Description

25, 1938. A. w. GROSSHANS ET AL p p FASTENER Filed Dec. 11, 1954 Ari Vfifmm INVENTORS WITNESS: ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 25, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FASTENER Application December 11, 1934, Serial No. 756,997
1 Claim.
The invention relates to a fastener and more especially to a separable fastening device for garments.
' The primary object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character, wherein the same can be applied to overalls or other 1 garments, or separably attaching parts thereof together, as for example, the bib of the overalls or shoulder straps to the waistband of the garment, the fastening being had with dispatch and affording a sure lock in the use of the fastener.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character, wherein the necessity for buttons is eliminated and in the washing of the garment, when using the fastener, destruction of such fastener is avoided.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purposes, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction,
combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illiistrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a fastener constructed in accordance with the invention and in locked position.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, showing the shoulder strap in edge elevation, with the fastener in position for the release of the strap.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3, showing one part of the fastener shifted for the release of said part.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a portion of the waistband of a garment and B a portion of a shoulder strap, these being associated with a. fastener constructed in accordance with the invention and hereinafter fully described.
The fastener comprises a female member including the inner and outer strap-like plates 5 and. 6, respectively, these being made from metal, although the same may be made from other material having the required strength and dura- 6 bility. The outer plate 6 has an outstruck intermediate portion 1 to effect an elongated eye 8 between the plates 5 and 6. This outstruck portion 1 and likewise that portion of the plate 5 opposite said outstruck portion, at their lower 10 edges, are cut to provide the upwardly arched notched area 9. These plates 5 and 6 are superimposed upon each other and are secured to the garment A by transverse rivets II] which permanently fasten the female member thereto at 15 the outer side of the said garment.
The male member of the fastener comprises a loop H through which is trained the shoulder strap B and loosely fastened thereto in any suitable manner. Extending from the eye H, 20 midway thereof, is a shank I2 having a crosshead terminal I3, it being of a size to be accommodated within the eye 8 of the female member when the said crosshead is in true alignment with the elongated extent of the eye and upon the turning of the crosshead l3 at right angles to the length of the eye 8 the said crosshead will fit within the notched area 9 to be disposed crosswise of the eye 8 of the female member and thus locked, with the male and female mem- 30 bers separably connected with each other.
The crosshead I 3 on the shank I2 is substantially the length of the eye 8 in the female member, but allows the free passage of the said crosshead through the eye for the separable engagement of the male and female members with each other, as before set forth.
What is claimed is:
A fastener for garments comprising a fiat base piece, a centrally arched piece superimposed upon the base piece, means securing the said pieces in superimposed relation to each other upon a garment, the said pieces having notches registering with each other in alignment with the arch of one of said pieces, a shank releasably insertable between the pieces at the arch and a cross head on said shank and engageable in the notches for holding the shank separably fastened between said pieces.
