SAFETY JAR HOLDER Filed April 50, 1955 2 Sheets-Sheet 2- *mw- WIIIIIJ! mIIIIIIm Inventor E. C'anfz'n a Q By Allomey Patented Feb. 11, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a jar holder for holding a jar stationary while the cap of the jar is being placed on the same or removed, the general object of the invention being to provide a base having clamps for attaching it to a table or the like, an upright attached to the base and clamping jaws adjustably supported from the upright for clamping the jar and a pair of pivoted jaws for removing the cap or placing it on the jar as the jar is held by the holding means.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is a side view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the jar holding jaws with parts broken away.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
In these drawings the numeral I indicates the base plate which is provided with the clamping screws 2 having the wing nuts 3 threaded thereon so that the plate can be clamped to a table or the like as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3. A rubber mat 4 is suitably connected to the top of the plate for forming a seat for the jar and an arcuateshaped strip 5 is held edgewise on the mat by the fastening means passing through the ears 6 connected with the ends of the arcuate-shaped member. This member acts as a guide in positioning the jar on the base plate. A post 1 has a foot 8 at its lower end which is fastened to the base plate as shown more particularly in Figure 5 and a collar 9 is held in adjusted position on the post by a thumb nut Ill. The jaw clamping means comprises a pair of jaw members ll pivotally connected together as shown at I! with one jaw member having a perforated ear l3 projecting therefrom, the perforated part being enlarged as shown at l3 in Figure 2. This part is adapted to fit over the post and rest upon the collar 9 so that by adjusting the collar 9 the jaws can be spaced any desired distance from the base plate to engage the neck of jars of different heights. After the parts are suitably adjusted for the jar to be clamped the jaws are opened to permit the jar to be placed in position and then by pressing the handles ll of the jaws toward each other said jaws will clamp the jar as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The jaw parts are of channel-shape in cross section as shown in Figure 4 and strips M of rubber or the like are placed in portions of these channels to engage the jar. A similar pair of jaws I5 is provided for gripping the cap of the jar for tightening the same on the jar or removing the cap from the jar. These jaws l5 are provided with handle i5 and pivotally connected together as shown Thus it will be seen that I have provided a simple means for firmly holding a jar when the cap is being removed or put in place, one hand of the user engaging the jar gripping jaws while the other hand can manipulate the cap gripping Jaws.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:-
1. A jaw holding device comprising a base plate having a resilient member thereon, a post rising from the base plate, a collar slidably arranged on the post, means for holding the collar in adjusted position, a pair of arcuate shaped jaws pivotally connected together at one end and handles connected to the other ends, a projection extending outwardly of an intermediate part of one jaw and having a hole therein for receiving a portion of the post, whereby the jaws are rotatably supported by the post, the projection resting on the collar.
2. A jaw holding device comprising a base plate having a resilient member thereon, a post rising from the base plate, a collar slidably arranged on the post, means for holding the collar in adjusted position, a pair of arcuate shaped jaws pivotally connected together at one end and handles connected to the other ends, a projection extending outwardly of an intermediate part of one jaw and having a hole therein for receiving a portion of the post, whereby the jaws are rotatably supported by the post, the projection resting on the collar, and an arcuate member connected with the plate and forming a guide with the lower end of the jar.
