operating member arranged for movement toward and away from the work piece, a jointed link connected to said member and to said tool constructed and arranged to be in straightened condition during the early part of the movement of said member toward the work to cause said tool to form a fastening receiving hole in a work piece, means for breaking the link after the fastening receiving hole has been formed, thereby causing the tool to be withdrawn from the work, means positively connected to said tool constructed and arranged to be engaged by said member during a later portion of said member toward the work to move the tool toward the work to insert a fastening in the work, and means for moving a fastening into the path of movement of said tool prior to the fastening inserting operation.
23. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a member arranged for movement toward and away from said work piece to reciprocate said tool, connections between said tool and said member constructed and arranged to move said tool toward the work to form a fastening receiving hole in the work, to withdraw the tool from the work during a later portion of the movement of said member toward the work, and to move said tool toward the work during a still later portion of the movement of said member to insert a fastening in said hole, said connections including members arranged to be moved relatively to each other to withdraw the tool from the work subsequent to the hole forming operation, a member having a fastening guiding passage, and a spring member adjacent to the lower end of said passage constructed and arranged to receive afastening from said passage and to move the fastening into the path of movement of said tool prior to the fastening inserting operation.
24. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a member arranged for movement toward and away from said work piece to reciprocate said tool, connections between said tool and said member constructed and arranged to move said tool toward the work to form a fastening receiving hole in the work, to withdraw the tool from the work during a later portion of the movement of said member toward the work, and to move said tool toward the work during a still later portion of the movement of said member to insert a fastening in said hole, said connections including a pair of links arranged in straightened condition during the hole forming operation and arranged to be broken to withdraw the tool from the work, a member having a fastening guiding passage, and a spring member adjacent to the lower end of said passage constructed and arranged to receive a fastening from said passage and to move the fastening into the path of movement of said tool prior to the fastening insert-ing operation.
25. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a member arranged for movement toward and away from said work piece to reciprocate said tool, connections between said tool and said member constructed and arranged to move said tool toward the work to form a fastening receiving hole in the work, to withdraw the tool from the work during a later portion of the movement of said member toward the work, and to move said tool toward the work during a still later portion of the movement of said member to insert a fastening in said hole, said connections including a jointed link arranged in straightened condition during the hole forming operation and arranged to be broken to withdraw the tool from the work after a hole has been formed in the work, a member having a fastening guiding passage, and a spring member adjacent to the lower end of said passage constructed and arranged to receive a fastening from said passage and to move the fastening into the path of movement of said tool prior to. the fastening inserting operation.
26. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, an operating member movable toward and away from the work piece, a tool carrier, a jointed link connected to said member and to said tool carrier, said link being arranged in straightened condition during the early portion of the movement of said member toward the work to transmit movement of said member to the tool to form a fastening receiving hole in the work piece, a cam member, a roll on said link constructed and arranged to engage said cam member to break the link during a later portion of the movement of said operating member toward the work, means arranged to be engaged by said roll to cause the tool to be withdrawn from the work, means on said operating member arranged to engage the tool carrier during a still later portion of the movement of said operating member to move the tool toward the work to insert the fastening in said fastening receiving hole, a member having a fastening guiding passage, and a spring member adjacent to the lower end of said passage constructed and arranged to receive a fastening from said passage and to move the fastening into the path of movement of said tool prior to the fastening inserting operation.
27. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said hole, ,a
member arranged to receive a fastening and to move the fastening into the path of movement of said tool prior to the fastening inserting operation, means for feeding fastenings to said member, and means constructed and arranged to move the fastening in said fastening receiving member into position to be moved by said fastening receiving member into the path of movement of said tool.
28. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a member arranged to receive a fastening and to move the fastening into the path of movement of said tool prior to the fastening inserting operation, means for feeding fastenings to said member, and means associated with said tool for moving the fastening in said member into position to be moved by said member into the path of movement of said tool.
29. In a fastening inserting machine, a tool for forming fastening receiving holes in a work piece and for inserting fastenings in said holes, a spring member arranged to receive a fastening and to move said fastening into the path of movement of said tool subsequent to the hole forming operation and prior to the fastening inserting operation, and means associated with said tool arranged during the hole forming operation to engage the end of the fastening in said member to move the fastening into position to be moved into the path of movement of said tool by said member.
