Description

Patented Dec. 31, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a well lid and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which will provide a closure for an open well to prevent entrance of foreign matter thereto and which forms a support for the Water obtaining bucket when not in use, the latter acting to retain the device in well closing position so that when removed for use, the device immediately assumes well uncovering position and is so constructed as to permit free or unobstructed use of the bucket to obtain water from the well in the usual manner.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section, illustrating a well lid constructed in accordance with my invention. Figure 2 is a side elevation illustrating the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the nu- 0 meral I indicates a vertically arranged supporting structure composed of intermediate and side members 2 and 3. The side members parallel one another and are integrally connected at their up per end by an arcuately curved and horizontally 35 arranged head 4 to which the upper end of the intermediate member is secured. The lower ends of said members are secured to a split band or clamp 5 adapted to encircle the upper end of a well casing 6 and be secured thereto by a bolt or like fastener! extending through apertures in the ofise-t ends 8 of the split band or clamp. The band or clamp has formed thereon a hinged barrel 9 engaged by spaced hinge barrels In carried by a lid l l. A hinged pintle or shaft l2 extends through the barrels for hingedly connecting the lid to the clamp. The pintle or shaft l2 has one end offset laterally and secured to the lid and secured to said shaft or pintle adjacent to said opposite end is a crank arm l3 to which is pivoted a link l4 and the latter is in turn pivoted to a lever I5 pivoted to the upper portion of the supporting structure I. One end of the lever I5 is offset to form a hook IS on which may be suspended a well bucket I! when not in use. The weight of the bucket on the lever retains the lid in well closing position and connected to the lever l5 and to the supporting structure is a coil spring l8 acting to move the lid into well opening position on the removal of the bucket from the hook IS. The specific construction of the supporting structure I will permit free vertical movement of the bucket in either direction so that water may be obtained from the well in the usual manner of raising and lowering the bucket. 25
Having described the invention, I claim:
A well lid comprising a vertically arranged supporting structure, means for mounting said structure to a well casing, a lid hinged to said means for opening and closing the well, a lever pivoted to the upper end of the supporting structure and connected to the lid and having one end bent to form a hook to be engaged by a well bucket when not in use for positioning the lid in well closing position, and a spring between the lever and the supporting structure to automatically efiect opening of the well on the removal of the bucket from the hook.
