Abstract
A mobile casework furniture unit has a framework including vertical corner posts with outwardly facing surfaces, wheels or castors attached directly to lower ends of the posts or to a base panel supporting the posts, and a pegboard extending between a first and a second of the posts, with the pegboard recessed inwardly of the outwardly facing surfaces of the first and second posts.
Description
- This disclosure relates to mobile casework, including cabinets, desks, file drawer storage units, workstations, and tables, having wheels, castors or rollers to facilitate mobility; and more particularly to mobile casework having a pegboard to provide visibility and easy access to tools or other items stored on the mobile casework.
- Pegboards have been commonly employed as the backboard for mobile casework furniture and/or have been offset from cabinet doors. Such applications are not particularly well suited for certain types of casework having shelves, drawers, and/or cubical storage units, because shelves, drawers, storage units and items stored thereon would impede access to the pegboard and items supported on the pegboard.
- It has also been known to make a pegboard the side of a mobile casework cabinet. While providing easy access to tools or other items supported on the pegboard, providing a pegboard side panel on a mobile casework unit can interfere with the ability to arrange a plurality of casework units in abutting side-by-side relationship without needing to remove tools and/or other items from the pegboard.
- Disclosed are mobile casework furniture units having a recessed side pegboard that allows items to be supported on the pegboard while the unit can be arranged in side-by-side relation with a second unit. Each mobile casework furniture unit has a framework partially defined by vertical corner post having outwardly facing surfaces and a pegboard that extends between a first and a second of the corner posts, with the pegboard located inwardly of outwardly facing surfaces of the first and second posts.
-
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a first embodiment of the disclosed mobile casework furniture units. -
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of the disclosed mobile casework furniture units. - Mobile casework furniture units refer to generally box-shaped factory-made furniture units such as cabinets, desks, tables, displays, and the like, that can be rolled along a floor surface on castors or wheels.
- Shown in
FIG. 1 is an example of a first embodiment of this disclosure. The illustrated mobile casework furniture unit is a storage unit 10 having a base panel 12 supported on wheels or castors 14. Base panel 12 and other disclosed furniture panels can be fabricated from any suitable furniture material such as metal (e.g., steel), solid wood, plywood, medium-density fiberboard, chip board, melamine-faced chip board, or the like. Base panel 12 has a generally or substantially rectangular shape (including a square shape). A generally or substantially vertical post 16 rises from each of four corners of base panel 12. Each post 16 has outwardly facing surfaces 18, 20 (i.e., facing away from the interior of storage unit 10) and inwardly facing surfaces 22, 24 (i.e., surfaces that do not face away from the interior of storage unit 10). - A pegboard side panel 26 extends between posts 16A and 16B along a width direction of base panel 12 (i.e., along a side or the cabinet having a shorter dimension). Pegboard side panel 26 is recessed inwardly toward the interior storage unit 10 with respect to outwardly facing surfaces 18, 20 of posts 16A and 16B such that a space is defined between an outer surface of pegboard side panel 26 and outwardly facing surfaces 20 of posts 16A and 16B. The defined space allows various items such as tools, pencils/pen holders 28 and document holder 30 to be supported on pegboard side panel 26 while similar or identical cabinet units 10 are arranged in abutting side-by-side relationship.
- A second pegboard side panel (not illustrated) can be provided on a side of storage unit 10 opposite the location of pegboard 26, and can be substantially or generally a mirror image of illustrated pegboard side panel 26, with the second pegboard side panel extending between third and fourth posts 16.
- Storage unit 10 can be provided with a top panel 32 rigidly connected with upper ends of post 16.
- Also storage unit 10 can be provided with a back panel 34 rigidly connected with back posts 16 and/or panel and/or panel 32.
- Storage unit 10 can be provided with shelves 36 and/or drawers 38.
- Shown in
FIG. 2 is an example of a second embodiment of this disclosure. The illustrated mobile casework furniture unit inFIG. 2 is a desk or table 40. Table 40 has four corner posts 42A, 42B, 42C and 42D, which are arranged at corners of a hypothetical rectangle (including squares). Each corner post 42 has an outwardly facing surface 44. A wheel or castor 46 is provided at a lower end of each corner post 42 to allow table 40 to be easily rolled along a floor. - Structure rigidly connected with each of corner posts 42 is provided to define a table frame. Such structure can comprise transverse members 48, 50 connected at each end with an upper end of one of the posts 42, and a cross-member 52 joined at its opposite ends to each of the transverse members 48, 50. Alternatively or additionally (as illustrated), the structure defining a frame can comprise pegboards 54 and 56 each connected to posts 42 at opposite sides of table 40 and a shelf panel 58 connected at its opposite ends to pegboards 54 and 56.
- Table 40 includes a first pegboard side panel 54 extending between first and second corner posts 42A and 42B along a width direction of the hypothetical rectangular shape (i.e., along a side of the table 40). Pegboard 54 is positioned inwardly of outwardly facing surfaces 44 of posts 42A and 42B.
- A second pegboard side panel 56 can be provided on a side of table 40 opposite the location of pegboard 54, and can be generally or substantially a mirror image of pegboard 54.
- Table 40 can further comprise a top panel (e.g., a worksurface panel) supported on the transverse member 48, 50 and/or cross-member 52.
- While the present invention is described herein with reference to illustrated embodiments, it should be understood that the invention is not limited hereto. Those having ordinary skill in the art and access to the teachings herein will recognize additional modifications and embodiments within the scope thereof. Therefore, the present invention is limited only by the claims attached herein.
