My invention relates to a cigarette lighter and more particularly to a scratch lighter of the flameless type.

Various types of material are known which can 5 be ignited by a spark and which when so ignited will smoulder and become sufliciently hot to ignite a cigarette without actually breaking into flame. Naturally such material does not, as does a wick, last for a practically indefinite period,

10 but must be renewed as the smouldering action actually burns the fiber and destroys the same. A large body of such material is often used, but this body must be frequently shifted so as to bring a fresh portion into position adjacent the 15 sparking member.

The object of the present invention is to provide a lighter of this type in which a single member serves bothto produce the sparks and to move and adjust the ignitable material whenever 20 necessary.

A further object of the invention is to provide a simple, compact and useful lighter of this type which can be manufactured inexpensively and which is efficient in its operation.

The lighter comprises a body or casing 2 preferably relatively thin and fiat, and divided into p two compartments 4 and 6 by a wall 8. This body may be cast in one piece of some plastic material such as artificial resin. In the larger chamber 6 is arranged a mass Ill of a combustible material of any well known type which smoulders without actually breaking into flame. The term smouldering material as used in this specification and claims is intended to define such a composition, which may for example be cotton or other fibrous substance suitably impregnated to give the desired result. The upper top of the casing 2 is open, but may be closed by a cover [2, which is provided around at least a portion of its periphery with a flange 14 which fits inside the open upper end of the casing 2. The cover is provided with a handle l6 which may be in the form of an ornament if 5 desired. This cover will close the casing and when in position will serve to extinguish the smouldering material by excluding air therefrom.

The smouldering material is ignited by sparks produced by the action of a steel member on a flint strip. The steel may for example constitute a striking element i8 embedded in the top of the wall 8 and extending somewhat above the upper edge of casing 2 into a recess 20 in the cover I 2. This member preferably is provided with a sharp edge at its top as is usual in strikers. The flint strip 22 is carried by a stem or rod 24 extending downwardly from the cover l2 and, when the cover is in position, extending into the recess or chamber 4. The lower end of the flint strip and stem are preferably pointed as at 26. As will be noted, the cover is generally flat, and the stem 24 extends at right angles thereto.

In using the lighter, the cover is removed by the handle l6 and moved to the position shown in 25 Fig. 2. The flint strip is then drawn rapidly over the steel striker member [8, producing sparks which will ignite the material l0. When this is ignited a cigarette may be placed against it and will be lit.

If the upper portion of the smouldering material is burned away during use, it is necessary to bring fresh material to the top. The stem 24 may very conveniently be used for this purpose, and, as it is pointed, it is particularly advantageous in rearranging or shifting the position of the smouldering material within its chamber.

When the cigarette has been lit, the cover is replaced and will immediately extinguish the smouldering material.

While I have described herein one embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not intend to limit myself thereby except within the scope of the appended claims.

I claim: 46

1. A lighter comprising a casing open at its top, smouldering material within said casing accessible for contact by a cigarette through the open top thereof, a striking member carried by said casing adjacent said smouldering material, 50 a cover for closing the open top of said casing and extinguishing said smouldering material, and a fiint strip holder extending downwardly from said cover and at an angle thereto, said strip holder being adapted to penetrate into the maing accessible for contact by a cigarette through the open top thereof, a striking member carfried by said casing adjacent said smouldering material and extending above the upper edge of the casing, a cover for closing the open top of said casing and extinguishing the smouldering material, said cover having a recess therein to receive said striking member, and a flint strip holder carried by said cover and extending downwardly below said cover, said flint strip holder cooperating with said striking element to produce sparks and finther being adapted to penetrate into the material through the open top of the casing for the rearrangement of said smouldering material.
