1 Claim.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in display device and more particularly to a cardholder adapted tobe connected to a dispenser such as is used for dispensing paper cups or similar containers from a stack.
The principal object of the invention resides in the provision of a display device or cardholder adapted to be connected to a dispenser in position to beV readily observed by a person from in 10 front of acounter or the like and so as not to interfere with replenishing the stack of the cups or containers.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described including a frame in which may be received a cardcontalning the desired advertising matter or a menu when the device is used at lunch counters or similar places.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and arrangementof parts, described in the following specication, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of the invention, as they now appear to me, it will be understood that such ,changes may be made as will fall within the scope of the appended claim. v
In the drawingsz- Fig. 1 is a front elevation showing my improved form of display device connected in position on a dispenser.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Fig. 3 is a fragmental detail showing a front elevation of the display device removed from the dispenser.
Fig. 4 is a fragmental detail showing a vertical section through the display device while ,at- .10 tached to a dispenser.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line 5--5 of Fig. 3 looking in the direction of the arrows.
. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a slightly modified form of display device.
Fig. 'l is a fragmental detail of the modified construction shown in Fig. 6 with the dispenser shown in dotted lines.
Fig. 8 is a fragmental side elevation of the modified form of the invention disclosed in Figs. 6 and 7.
Fig. 9 is a fragmental side elevation of a still further modified form of the invention positioned upon a dispenser; and
Fig. l0 is a fragmental detail showing a front elevation of the form of device illustrated in Fig. 9.
In the drawings I indicates the top portion of a counter or the like having a projecting ledge portion indicated at 2 and`to which the dispenser is adapted to be secured. In Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings I have shown the dispenser as including what might be termed a base portion 3 having an opening therethrough and provided with means yfor supporting a stackof paper cups or similar containers with the terminal cup or container depending from the bottom as shown at 4 in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Supported on the upper edge of the base 3 is a dome or housing 5, preferably of glass, which encloses the stack of cups or containers it being understood that this dome is readily removable from the base for replenishing the stack but when positioned upon the base entirely enclosing the stack to maintain the same in a sanitary condition. Formed integral with the base 3 is an arm 6 the lower end of which is formed as a clamp portion indicated generally at 'I and carrying the screw 8 whereby the dispenser is clamped onto the outwardly directed ledge portion 2 of the counter or other supporting structure.
My improved form of display device includes a frame 9 having the inwardly directed overlying side flanges I0 and the upwardly directed overlying bottom ange I I forming a guide to receive a card I2 having suitable advertising matter thereon such as a menu or the like. The frame is open at its top edge so that the card I2 may be readily slid into position with the side flanges III overlying the side edges of the card and when the f card is in its lowermost position the bottom edge thereof will be engaged beneath the bottom ange I I as shown more particularly in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings. Secured to the back section of the frame 9, by rivets, screws or other suitable fastenings indicated at I3 is a plate I4 having the outwardly curved extension I5 provided with the side flanges I6 extending at an angle relative thereto and .adapted to be positioned on opposite sides of the arm 6 of the base 3. Each of the anges IB, at its lower end, is provided with an enlarged or projecting portion I'I which extends beyond the inner edge of the arm 6, as shown more particularly in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings and through which extends a bolt I 8 carrying the Wing nut I8 by means of which the display device as a unit is secured to the arm 6 of the base portion 3 of the dispenser.
Struck from the plate I4 are the outwardly directed lugs or projections 20 which are adapted to form a support for the bottom edge of the frame 9, as shown quite clearly in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings.
From the above detailed description it will be seen that the display device as a unit may be readily attached to or detached from the arm 6 and that the frame 9, which carries the card I2, will be spaced from the dome or housing 5 to permit grasping of the latter in its removal or replacement operation. At the same time the depending portion I5, of the plate I4, is curved to engage the outer or front edge of the arm 6, as shown more particularly in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings with the flanges I6 engaging over the sides of the arm and the enlarged or projecting portions I1 extending beyond the bottom or inner surface of the arm to receive the bolt I8. As the wing nut I9 is tightened on the bolt I8 it will securely clamp the display device on the arm 6.
