6 Claims.
The present invention relates to an end clamp or holder for pipe coverings, coverings of boilers and the like, and for all other uses where objects are to be clamped about an inner support.
-An object of the present invention is to provide a clamp of this character which not only covers and closes in the end of a pipe covering or the like but which also binds the covering about the pipe or inner support and effectively holds it in position and presents a neat and nished appearance to the covering.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clamp having a collar and a band which when applied are interlocked and wherein the collar effectively holds the band after it has been drawn taut so that the collar and the band are effectively connected together as a unit and serve to not only bind the covering in place but to also close the exposed end of the covering.
Another object of the invention is to provide an end clamp of this character adapted for pipe coverings, jackets or the like wherein the collar portion of the clamp may first be applied to the covering or jacket and is provided with means for engaging the exterior of the covering or jacket to hold the collar from slipping therefrom, and to provide a band adapted to be placed about the covering or jacket over the exterior portions of the collar to firmly hold the same in interlocked engagement with the covering or jacket and at the same time to firmly bind or compress the covering or jacket on the inner pipe or support.
'Ihe invention also aims at the pro-vision of an improved clamp embodying the above characteristics and which comprises but relatively few parts susceptible of economical manufacture and which may be quickly and easily applied to all types of coverings and jackets and which may be manufactured in different sizes to accommodate the various applications in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention will be more fully described hereinafter, and will be more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.

Referring now to the drawings, the present invention is shown as applied to a heat insulating covering I5 which may be applied to a pipe, boiler or the like and which may be of the usual cellular asbestos sheet construction, the covering I5 providing a jacket or other closure adaptable `to various applications.
These coverings I5 are of conventional construction and the invention is applicable to various other types of covers or jackets which may be used.
The device of this invention comprises a collar shown in the present instance as comprising a pair of flat semi-circular sections I6 and I'I which overlap and are hingedly connected by a rivet I8 or the like at one side of the collar and the sections are adapted to be swung apart so as to open the opposite side thereof for the reception of a pipe or other suitable support to which the covering I5 is to be clamped. The flat body part of the collar is of suitable width corresponding to the thickness of the covering I5 to effectively close the end of the covering as shown in Figure 5 and may be reinforced by annular beads or ribs pressed into sections I6 and Il adjacent their inner and outer marginal edges so that the collar itself may be readily cut and stamped from rela.- tively thin sheet metal and may afford the required strength and resistance to clamping action and pressure.
The free ends of the sections I6 and I1 are adapted to overlap when the collar is closed and are provided with perforations or openings I9 adapted to be brought into register for receiving a rivet, pin or other suitable locking device 20 as shown ln Figure 5.
, Disposed into circumferential spaced apart relation at the outer marginal edge portion of the 4collar is a plurality of tongues 2| which extend atV substantially right angles to the plane of the collar and which are adapted to lie flat against the exterior surface of the covering I5, as shown to advantage in Figure 3. Each tongue 2| is provided, as shown in Figure 10, With an inwardly struck or pressed prong 22 adapted to penetrate the exterior surface of the covering I5 for anchoring the collar on the end of the covering to hold the collar from pulling axially away from the covering. Each tongue 2| is also provided at its base portion with an outwardly offset lug 23 extending in the general direction of the outer end of the tongue to receive Vtherebeneath the Ythe collar and the covering.

