BAG FRAME Filed Feb. 21,- 1935 Patented Dec. 17, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE BAG FRAME ration of Delaware Application February 21, 1935, Serial No. 7,504
3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in frames for ladies hand bags and the like.
In the manufacture of hand bag frames of the laterally opening channelled type, provided with tabs for securing bag covering material thereto, as shown for example in U. S. Patent 1,913,546, issued to me on June 13, 1933, there is a considerable waste of metal in the forming of the clamping tabs and, inasmuch as the frames are made from blanks with tabs equally spaced it has been found impracticable to make frames of different sizes from the same blank, for the reason that in certain sizes of frames the tabs Will be located at the corners of the frame and at other undesirable points, making it necessary to remove the tab or to use other expedients to compensate therefor.
It is, therefore, an object of my invention to provide a frame for ladies hand bags and the like which has substantially all of the advantages of the laterally opening channelled type of frame, but which obviates the waste of material in the manufacture of frames having clamping tabs.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a frame for ladies hand bags which is of uniform structure and which can be made in any size without necessitating compensating for tabs located at undesirable places.
In accordance with my invention, the frame comprises substantially a downwardly opening channel in which detachable clips are positioned at desirable points, the clips being used for the purpose of securing bag covering material to the frame.
The above and other advantageous objects, which will later appear, are accomplished by the simple and practical construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and exhibited in the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a frame embodying my invention, showing a clip positioned in the frame and partially bent to hold bag covering material,
Fig. 2 is an exploded perspective view showing in detail the contour of the frame, the structure of the clamping clip, and an inlay, holding bag covering material, used in conjunction with the frame,
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a frame embodying my invention, showing a plurality of clips positioned along the frame at desirable points, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional View taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3, showing a clip completely bent and closed to tightly secure the bag covering material to the frame.
Referring to the drawing, the frame is shown to comprise a downwardly opening channel having a top wall 5, and an outer wall 6 which has its edge bent inwardly at I throughout its length, and an inner wall 8 of greater width than the outer wall 6.
It will-be seen that the frame can be made in any size as the structure is uniform throughout its length, and the manufacture of the frame obviously requires a comparatively simple operation.
In connection with the frame, there is employed a plurality of clips each of which has a wall 9 having an upper edge arcuately bent at I 0, and an outwardly extending flange I I extending from the lower part. thereof, the juncture of the flange and the wall 9 being provided if desired with a plurality of perforations l2 to facilitate bending of the flange. The flange is also preferably provided with an inwardly projecting protuberance I3, for the engaging of bag covering material. The bag covering material is preferably first secured toa metal inlay 15 of the channelled or other type.
In attaching bag covering material to my frame a plurality of the clips are inserted in the channel portion of the frame, the bent-in edge 1 of the wall 6 engaging the arcuate portion Iil of each clip to prevent the latter from falling downward. After the clips have been inserted in the channel the inlay l5 carrying the bag covering material I4 is positioned in the clips, and then the flange ll of each clip is bent upwardly to firmly clamp the inlay and bag covering material in the channel as shown in Fig. 4.
It will be seen that any outward or downward pull on the bag covering material will only serve to hold the clips more tightly in the channel, the removal of the clips being possible only by a rotation upwardly of the clips until the free edge of the arcuate portions I0 clears the inturned edge 1 of the wall 6.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a frame which can be easily manufactured at a relatively low cost as the operations involved in the manufacture thereof are very simple and the frameis of uniform structure throughout its length, having no tabs thereon and there is no Waste of metal. The frame also facilitates the attaching of bag covering material thereto as the clips can be readily inserted in the frame and conveniently bent to clamp the inlays and bag covering material to the frame.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed including many modifications without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a hand bag, a frame comprising a downwardly opening channel having an outer wall with an inturned edge and an inner wall of greater width than the outer wall, a plurality of clips detachably positioned in said channel, each of said clips having an arcuate portion engaging the inturned edge of the outer wall tolimit downward movement of the clip, and an inlay having bag covering material attached thereto, said clips having portions bent upwardly to secure said inlay and bag covering material to the frame.
2. In a hand bag, a frame having a down wardly opening channel having an outer wall with an inturned edge, a plurality of clips detachably positioned in said channel, each of said clips having an arcuate upper portion engaging the inturned edge of the outer wall to prevent
