The invention vrelates to printers plate hooks, and more particularly consists of a plate registering .quad hook.
Heretofore, plate hooks have been proposedbut these were attendant with devices of a .rather complicated kind, were required to be applied to diagonally disposed grooves of dovetail and other constructions, 4and the clamping members were of such width that the spacing margin between the .plate and type wasentirely too wide for a vast majority of standard printing jobs. Also, such plate-registering members vdid -not permit of a true register as the clamped plates were not `movable in true parallelism with the `edges of the plates to be registered.
This invention .overcomes these :objections and provides means whereby the plate Vmay be brought as close to the type as possible, in which the .quad holds the hook, the hook holds the plate, .and the hook registers the plate, forming thereby a plate registering quad hook. In its embodiment, it contains swivel means to enable the clamping hook to adjust itself -to the plate, and is also a vclose .spacing quad hook. It may also be denedas a quad with means for the engaging plate, or `a quad with -adjustable means for engaging the plate.
The invention will be more fully .described hereinafter and embodiments shown in the drawings, and the invention will be .finally set forth in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Figures 1 to '7, the well-known chase 2U is provided with qucins 2| which hold furniture 2l and printing type 23. Within the space 15 bounded by the inner portions of the printing type, `quads 28 are arranged and to certain of these quads, printers plate registering hooks are attached, these being indicated by 30 having an opening 3| for the insertion of a key 48 having 20 a stem 44 with handle i9 as shown in Figure 7. 'I'hese plate hooks engage the exterior contour of an electrotype or half tone plate 25 and hold the same in position in respect to the type. Inaddition to the furniture 2l, suitable spacing blocks g5 2S may be inserted in a manner well known in the printers art.
There has been considerable diiiiculty in the registration .of plates in respect to the type in proximity thereto, and the improved plate hook 30 more particularly to be described overcomes these objections.
The invention provides a plurality of quads 28 as shown in Figure 2, these quads being generally blocks of lead or .the like suitably spaced adja- 35 cent to each other so that the entire plurality of blocks takes up the necessary space within the printers chase. Certain of these quads are provided with openings and Within these openings printers plate hooks are adjustable so as to ad- 40 just themselves to the alignment of the exterior contour of the plate to be registered. Referring more particularly to Figures 3 to 6, the special quads suitably distributed among the other squads forming the background of the plate is shown in 45 the perspective View of Figure 5, in which two parallel side walls 35 are each provided with horizontal grooves 36 and with an inclined bottom 3l'. The plate hook itself consists of a cylindrical portion 38 as shown in Figure 6, having integral 50 therewith a cross bar 32 with an inclined side 34. At the lower part of the cylindrical portion 38, extending flanges 41 are provided which extend beyond the cylindrical portion. 38, while at right angles thereto, flat portions 46 at either side of 55 the member 38 are arranged flush with the contour of the member 38. Within the member 38, interior screw-threads 46 are provided and within these screw-threads, a screw-threaded member 39 may be moved in and out of the cylindrical portion 33. The screw-threaded member 39 has an angular recess 43 engageable by the registering angular stem 4:3 of the key 48. The lowermost portion of the screw-threaded member 39 is circular or curved which provides a satisfactory riding surface upon the inclined bottom 31 of the quad. The member 3S, as also its cross bar 32, is provided with a central bore 42, having an opening 3l, and this permits the passage of the adjusting key so as to engage with the screwthreaded portion 39. The lianges 41 are adapted to seat within the recesses 36 of the quad. When these flanges l1 seat in these recesses 36, the hook may be moved to and iro within the quad by applying suitable rotary pressure to the screwthreaded portion 33 and riding the same up or down the inclined surface 36. It will be clear that'I a certain amount of angular adjustment is possible by shifting the cross bar 32 which has its two oppositely disposed angular surfaces 33 and 34 in an angular direction, as shown in vdotted lines in Figure 3, the degree of angular adjustment being determined by the retention of engagement between the flange 41 and the recesses 36 of the quad. When, however, the cross bar 32 is moved so as to be in line with the opening between the two side walls 35, whereby 4the anges 41 disengage from the recesses, and the parallel surfaces 4S are flush with the in terior walls of the parts 35, then the hook may be freely taken out of the quad. It may also be removed from the quad by moving the members 38 in a direction parallel with the sides 35 until the flanges 41 ride out of the recesses, but a more convenient form of removal is by turning the hook so as to remove any engagement between the anges 41 and the recesses. When the adjusting key shown in Figure '1 is applied to the opening 3| of Figure' and the screw-threaded member 39 is moved, the upper surface 45 of the anges 41 engage against the upper wall of the recesses 36 and a locking action fixing the hook in position to the plate is then provided. It will be seenby the use of this improved quad, a cross bar may be held in its proper position of registration in respect to the surrounding type by adjusting the hook into proper angular position and holding it thereby to the base by the application of the locking force through the instrumentality of the adjusting key.