The outer free end or each tongue 2| is also provided with a lug 25 normally lying substantially in the plane of the tongue and which is adapted to be turned up and over the edge of the band 24 when in place.
The ktongues 2| are of a length relatively to the Width of the band 2| to dispose the band 24 between the lugs 23 and 25 when the latter are turned'o'verY as shown in Figure 4 so as to effectively interlock the band and the collar. Y The clamp of this invention also includes the band 24 and the latter comprises a bendable body strip of suitable length adapted to encircle the covering I 5 and adapted to lie over the outer faces of ,thetongues 2| and to also overlap the outer marginal flange 25 of the collar, the bases of the tongues 2| extending into the marginal flange 26" so that the inner lugs 23 are disposed outwardly of the edge of the flange 26 as clearly shown in Figure 8. The band 24 is adapted to be fitted beneath the inner lugs 23 and the latter serve as guides to insure the correct aline-ment and positioning of the band about the covering and over the tongues and to also insure a close fitting overlapping joint between the band 2|I and ythe flange V26 of the collar. One end of the band 24 is overturned through a flat loop 21 and is secured in overturned position by a punchlrivet 28 or the like for economically securing l*drawn taut therethrough to exert the desired compression upon the covering I5 and the collar. Thefree endV portion of the band 29 is then bent back upon the body portion of the band and is engaged beneath the adjacent inner lug 23 to hold the band in overturned position. The outer lugs 25 on the tongues 2| of the collar are now .turned over about the outer edge of the band 24 and are pressed down against the exterior surface thereof as shown in Figure 4 so as to complete the interlocking of the collar' and band and to hold the latter firmly in clamped position upon The pressure of the band 2l!V is adapted to urgethe tongues 2| .againstthe exterior surface of the covering I5 and to force the prongs 22 of the tongues firmly into the outer surface of the covering and hold the prongs in such position. Thus, the ends of the end of the covering. The band 24 itself is held firmly about the covering andis also firmly held upon the collar and interlocked thereto by the lugs 23 and 25.
The lugs 23 and 25 also serve as locking or holding means for the overturned free end of the band after the latter has been drawn taut to the desired degree, Y
Fronr the above description it is thought that the application of the clamp toa covering or jacket I5 is apparent as the collar and the band are proportioned according to the size of the covering or jacket so that the device may be used in covering pipes, boilers or other supports or objects where an end closure and circumferential binding are required. Inapplication the collar sections I6 and I1 are swung apart so as to pass over the pipe or support and are then swung into closed position with their free ends overlapping as shown in Figure `5 to receive a pin 20 or the Y like so as to hold theV collar from spreading after it is once in place. In the final operation of closing the collar sections I and I1, the tongues4` 2| are brought into engagement with the exterior` surface of the covering I5 and the prongs 22r are forced into more or less biting engagement with the exterior portieri of the covering. The band 24 is now applied about the collar and the covering I5 with one edge of the band engaging beneath the inner lugs 23 and with the fiat loop 21 conveniently disposed between adjacent tongues 2|.
This is for the purpose 'of admitting of the manipulation of the band 24 when drawing the free end 29 thereof through the loop 21 to contact the band and bind it not only on the covering I5 but also against the outer faces of the tongues 2|. This clamping action of the band insures the biting of the prongs 22 into the exterior surface of the covering I 5 to interlock then collar upon the covering. The free end of the band, as above described, is then bent back upon the body portion of the band and is inserted at its inner edge beneath the adjacent inner lug 23. The outer lugs 25 are now turned over into clamped position upon the outer edge portion of the band 24 to complete the assembly. As shown effectively in Figure 5, the end of the covering I 5 is entirely closed and substantially sealed and as the band 24 overlaps the flange 26 of. the collar the frayed ends of the coverings are effectively enclosed and concealed andthe clamp Yforms substantially a unit on the end of the covering and cannot be readily removed therefrom until the band 24 is released. The application or use of the device does not require a great amount of skill as the construction of the parts is such that their interfitting is suggested to the user and the inner lugs 23 readily provide guiding and stop means for insuring the proper position of the band 24 over the tongues 2| and the flange 26.
What is claimed is:-
1. An end clamp for pipe coverings and the like, comprising a flat collar adapted to be placed against the end of a covering and having retaining means overlapping the outer side of ,thecov-4 of the collar to bind said means against the 'covering. Y

A clamp for pipe coverings and the like, comprising a splitrcollar for application to theA Vend of the coveringV about a pipe or the like, 'and a band separate from the Vcollar for Aapplicationfl about the covering adjacent the collar, said collar and band having interlocking means for holding the same together when applied to the covering, said interlocking means comprising tongues extending from the collar perpendicular to the face of the collar, said tongues having lugs thereon adapted to be overturned upon the separate band placed on the tongues for interconnecting the band and collar.
3. An end clamp for pipe coverings and the like, comprising a. split collar for application t0 the end of a covering about a pipe or the like and having a plurality of tongues for overlapping engagement with the outer side of the covering, said tongues having inwardly pressed prongs for penetrating the outer` surface of the covering to hold the collar in position, and a compression band adapted for positioning about the covering over said tongues to hold the prongs in the covering and bind the latter in position, said tongues having lugs thereon adapted to be overturned upon the band for interconnecting the band and collar.
4. An end clamp for pipe coverings -and the like comprising a split collar for application to the end of the pipe covering or the like and having at its outer marginal edge a plurality of pronged tongues disposed at substantially right angles to the plane of the collar for engagement against the exterior surface of, the covering, said tongues having spaced apart lugs adapted to be overturned, and a band adapted to be placed about the covering and over said tongues to force the prongs thereof into the covering, said band adapted for engagement beneath said lugs to interlock the band to the collar.
5. An end clamp for pipe coverings and the like, comprising a pair of hinged connected semicircular sections adapted to be placed against the end of a covering about a pipe or the like and having at its outer marginal edge a plurality of tongues disposed at substantially right angles to the plane of the collar, each of said tongues having an inwardly pressed prong and a pair of spaced apart lugs, and a band adapted to encircle the covering about said tongues and having a flat loop on one end for receiving the free end of the band for drawing the band taut against the tongues to bind the prongs into the outer surface of the covering and to dispose the band beneath said lugs, the free extremity of said band adapted to be folded back beneath the adjacent lugs of the collar for holding the band in tight position.
6. An end clamp for pipe coverings and the like, comprising a split collar adapted for ap-` plication against the end of a covering and about a pipe therein, said collar having at its outer marginal edge portion spaced tongues disposed at substantially right angles to the plane of the collar and adapted to extend over a portion of the outer face of the covering, said collar also having an outer marginal flange adapted to overlap the adjacent end portion of the covering, said tongues having inner overturned outwardly offset lugs at the bases of the tongues inwardly of the free edge of said flange and having bendable lugs at the free ends of the tongues, and a compression band of a width adapted to lie between the lugs of the tongues and adapted at its inner edge to overlap said flange and iit beneath the inner lugs, said band having a iiat loop on one end for receiving the opposite end of the band therethrough and said opposite end of the band adapted to be drawn taut to compress the band and overturned against the outer side of the band beneath an adjacent lug, said lugs on the outer ends of the tongues adapted to be overturned about the opposite edge of the band to interlock the band to the collar and hold the free end of the band in position.
