Abstract
A door opening device comprising a multi-directional head and a telescoping pole is provided. The multi-directional head allows the operator to choose the angle when opening the door and the telescoping pole allows the operator to remain at a distance away from the doorway while operating the doorknob. By allowing an operator to remain around a corner when opening a door, an armed and cornered individual is less able to harm the operator by shooting through the door.
Description
- This application is a Continuation and claims priority of U.S. of America Application No. 17/234,934 filed on Apr. 20, 2021, which claims priority of U.S. of America Application No. 63/013,180 filed on Apr. 21, 2020, each of which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety.
- The present invention relates to a device for opening doors and, more particularly, to a handheld device for remotely opening a door.
- A doorway into a room, home, garage, shed, or structure presents a problem for law enforcement. In fact, such doorways are known as the “fatal funnel” in the tactical response world. Not only do doorways act as choke points when entering a room or building, but law enforcement is particularly vulnerable when approaching a door, because they are unable to see what is waiting on the other side. Law enforcement casualties can be reduced by limiting the time that first responders spend in a doorway.
- The present invention enables first responders to more quickly open a door while remaining outside of the fatal funnel, placing the operator in a tactically advantageous position of their choosing. The present invention provides a door opening device comprising a multi-directional head and a telescoping pole. The multi-directional head allows the operator to choose the angle when opening the door and the telescoping pole allows the operator to remain at a distance away from the doorway while operating the doorknob.
- By allowing an operator to remain around a corner when opening a door, an armed and cornered individual is less able to harm the operator by shooting through the door. For example, dangerous individuals will typically attempt to shoot through a door when the doorknob begins turning. Using the invention, it is possible for the operator to remain outside of the path of any bullets being shot through the door while at the same time opening the door. By manipulating the doorknob and opening the door from a safe distance, less time is spent in the “fatal funnel”, thereby significantly reducing the opportunity that dangerous individuals have to do harm to first responders.
- While a number of features are described herein with respect to embodiments of the invention; features described with respect to a given embodiment also may be employed in connection with other embodiments. The following description and the annexed drawings set forth certain illustrative embodiments of the invention. These embodiments are indicative, however, of but a few of the various ways in which the principles of the invention may be employed. Other objects, advantages, and novel features according to aspects of the invention will become apparent from the following detailed description when considered in conjunction with the drawings.

In the drawings, each element with a reference number is similar to other elements with the same reference number independent of any letter designation following the reference number. In the text, a reference number with a specific letter designation following the reference number refers to the specific element with the number and letter designation and a reference number without a specific letter designation refers to all elements with the same reference number independent of any letter designation following the reference number in the drawings.
- Law enforcement typically avoids dynamically entering a building due to the danger presented by the fatal funnel. - According to a general embodiment, a door opening device including a head having a rotatable grabber for grasping and rotating a door handle is provided. The head is located at the end of a telescoping pole opposite a handle. The telescoping pole allows a user operating the handle to remain at a distance from the door handle.
- In the embodiment shown in
FIGS. 1 and 2 , adoor opening device 10 including ahandle 12, atelescoping pole 14, ahead 16, agrabber actuator 18, arotation actuator 20, and abattery 22 is shown. Thehead 16 includes agrabber 30 that transitions between anopen state 32 and a closedstate 34. Thegrabber actuator 18 causes the transition of thegrabber 30 between theopen state 32 and the closedstate 34. Similarly, therotation actuator 20 rotates thegrabber 30. Thehandle 12 includes auser interface 24 having agrabber element 40 and arotation element 42. Activation of thegrabber element 40 results in transitioning of thegrabber 30 between theopen state 32 and the closedstate 34. Similarly, activation of therotation element 42 results in rotation of thegrabber 30. - The
handle 12 is mechanically coupled to afirst end 24 of thetelescoping pole 14. Thehead 16 is also mechanically coupled to asecond end 26 of thetelescoping pole 14 opposite thefirst end 24. Thehead 16 may include at least one of thegrabber actuator 18 or therotation actuator 20. For example, inFIG. 3 , thehead 16 includes both thegrabber actuator 18 and therotation actuator 20. The 18, 20 may comprise electrical or s actuators. For example, theactuators 18, 20 may be any suitable electrical motor such as a servo motor.actuators - The
