7 Claims. My invention relates to new and useful imdrawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing in which like numerals designate similar parts thruout the several views:
Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of my coupling. device with the same uncoupled.
Fig. 2 is a view of the same when coupled.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same when the device is uncoupled.
Fig. 4 is a view in cross section on line A-A of Fig. 3, except for the omission of the knockoff portion thereof.
l represents that connected to the pump Jack, and 2 that portion thereof connected to the power. 3 represents a knockoiT plate member which is connected to line l and 4 represents a hookon 0r hookon member in the form of a bail or loop which is roll when said loop is disengaged from said plate.
For slidably supporting loop 4 when it is disengaged from plate 3, and for position for immediate engagement with said plate, I have provided as a preferred form of my invention, a bent lever l8 fulcrumed on a pin H which also serves as the axle of a roller or wheel l2, and with said PATENT OFFICE said loop is reciprocated by the action of the power to which it is connected thru line 2. It is obvious that in place of rollers or wheels as aforesaid, slides or slide blocks may be employed, and that roller l2 or its equivalent slide may 5 be omitted inasmuch as the weight of loop 4 is carried by roller l4 and roller I2 serves as a support for the fulcrum of lever ID, in which event the lever would be free to fulcrum on track 9. Moreover it is evident that the pivotal con- 10 nection of straps l5 might be made to lever l0 thru a. separate pin located thereon between the two wheels aforesaid, and that the gist of my invention resides in providing a slidable notches 8 of plate 3. v r
In plate 3 and towards the end thereof to go which line I is connected, are notches l6, similar to notches 8 and adapted to receive knockoff bar 6 as shown in Fig. 1. In practice no distinction is made between notches 8 and I6 and all may be spaced alike in one series. The spacing is preferably such that when in use the loop 4 may be thrown into any one of several notches within its reach, and the knockofi bar 6 may be slipped into any of the notches which the movement of plate 3 may permit. In use, when the well is hooked on, that is when the rodline is connected as shown in Fig. bar 6 is disengaged from plate it is desired to knock the disconnect the rodline, the operator pulls handle 7 upwardly to engage bar 6 in a selected notch I 6 as the rodline moves towards the pump jack, whereupon the movement of line I is checked, but as the power continues to move line 2 it shoves loop 4 out of notch 8 in which it rests and the weight of the loop causes it to drop downwardly until roller l4 engages track 9, whereupon loop 4 hangs suspended from plate 3 and lever I0 is in the position shown in Fig. 1, in which position the lever and loop ride on plate 3 as the power causes loop 4 to continue to be reciprocated.
With the well knocked 01f and the power in operation, when it is desired to hook the well on, the operator presses down on lever H3 at its free end and thus causes loop 4 to come into engagement with any desired notch 8 which it may pass during its travel, whereupon with the movement of the loop in a direction towards the power the knockoff bar 6 becomes disengaged means and adapted from notch lfi wherein it has been held and the bar drops free from plate 3.
When it is desired to pick up the well, that is to raise the jack to its working position as for example when the jack has been dropped by reason of the rodlineparting or the jack has been let down to service the well, the jack may be picked up or pulled into its working position by manipulating lever In which controls the hook on and handle I which controls the knockoff, in which operation plate 3 is first run back to wards the jack far enough to connect the rodline, then lever I0 is thrown to in the notch which is iarthest within its reach, then as plate 3 is pulled towards the power one or more of the notches l6 come up to or pass the knockoff bar 6 and as the last notch passing the bar commences to move in reverse direction bar 6 is slipped into it, whereuponloop 4 becomes disconnected from plate 3 and is then free to engage another notch closer to the one then holding bar 6 and upon so engaging such notch plate 3 is again moved closer'to the power and the knockoff bar 6 may be slipped into another notch closer to the jack than was the notch in which it was first placed. In this manner the rodline between the power and the jack may be adjusted to place the jack in the desired working position. The jack may be let down by reversing the operation.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a coupling device for connecting and disconnecting a power rod line, a knockoff memher, a hookon member positionedbelow said knockoff member, means on her for securing the hereinafter mentioned lever thereto, a lever as aforesaid connected to said to raise said hookon memher into engagement with said knockofi member, and means on said lever for slidably holding said hookonmember in an immediate 'engageable position with said knockoff member 7 when said device is uncoupled.
2. In a coupling device for connecting and disconnecting apower rodline as claimed in claim 1, and a wheel on said lever adapted to travel on said knockoff member and to support engage loop 4 e on member when said hookon mem-' said hookon member when the device is uncoupled.
3. In a coupling device for connecting and disconnecting a power rodline as claimed in claim 1, a wheel on said lever adapted to travel on said knockoff member and to support said hookon member when the device is uncoupled, and a second wheel on said lever adapted to travel on said knockofi member and to serve as the fulcrum of said lever.

In a coupling device for connecting and disconnecting a power rodline, a plate knockoff member having a plurality of notches in its under edge and having a comparatively straight upper edge constituting a track, a hookon member having thereon means adapted to engage a selected notch of said plurality of notches in said knockoif member, means on said hookon member slidably engaging said track for suspending said hookon member in spaced position with said knockofi member when said device is uncoupled and a lever pivotally connected to said means for raising said hookon member into engagement with said selected notch.
5. In a coupling device. for connecting and disconnecting a power rodline as claimed in claim 4, and with one of the last aforementioned means being a wheel on said lever adapted to travel on said knockoff member and to support said hookthe device is uncoupled.
6. In a coupling device for connecting a power rodline as claimed in claim 4, and a wheel on said lever adapted to travel on said knockoff member and to serve as the fulcrum of said lever.
'7. In a coupling device for connecting and disconnecting a power rodline, an elongated plate knockoff member having a track along the upper 1 edge and a series of notches along its lower edge,
a hookon member adapted to engage any selected notch aforesaid in said knockoff member, and a rest support on said hookon member adapted to slidably rest on said track and support said hookon member in an immediate engageable position with said knockofi member when said device isuncoupled, and with a roller on said rest support adapted to travel on said track and to support said hookon member as aforesaid.
