IMPROVEMENT IN HATS AN D CAPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,005, dated April 2, 1878; application filed March 13, 1878. a

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, MARK DAVIS and SALE SIMoNsoN, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hats and Caps, which im-v provement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the acing attachments; and it has for its object to ventilate a hat or cap in a better manner than is possible by any of the means heretofore adopted for this purpose.

It consists in the combination, with a hat or cap having ventilating-holes in the lower part of its crown, of a perforated sweat-leather and a corrugated hat-band, which are respectivel y applied to the interior and exterior of the article, contiguous to said ventilating-holes, so that the ventilating-holes are concealed from view, while, when the hatis worn, a continuous and direct circulation of air is permitted to take place throughout the same, and by the peculiar arrangement of the parts the air in its circulation is caused to cool that part of the hat which touches the head of the wearer.

In the drawing, the letter A designates the crown of our hat, having holes a in its lower part. B is the sweat-leather, in which are formed perforations b, and O is the corrugated hat-band.

In the example shown, ourhat is constructed of covered straw, and provided with a perforated stiflening-strip, d, ofpasteboard or other similar material, on the inside, adjacent to the hat-brim but it can obviously also be made of any other material.

We stitch the sweat-leather to the hat in the usual way, and prefer to so arrange the same that it forms a truncated cone, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby a gradually-increasin g air space is formed between the sweat-band and the hat.

The corrugated band C is composed of buck ram, sized and pressed to the proper shape, or of any other stiff material, and it is held in its position immediately above the brim by being stitched to the hat at divers points, while it is, by preference, covered with a plain band or ribbon, c, of about equal width to the corrugated band.

It will be seen that while the air-holes d are concealed from view by the corrugated band 0, they are exposed to the air, and thus either vadmit or discharge air to or from the interior of the hat, the air, in its circulation, passing either through the holes in the sweat-leather B, or through the space between the latter and the hat, and the part of the hat which is in contact with the head being thereby kept cool. i

We prefer to form a greater number of holes in the sweat-leather B than in the hat, so as to insure the registering of a portion of the holes in each with those in the other, without regard to the manner in which the leather is put in position.

If desired, the crown A may be provided with holes at other points besides in its lower part, in order to increase the circulation of air.

We are aware that it is not new to use a corrugated band for the purpose of ventilating a hat or cap, and we do not claim this, in itself, as our invention but What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with a hat or cap having ventilating-holes in the lower part of its crown, of a perforated sweat-leather and a corrugated hat-band, respectively applied to the interior and exterior of the article, contiguous to said ventilating-holes, substantially as shown and described.