battery 22 is operatively coupled to theuser interface 40, thegrabber actuator 18, and therotation actuator 20. Thebattery 22 stores electrical power and supplies the electrical power to thegrabber actuator 18 and therotation actuator 20. In the embodiment shown inFIG. 4 , thebattery 22 is located in thehandle 12. In one embodiment, thehead 16 and thehandle 12 may be electrically coupled, and thegrabber actuator 18 and therotation actuator 20 may be electrical actuators. For example, in the embodiment shown inFIG. 7 , thebattery 22 is located in thehandle 12 and thebattery 22 is electrically connected to thegripper actuator 18 and therotation actuator 20 via anelectrical cord 60 traveling between thehandle 12 and thehead 16 in an interior 62 of thetelescoping pole 14. Thebattery 22 may be any suitable electrical storage device. - As shown in
FIGS. 3 and 5 , thegripper 16 is rotatable. The rotation of thegripper 16 may be controlled via therotation actuator 20. In the embodiment shown inFIG. 3 , therotation actuator 20 is a servo motor that turns a gear attached to therotation actuator 20. This gear in turn rotates a gear that rotates thegripper 30. - In the embodiment shown in
FIG. 4 , thegripper element 40 is a button (e.g., a toggle switch) and therotation element 42 is another button (e.g., a toggle switch) separate from the button of thegripper element 40. As shown, theuser interface 24 may be located in thehandle 12. - As shown in the embodiment depicted in
FIG. 6 , thetelescoping pole 14 is extendable. For example, thetelescoping pole 14 may include a number of pole sections that are extendable and lockable to vary a length of thetelescoping pole 14. By altering the length of thetelescoping pole 14, door handles located at various distances from thehandle 12 can be operated. Thetelescoping pole 14 may be extendable such that a length of thedoor opening device 10 is adjustable between three feet or four feet to ten feet or fourteen feet. - In the embodiment shown in
FIG. 7 , thetelescoping pole 14 includes anelbow 50 at thesecond end 26 and thegrabber 30 is mechanically coupled to theelbow 50. Theelbow 50 may be adjustable to reposition thegrabber 30 off of acentral axis 54 of thetelescoping pole 14. Theelbow 50 may include a set screw for maintaining a position of thehead 16 relative to thecentral axis 54. Alternatively, thedoor opening device 10 may additionally include an elbow actuator configured to modulate a position of thegrabber 30 off of thecentral axis 54. In this embodiment, theuser interface 24 may additionally include anelbow element 56 and activation of theelbow element 56 controls modulation of the position of thegrabber 30 off of thecentral axis 54 by theelbow actuator 52. - In the embodiments shown in
FIGS. 8-10 , movement of thegripper 30 between the open 32 and closed 34 position is shown. As described above, the opening and closing of thegripper 30 is controlled by thegripper actuator 18. Thegripper actuator 18 may be a servo motor that moves asleeve 70 towards or away from thegripper 16. Thefingers 74 of thegripper 30 may be attached to fixed hinge points 72 and thesleeve 70, such that movement of thesleeve 70 opens and closes thegripper 30. - The
head 16 may include amount 78 for physically attaching accessories to the head. For example, the mount 76 may be a picatinny rail. The accessories may include a light, camera, etc. - In the embodiment depicted in
FIGS. 11-15 , thedoor opening device 10 is manually operated without motors and/or batteries. In this embodiment, thehandle 12 includes alever 80. Thehandle 12 and thehead 16 are coupled, such that actuating thelever 80 of thehandle 12 results in actuation of thegrabber 30 between the open 32 and the closed 34 state. Also, rotating thehandle 12 results in a rotation of thegrabber 30. - As shown in
FIGS. 11 and 12 , the elbow may include multiply linked segments that are movable to reposition thegrabber 30 off of thecentral axis 54 of the pole. - In the embodiment shown in
FIG. 12 , using thedevice 10 to grasp a door handle is shown. The operator has positioned thedevice 10 and has grasped the door handle with thehead 16 by closing the graspinglever 80. - In the embodiment shown in
FIG. 13 , rotating thehandle 12 results in a corresponding rotation of thehead 16. For example, thehandle 12 and thehead 16 may be mechanically coupled by acable 82, such that a rotation of thehandle 12 results in a corresponding rotation of thehead 16. In the embodiment shown inFIG. 7 , theelbow 50 includes acable 82 that conveys torque from thehandle 12 to thehead 16. Thecable 82 may be located within an interior of thetelescoping pole 14 andelbow 50, and thecable 82 may bend with theelbow 50. - Also, closing of the
lever 82 may result in a tensioning of thecable 82 that causes a closing of thegrabber 30. For example, thehandle 12 may include areel 84 configured to maintain tension in thecable 82. That is, thecable reel 84 may maintain a tension in thecable 82 between thehandle 12 and thehead 16. By keeping tension on thecable 82, when an operator rotates thehandle 12, thehead 16 may go through a similar rotation. - Turning to
FIG. 15 , an embodiment of thetelescoping pole 14 is shown. In the depicted embodiment, thetelescoping pole 14 includes anouter sleeve 90a, anintermediary sleeve 90b, and aninner sleeve 90c. The sleeves 90 are prevented from rotating relative to one another usingchannels 92 in the sleeves 90. That is, thechannels 92 of anouter sleeve 90a interact withchannels 92 of an adjacentinner sleeve 90b so that an orientation of the sleeves 90 relative to one another is maintained. Maintaining an orientation of the sleeves 90 relative to one another is used to enable the head to rotate without thetelescoping tube 14 rotating. - While the device is described above with respect to opening a door, the device may also be used to deliver objects. For example, the device may be used to deliver a smoke/can canisters.
