COMBINED HANDLE AND LOCK 2 Sheets-Sheet Filed Feb. 20, 1955 INVENTOR.
v BY I My ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 17, 1936 PATENT OFFICE COMBINED HANDLE AND LOCK Edwin North, Rockford, Ill., assignor to National Look 00., Rockford, 111., a. corporation of Illinois Application February 20, 1935, Serial No. 7,384
7 Claims.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in a combined handle and lock and particularly constitutes an improvement over that shown in my companion applications Serial No. 7,383 and Serial No. 7,382 filed February 20, 1935 for Letters Patent of the United States on a combined handle and lock.
The present invention has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly efficient in use and economical in manufacture and in which there is embodied mechanism which is key operated to permit the elevation of a latch plate or bar lift of a door or the like.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of construction and in which:
Fig. 1 is a face view of my combined handle and lock;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional fragmentary detail view of the same taken approximately on line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view of the same taken substantially on line 44 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view of the same, similar to that shown in Fig. 4 showing the parts thereon in different relationship;
Fig. 6 is a sectional detail view similar to that shown in Fig. 5 with certain parts illustrated in different relationship with respect to each other; and
Fig. '7 is a sectional detail view of the same taken substantially on line 'I'I of Fig. 4.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which the preferred form of construction of the invention is illustrated, a handle is indicated at II] and. this handle is provided at one end portion with a body portion providing a housing or enclosure II within which the lock mechanism is adapted to be confined. The ends of the handle terminate into laterally extended portions or cars I2 perforated as at I3 for the projection of headbearing connecting elements I4 which facilitate connecting the handle to a door with which it is intended to be associated.
The housing includes a closure plate I5. Slidably mounted within the housing or enclosure I I and parallel with respect to the plate I5 is a lift I6, the lower end of which provides a lateral extended finger portion I! to facilitate engagement therewith by the index finger of the hand when the hand of the operator grasps the handle ID.
This lift is provided at this lower end portion with a laterally extending pin I8 which is adapted to project through an opening I9 of a latch plate or bar 20.
Within this housing I I is mounted the mechanism for controlling operation of this lift I6 and in this instance this mechanism preferably includes a key guide 2| rotatably supported by the housing I I and the plate I5 as best shown in Fig. 3.
Extending laterally from the plate I5 in spaced relation with respect to each other are pins 22 which are received by slots 23 formed in the opposite end portions of an operating plate 24 adapted to be moved transversely of the pins within the housing I I by the action of the key 26.
Pivotally supported by one of the pins 22, as at 21, are a plurality of lever tumblers 28 each of which includes a slot 29 for the reception, under proper conditions, of the opposite pin of the pins 22, as at 30. On opposite longitudinal sides of the slot 29 there are provided teeth-like stepped portions 3I adapted to engage the lateral stud 32 carried by and movable with the plate 24. These lever tumblers are normally retained in locked relation with respect to the studs 32 by the action of a spring 33, the operation of these lever tumblers being hereinafter more fully described.
The plate 24 provides a depending portion 34 having a laterally extending locking finger 35 normally disposed by the action of a spring 36 in the path of movement of a fin or web 31 provided by the lift I6.
In the lift I6 there is formed an elongated slot 38 and projected through this slot 38 is a pin 39 pivotally supporting a spring urged latch lever 40 having a latch head 4l adapted to have latched engagement with the locking finger 35 whereby to retain the plate 24 in a position from locked engagement with respect to the web 31.
As will be noted in Fig. 5,.when the latching lever 40 is operable upon the locking finger 35 to retain the same from locked position with respect to the web 31, this latching lever is disposed in the path of movement of the web 31; consequently, at a predetermined time the web 31 will operate upon the latching lever 49 to release the plate 24 for movement by action of the spring 36 into locking position with respect to the web 31.
Normally the lever tumblers are disposed out of alignment with respect to each other and are brought into proper alignment with respect to each other only upon the insertion of a proper key in the key guide 2|.
When a proper key is inserted in the key guide 2| and the lever tumblers are brought into proper alignment with respect to each other, the slots 29 thereof Will be disposed to receive the fingers 32 whereby to permit the plate 24 by action of rotation of the key 26 to be moved transversely of the pins 22 into a position to dispose the locking finger from locking position with respect to the web 31 thereby to permit thelift l6 by the action of the hand'of the operator to be moved to release the latch member 20 from a latching position.
When the plate 24 has been moved into its extreme position (into the position in which it is shown in Fig.5) from looking position with respect to the web 27, the same is held in that position against the action of the spring 36 by the latching lever 40. Such lever continues to perform that'function until disengaged from latched engagement with the finger 35 by a slight upward movement of the handle l0 and web 31 at which time the locking finger 35 is free to move by the action' of the spring 36 into locking relation with respect to the web 37 when the lift, I6 is permitted to move to its original position (as in Fig.
4) ,whereupon the key 26 may be returned to its initial position (as in Fig. 4) and removed from the lock cylinder 2|.
' The arrangement obviously provides automatic locking of the lift.
It is apparent that the locking mechanism while being highly efficient in use comprises comparatively'few parts.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for'carrying my in- Ivention into effect,.this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come ithin the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to p otect by Letters Patentis:
