' 2 Claims.
In bed and cylinder presses where the sheets arefed directly to the impression cylinder it is impossible to feed the sheets to the bottom of the impression cylinder because of the interference of the form bed and its adjacent parts. It is therefore common to feed the sheets to the top of the impression cylinder from the delivery side of the press but this arrangement has been unsatisfactory, both because of the non-useful extra movement of the bed and cylinder and also because of the proximity of the feeder to the delivery.
The object of my invention is to eliminate these disadvantages by locating the feeder at one side of the impression cylinder and the delivery at the other side thereof, and providing the reciprocating form bed with sheet grasping means arranged in the forward movement of the bed to take a sheet from the feeder and transfer the sheet to the bottom of the impression cylinder, said impression cylinder being arranged to transfer the sheet to the delivery.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 represents in top plan so much of a bed and cylinder printing press as will give a clear understanding of my invention, the parts being shown in the positions they assume as the tumbler actuated bed grippers are transferring the leading end of the sheet to the impression cylinder grippers when at the bottom of the impression cylinder;
Fig. 2 represents a side view of the same;
Fig. 3 represents a detail side view with the parts in the positions they assume as the bed grippers are about to take a sheet from the feeder;
Fig. 4 represents a diagrammatic view showing the positions of the parts just as the bed grippers take the sheet from the feeder;
Fig. 5 represents a similar view showing the positions of the parts just as the impression cylinder grippers take the sheet from the bed grippers; and
Fig. 6 represents a similar view showing the positions of the parts just as the grippers of the rotary delivery carrier take the sheet from the impression cylinder grippers.
The oscillating impression cylinder is denoted by I and its set of grippers by 2. The reciproeating bed is denoted by 3 and its form by '4. The impression cylinder and the reciprocating form bed may be geared together as is usual by the gears 5, 5 and their racks 6, 6.
The sheet feeder which is denoted by I is located at one side of the impression cylinder I and the delivery is located at the other side of the impression cylinder. The delivery in the present instance includes a rotary sheet carrier 5 8 provided with a set of grippers 9 arranged to take the printed sheets from the grippers 2 of the impression cylinder I and to'deliver the sheets to the coacting endless tape carriers I0, I I.
The reciprocating form bed 3 is provided With 10 a set of grippers I2 which operate to take the sheets from the feeder I and to transfer them to the impression cylinder grippers 2 at the bottom of the cylinder, as the bed moves forwardly on its printing stroke. 15
The sheet stop i3 for the feeder i may be operated in the usual manner to release a sheet at the proper time to the form bed grippers I2.
A cam I4 is provided for actuating the impression cylinder grippers 2, to cause them to take 20 a sheet from the form bed grippers I2 and to transfer the printed sheet to the rotary delivery carrier grippers 9.
Cams I5 and I6 are provided for causing the rotary delivery carrier grippers 9 to respectively 25 take the printed sheet from the impression cylinder grippers 2 and to deliver the sheet at the top of the rotary carrier to the endless delivery carriers II), II.
The form bed grippers I2 are shown as tum- 30 bler actuated, the tumbler cam I! being thrown by the laterally movable pin I8 in a direction to close the grippers onto the sheet at the feeder and by the laterally movable pin I9 to open the grippers, to release the sheet to the impression 35 cylinder grippers 2 at the bottom of the impression cylinder, as the bed moves forwardly on its printing stroke.
These pins I8 and. I9 are moved together into the path of thetumbler cam I! on the forward 4 or printing stroke of the bed and are moved together out of the path of the tumbler cam I! on the reverse or non-printing stroke of the bed. The means which I have shown for accomplishing this result comprises vertically disposed rock 45 shafts 20 and 2I having lever arms 22 and 23 respectively, carrying the laterally movable pins I8 and I 9. These vertically disposed rock shafts 2B and 2| also have lever arms 24, 25 connected by a bar 26. at the proper times to actuate the pins I8 and I9, by any well known or approved means not shown herein.
It will also be understood that any well known or approved means not shown herein may be 55 The rock shaft 29 may be rocked 5 employed to bring the impression cylinder and the form 4 into and out of coaction on the printing and non-printing strokes respectively of the bed, as is usual in this type of printing press.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided means whereby the sheets may be taken by the impression cylinder at its bottom, thus permitting the sheet feed and the sheet delivery to be located upon opposite sides of the impression cylinder without adding to the strokes of the impression cylinder and bed and at the same time allowing the printed sheets to be transferred to the endless delivery carriers at the top of the rotary delivery carrier.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not intend to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but
What I claim is:
1. In a bed and cylinder printing press, an
oscillating impression cylinder, a sheet feeder located at one side of the impression cylinder, a rotary delivery carrier located at the other side of the impression cylinder, a traveling endless delivery carrier, a reciprocating form bed, and coacting grippers on the form bed, the impression cylinder and the rotary delivery carrier, operable to pass the sheets from the feeder to the impression cylinder, from the impression cylinder to the rotary delivery carrier and from the rotary delivery carrier to the endless delivery carrier CALVERT B.