- The
telescoping pole 14, handle 12, andhead 16 may be made from any suitable material, such as aluminum and/or carbon fiber. - All ranges and ratio limits disclosed in the specification and claims may be combined in any manner. - Although the invention has been shown and described with respect to a certain embodiment or embodiments, equivalent alterations and modifications will occur to others skilled in the art upon the reading and understanding of this specification and the annexed drawings. In particular regard to the various functions performed by the above described elements (components, assemblies, devices, compositions, etc.), the terms (including a reference to a “means”) used to describe such elements are intended to correspond, unless otherwise indicated, to any element which performs the specified function of the described element (i.e., that is functionally equivalent), even though not structurally equivalent to the disclosed structure which performs the function in the herein illustrated exemplary embodiment or embodiments of the invention. In addition, while a particular feature of the invention may have been described above with respect to only one or more of several illustrated embodiments, such feature may be combined with one or more other features of the other embodiments, as may be desired and advantageous for any given or particular application.
Claims (20)
1. A door opening device comprising:
a handle including a user interface having a grabber element and a rotation element;
a telescoping pole, wherein the handle is mechanically coupled to a first end of the telescoping pole;
a head including a grabber configured to transition between an open state and a closed state, wherein the head is mechanically coupled to a second end of the telescoping pole opposite the first end;
a grabber actuator configured to cause the transition of the grabber between the open state and the closed state;
a rotation actuator configured to rotate the grabber; and
a battery operatively coupled to the user interface, the grabber actuator, and the rotation actuator, wherein the battery is configured to store electrical power and to supply the stored electrical power to the grabber actuator and the rotation actuator;
wherein activation of the grabber element results in transitioning of the grabber between the open state and the closed state; and
wherein activation of the rotation element results in rotation of the grabber.
2. The device of claim 1 , wherein:
the telescoping pole includes an elbow at the second end and the grabber is mechanically coupled to the elbow; and
the elbow is adjustable to reposition the grabber off of a central axis of the telescoping pole.
3. The device of claim 2 , further comprising an elbow actuator configured to modulate a position of the grabber off of the central axis.
4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the user interface additionally includes an elbow element and activation of the elbow controls modulation of the position of the grabber off of the central axis by the elbow actuator.
5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the head includes at least one of the grabber actuator or the rotation actuator.
6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the head and the handle are electrically coupled, and the grabber actuator and the rotation actuator are electrical actuators.
7. The device of claim 1 , wherein:
the telescoping pole includes multiple sleeves having intersecting features; and
the intersecting features of adjacent sleeves are configured to interact such that an orientation of the adjacent sleeves is maintained.
8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the battery is located in the handle and the battery is electrically connected to the gripper actuator and the rotation actuator via an electrical cord traveling between the handle and the head in an interior of the telescoping pole.
9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the gripper element is a button and the rotation element is another button separate from the button of the gripper element.
10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the head includes a mount for physically attaching accessories to the head.
11. The device of claim 10 , wherein the mount is a picatinny rail.
12. A door opening device comprising:
a handle including a lever;
a telescoping pole, wherein the handle is mechanically coupled to a first end of the telescoping pole; and
a head including a grabber configured to transition between an open state and a closed state;
wherein the head is mechanically coupled to a second end of the telescoping pole opposite the first end; and
wherein the handle and the head are coupled, such that:
actuating the lever of the handle results in actuation of the grabber between the open and the closed state; and
rotating the handle results in a rotation of the grabber.
13. The device of claim 12 , wherein:
the telescoping pole includes an elbow at the second end and the grabber is mechanically coupled to the elbow; and
the elbow is adjustable to reposition the grabber off of a central axis of the pole.
14. The device of claim 12 , wherein the handle and the head are mechanically coupled by a cable, such that a rotation of the handle results in a corresponding rotation of the head.
15. The device of claim 14 , wherein a closing of the lever results in a tensioning of the cable that causes a closing of the grabber.
16. The device of claim 14 , wherein the handle includes a reel configured to maintain tension in the cable.
17. The device of claim 12 , wherein the head includes an actuator configured to cause the grabber to transition between the closed and the opened state.
18. The device of claim 17 , wherein:
the head and the handle are electrically coupled and the actuator comprises an electrical actuator; or
the head and the handle are pneumatically coupled and the actuator comprises a pneumatic actuator.
19. The device of claim 12 , wherein:
the telescoping pole includes multiple sleeves having intersecting features; and
the intersecting features of adjacent sleeves are configured to interact such that an orientation of the adjacent sleeves is maintained.
20. The device of claim 12 , wherein the head includes a mount for physically attaching accessories to the head.