It will also be noted that the cross bar 32 has two angular walls 33 and 34. The reason for these walls is that the cross bar may be turned around degrees and by this the cross bar is nearer or further away from one side of the quad. Depending upon the relation of the exterior contour of the plate to the adjacent type, either of these two positions is selected, depending upon the special circumstances applicable.
The embodiment shown in Figs. 8 to 10 provides an angularly adjustable narrow hook. Here the cross bar 63 is provided with angular surfaces, and this cross bar has an opening 64 to enable the key to be inserted therein, this opening being made especially small and the key correspondingly small in diameter. By this very narrow construction of the cross bar 63 an angular adjustment is permitted in the manner as heretofore described in connection with Figure 3, and the advantages of an adjustable hook are provided.
If the cross bar be made still narrower, then such an embodiment would not have the advantage of the 180 degrees transposition of the cross bar 32 of Figure 3.
This embodiment of the invention is further 5 shown in Figures 11 to 13, in which the quad 6| of rectangular shape is provided with a central bore 62. 'Ihis bore, while shown centrally, is axially disposed. Within this bore 62 a supplementary quad or quad shank member is inserted. 10 This member consists of two parallel Walls 66, having lateral recesses 61 and an inclined bottom 68. This supplementary quad shank 65 is inserted into the bore 62 of the quad 6|. Within the supplementary quad member 65, the adjustable 15 hook 69 is insertable, having the flanges 10 and the screw-threaded portion 1l with the narrow cross bar 63 and the opening 64 for the key 48.
It will be seen from the foregoing, that the improved printers plate registering hook consists 20 particularly of a plate registering quad hook having the advantage of being readily placed in any portion of the base along the contour of the plate to be registered, and having the further advantage of taking up very little space between the 25 plate and the type, and finally the advantage of being adjustable angularlyso as to adapt itself to any angular position of the plate. I have shown various embodiments of my invention, and changes may be made in the details thereof with- 30 out departing from the spirit of my invention as dened by the appended claims.

A registering hook comprising a quad having a space the bottom of which is inclined to the horizontal, said quad having a substantially 65 horizontal channel on each side of the space above the bottom, a substantially vertically disposed quad shank having the top thereof flush with the top of the quad, opposed flanges secured to the shank and slidable in said channels, 7 0 said shank having a threaded bore therein inclined to the vertical with the angle of the inclination oblique to the plane of the bottom, a quad shank adjusting member disposed in the bore of the shank and provided with a lower end 75 engageable with said bottom, and a hook on the upper end of the shank and disposed at one side of the center thereof whereby the plate engaged by the hook rests on the remaining portion of the top of the shank.

A registering hook comprising a quad having a space the bottom of Which is inclined to the horizontal, said quad having a substantially horizontal channel on each side of the spiace above the bottom, a substantially vertically disposed quad shank, opposed flanges secured to the shank and slidable in said channels, said shank having a threaded bore therein inclined to the vertical With the angle of the inclination oblique to the plane of the bottom, a quad shank adjusting member disposed in the bore of the shank and provided With a lower end engageable With said inclined bottom, and a hook jaw on the upper end of the shank, said opposed flanges being so shaped as to retain engagement With the channels, when said hook jaW is disposed angularly to the channels.