In Figs. 6, 7 and 8 of the drawings I have illustratedfa slightly modified form of my invention. In these figures the base of the dispenser is indicated at 2 I, the enclosing dome or housing at 22, and the terminal cup or container at 23. In this form of the invention the base 2| is provided with a plate or surface 24 to which the arm 25 is adapted to be secured, by means of the screws 26 or other suitable fastenings. The arm 25, at its lower end, is formed with a clamp portion indicated generally at 21, which carries the clamping screw 28 by means of which the dispenser is secured to and supported by the extending ledge portion 2 of the counter or other support.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 6 to 8 inclusive the display device includes the frame indicated at 29 having the inwardly directed side flanges 30 and the upwardly directed bottom flange 3|, the frame receiving a card 32 which when slid into the frame has its lower edge positioned behind the flange 3I and its side edges received beneath the side flanges 3E), the upper end of the frame being opened to permit the card to be slid into position. Secured to the rear face of the frame 29, by means of the rivets, bolts or other suitable fastenings 33, is a plate 34 having the offset vertical extension 35 provided adjacent its upper end with the openings 35 and at its lower end with an elongated slot 31. Outwardly directed flanges 38 are formed where the extension 35 is offset from the plate 34 and the upper edges of these flanges 38 provide a support for the frame 29 as quite clearly illustrated in Figs. '7 and 8 of the drawings.
In the form of the invention just described the extension 35 will be positioned between the plate or surface 24 and the upper face of the arm 25, as shown more clearly in Fig. 6 of the drawings, and the upper screws or bolts 26 will pass through the openings 36 while the lower screw or bolt 26 will be received in the slot 31. As illustrated the frame 29, with the card 32, will be spaced from the dome or housing the same as that form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 5 inclusive.
In Figs. 9 and 10 of the drawings I have shown a still further modified form of display device adapted for use in connection with the same form of dispenser disclosed in Figs. 6 and '1 of the drawings and I am therefore using the same reference characters to denote the several parts of the dispenser. The display device disclosed in Figs. 9 and 10 includes the frame 39 having the inwardly directed side flanges 40 and upturned bottom ilange 4I. A card 42 is carried by the frame and, as in the other forms of the invention when in Dosition, has its bottom edge received behind the flange 4I and its side edges positioned behind the anges 40. Secured to the rear face of the frame 39, by means of the rivets, screws or other suitable fastenings 43, is the member 44 having the downwardly curved portion 45 corresponding to the curve of the upper edge portion of the arm 25, as shown more particularly in Fig. 9 of the drawings and forming a shoulder 46 to receive the bottom edge of the frame 39. The member 44 is also formed with the shoulder 41 provided in its under surface with a recess to provide the pointed projection 48 which engages, as shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings, at the point where the face of the arm 25 engages the surface 24. In this form of the invention as in the other forms the frame with the card is supported in spaced relation to the dome or housing which encloses the stack of cups or containers and the member 44 is secured in position by means of the screws 26 or other suitable fastenings.
At the present time paper cups or containers are in extensive use at soda fountains, lunch counters, or the like and are normally supported in a dispenser in stacked formation and from which the terminal cup or container may be d withdrawn for use. The stack of cups or containers is normally enclosed in what may be termed a dome or housing, preferably of glass, and when the stack is to be replenished the dome or housing is removed from a supporting base and then replaced. In carrying out my invention I have provided a novel form of display device which is connected to the dispenser and positioned so as not to interfere in any way with the removal or replacement of the dome or housing. IvIy display device is in the form of a frame, with means for securing the same to the dispenser, the frame carrying a card on which may be printed any desired advertising matter and when the dispensers are used at a soda fountain, or lunch counter, the menu of foods to be served may be printed on the card. While I have illustrated and described a card as being positioned in the frame it will be understood that, if desired, the advertising matter might be placed directly on the frame as distinguished from a removable card. The display device is secured to the dispenser so that it faces the customers in front of the counter or in other words the djspenser is usually positioned towards the attendant at the fountain or counter and the display device will be positioned relative to the dispenser and more particularly the dome or housing thereof, to face the customer. It will be also noted that the display device is of such a form or construction that it may be readily secured to or removed from the dispenser.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
The combination with a dispensing device including a support for a stack of articles to be dispensed, a removably mounted dome adapted to confine the stack, and means including an arm for attaching the support to an object, of a display device including a frame portion and a member adapted to be engaged with the arm, said member having flange portions adapted to engage the sides of the arm and means passing through the flange portions for detachably connecting the member to the arm, the frame portion extending parallel with the dome but spaced therefrom: to permit grasping of the dome in its removal or replacement operation.
