This invention relates to lifting devices or jacks and has for one of its objects the provision of such a device which may be operated for supporting an automobile or other vehicle in raised position, by the vehicle wheels.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character having a ramp upon which a Wheel of the vehicle may ride up to actuate an obstruction which automatically releases a spring pressed plunger to support the said vehicle with one or more of its wheels above the ground.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for resetting the vehicle supporting plunger to normal lowered position to permit the vehicle to ride off therefrom.
Another object is to produce a device of the character described in which the maximum simplicity of construction and operation is secured.
20 Other objects and advantages will appear as the nature of the improvements is better understood, the invention consisting substantially in the novel arrangement and co-relation of parts herein fully described and illustrated in the ac- 25 companying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to describe corresponding parts throughout the several views, and then finally pointed out and specifically defined and indicated in the appended claims. 1
30 The disclosure made the basis of exemplifying the present inventive concept suggests a practical embodiment thereof, but the invention is not to be restricted to the exact details of this disclosure, and the latter, therefore, is to be understood from an illustrative, rather than a restrictive standpoint.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustration, is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view in elevation partly in section of my improved jack;
Figure 2 is a. top plan view thereof;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the lower section of the ramp;
Figure 5 is an end view looking from the left 50 of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a top plan view partly in section of the latching means for maintaining the plunger in upper position;
Figure '7 is a fragmental sectional view of a 55 modified form of the invention, and
Figure 8 is a. sectional view thereof taken on line 88, Figure 7.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, I 0 indicates a base provided with a central longitudinally extending slideway H the rear end of 5 which is closed by a block I2. A carriage shell or casing l3 comprising sections [4 and I5 respectively are suitably secured together and may be provided with balls I6 upon which the said shell may be slid into required position. 10
A vehicle supporting member or plunger I1 is slidably mounted in the shell and is held in its normal lowered position by releasable latch means I8 (Figs. 1 and 5). The said means comprises a finger l9 rotatably or swingably mount- 5 ed in the frame l3 and normally engages a second finger extending from a hub 2| mounted or secured to the forward end of a pin 22 which at its rear end is provided with an extension or pin 23 which extends into an opening 24 at the 20 lower left side edge of the plunger. The two fingers l9 and 28 are normally held in engagement by a spring 25 on the pin 22 and the extension or pin 23 prevents the pin 22 from coming out the casing l3 when the fingers are unlatched 25 and the spring urges the pin 22 forwardly in the direction of the arrow 26 at which time the said extension engages the end wall 21 of a recess 28 in the casing [3.
The forward end of the base I 0 is provided with 30 an opening 30 through which extends a rod 3| which also passes through the lower section 32 of a wedge or ramp 33 having an upper ramp section 34 hingedly connected thereto at 35. The lower ramp section 32 is provided at its upper 35 surface with serrations or grooves 36 for the reception of a rod 3! which is slidingly mounted on a frame 38. The above arrangement provides means for adjusting the ramp 33, as by moving the pin or rod 3'! downwardly on the frame 38 40 so as to engage the lower or front grooves 36 the ramp opens up on its hinges thus raising anything resting thereon.
To remove a tire or wheel from a vehicle the said vehicle is driven forwardly with one of its wheels 48 riding over the ramp 33. As the wheel reaches the dot and dash position shown in Fig.
1 it contacts and depresses a rod 4| loosely mounted in the hub 21 rocking the finger 20 in the direction of the arrow 42 (Fig. 5) and disengaging 50 same from the finger 9 permitting the spring 25 to urge the pin 22 forwardly in the direction of the arrow 26 thus carrying the extension 23 out of engagement with the plunger IT. The said plunger is then urged upwardly by a spring 43 removed and replaced. In vehicles not provided with the portion 4'! or where the said portion is out of lateral alinement'with the plungerll, a
'lever 58 pivotally mounted at 49 on the plunger i? may be moved'into the dot and dash position Fig. 2 or any other position in which a portion of the vehicle may be made to rest thereon.
In order to lock the plunger in upper position, I provide same with teeth 50 which are normally in engagement with a one Way latching member or pawl 5i (Fig. 1) which is pivotally mounted at 52 on a horizontal plunger 53 provided with a spring 5 3 to urge the memberr5l into contact with the teeth 50. The said plunger 53 is provided with an extension 55 having a slot 56 through which the upper end of a lever 51extends; The said lever'is pivotally mounted at 58 and when the lower end thereof is pressed inwardly in the direction of the arrow 59 the member 5! becomes disengaged from and moves out of the path of the teeth 50 permitting the plunger 51 to be depressed. In the lower position the pin 22 is reset by hand and the said plunger is again latched in normal position and the vehicle is driven or rolled off the jack, A stop 60' on the pawl 5i whichnormally engages the enlarged portion of the horizontal plunger 53 permits rotation in upward direction only of the said pawl vfrom the position shown thus insuring freedom of upward movement of the plunger I1 and positive support thereof when in upper position.
. In Figs. 7 and 8 I have shown a modified form of the invention wherein means are provided for raising the plunger H manually. The said means comprises a ratchet member 62 having two toothed end sections 63 in mesh with the teeth 58 of the plunger ll, and a central larger toothed portion 54, the teeth of which are cut in a direction opposite topthe teeth of the end sections and. are engaged by a pawl 55 pivotally mounted on a bifurcated rod 66 pivoted at 6'1 and provided with an end 68 adapted to be engaged by a tool or handle 69 for rocking the rod 65 about its pivot Having described my invention, what I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
