BILL FOLD Filed oet. 29, 1932 In Ve mof'.

Patented Dec. 17, 1935 Unirse STATES PATENT QFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates to a foldable case suitable for carrying paper currency and certificate or identification cards of the automobile owner or driver, and may also have additional pockets for carrying memorandum.
My improved bill fold case consists of a compartment for receiving paper currency and having a continuous outer wall, the respective ends of which are provided with inner wall sections each secured to, the end and lower edges of the outer wall, said end sections respectively providing oppositely directed pocket portions opening toward each other and one of said sections having'its pocket made with a window portion and an inner back portion secured to said end section and to the outer wall, said inner back portion having an extension or tongue projecting beyond the pocket section and slidably engaging the pocket of the other end section, whereby when the case is folded upon itself the pocket extension or tongue will adjust itself automatically in the other end section to suit the thickness of the folded case and paper currency within the same.
My invention further comprehends the provision in a bill or carrying case, of gussets arranged between the bottom and end edges of the outer wall and end sections which comprise the oppositely directed pocket portions, so that the bill fold pocket may have expansibility between its outer and inner Walls and adjacent to the bottom and end edges of said outer wall.
My invention also embodies a construction of bill fold case wherein there is provided an elongater outer wall combined with two end sections respectively connected to the bottom and end edges of the outer wall, and wherein further one of said end sections is provided with an extended tongue adapted to rit into and slidably engage the pocket in the other end section.
My invention also embodies a construction such as last defined and wherein further, a gusset is provided between the edges of the outer wall and end sections.
My invention also consists of other improvements hereinafter described whereby the desired objects and results are attained, said improvements comprising certain organization and combination of parts which are fully described and more particularly defined in the claim.
Referring to the drawing: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a bill fold case embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the same before being secured in the position shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse and longitudinal sectional view taken upon line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. fl is a vertical section on line of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. l; and Fig. 6 is an edge View illustrating the preferred construction of tongue 5 shown more particularly in Fig. 2.
2 represents the outer wall of the bill fold and is of general rectangular shape.. 3 and 4 represent two pocketlike end sections facing in opposite directions and having their lower edges 6 10 united to the outer wall 2 along the bottom edge 5 thereof and respectively connected at their vertical ends l with the ends 9 of the outer wall. Preferably, these oppositely directed end sections 3 and 4 have their connection with the outer l5 wall 2 formed by gussets or bellows folds indicated at 8. By employing a gusset or bellows fold along the lower edges of the sections 3 and i and the vertical ends l thereof, the pocket IIJ` adjacent to the outer wall for receiving the paper 20 currency may readily expand throughout its whole area for the reception of a more or less thick package of currency bills. These gussets 8 may be omitted between the tWo end sections 3 and 4, so as to make the bill fold exible at 25 its middle or folding part II.
The end section i is so constructed as to provide a pocket I2 extending from its vertical edge near the middle of the case, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3, and said section may also have 30 additional pocket structures I3 of any suitable or desired form.
The end section 3 differs in construction from the end section 4 in that it is perforated and backed with a celluloid window I4 thereby pro- 35 viding a pocket I5 open o-n the end I6 through which an identicaticn or other card I'I may be inserted back of the window. The inner Wall I8 of the pocket section 3 is extended to form a tab or tongue structure IS which is preferably 40 stiffened by a construction such as shown in Fig.
6, wherein thel part 2Q is formed of vulcanized paper to provide a reasonable stiffness but at the same time retain flexibility. This vulcanized paper is covered on each side with a cloth layer 45 2| glued thereto. In addition to the covering of cloth 2|, there is a further covering of thin leather as indicated at 22 in Fig. 6. The tongue is an integral structure attached to the end section 3 and with the leather portion 22 adjacent 50 to said end section, so as to provide a leather structure which in appearance will be in keeping with the character of the leather nish of the bill fold case and, if desired, may have its iiexibility increased by the omission of the vulcanized paper 55 immediately under the leather portions 22. By stiffening the tab structure I9, it is readily inserted through the open end I2 of the pocket formed in the end structure ll, and moreover the cloth 2l wholly enters the pocket and is shielded thereby.
It will be seen that the Wall 23 of the end section i provides an inner wall to the bill fold recess I0 and the part 22 of the extension or tongue structure I9 closes the gap between the oppositely extending sections 31 and 4, the flexible walls Il and 22 permitting the bending of the case thereat as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable, and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that I do not restrict myself to the details as the same are susceptible of modification in various particulars, without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
I claim:
A bill fold pocket case of the character described, having an elongated compartment for receiving paper currency, comprising a continu# ous outer wall and separated inner wall sections, one of the sections of the inner wall being elongated to form a reinforced but flexible tongue extension having substantially the same area as the inner wall section of which it forms a part, said inner wall section also provided with a window structure cn its main body portion at one end of the bill fold case, and the other section of the inner wall forming a part of a pocket structure at the other end of the bill fold case, the tongue extension being slidably but detachably engaged in frictional contact for substantially its full length and Width in the said pocket structure, whereby when the case is folded upon itself the tongue extension will automatically become adjusted in the pocket according to the thickness of the case and paper currency within the elongated compartment; and wherein also, gussets are provided between the bottom and end edges of the outer wall of the elongated compartment and the bottom and end edges of the section of the inner wall forming the pocket structure and the bottom for a portion only and end edges of the section of the inner wall forming the window structure and tongue extension.
