Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof with the parts broken away to show the construction.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. The device comprises a sheet metal casing consisting of the upper and lower halves I and 2 which are hinged together at 3 as shown in Fig. 1. As shown in Fig. 3, the upper half of the casing is provided with two longitudinal channels 4 in which a block 5 is slidably mounted and these channels may be separate channels as shown or may be formed from the metal casing. The lower half of the casing is provided with two channels 6 in which a block 1 is slidably mounted and a knob 8 is secured to this block and extends through a slot 9 provided in the face of the casing, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The honing stone I0 is set into and cemented into the block 5 and a honing stone I I is set into and cemented in the block 1, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. A pin I2, shown in Fig. 1, is supported in the upper half I of the casing and a sleeve I3 is rotatably mounted on this pin. A flexible fabric strip I4 is secured to the block 5 at l5 and extends over the sleeve I3 and is secured to the block 1 at I6. The block 5, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is provided with a recess I1 and a coiled spring I8 is mounted in this `recessand'isfse'cured to theblock 5 by the' screw I9 while a lug 20 is struck inwardly from the v.upper half of tliecasing lifand'provides a hook overrwhich theopposite end of the spring I8 is engaged. lA lug 2| is also struck out from the 5 metal of thezupperi'part I of the casing and a .hook 22 is engagedoverthis lug and is 'arranged to' hook through a loop 23 Vpressed out from the lower half'2 of the casing; By this arrangement, 'the two `halvesrofthe casing may behooked to- 10 gether.

At the end opposite the thimble 21 the portions 25 and 25 are cylindrical in form and when as- 30 sembled form a circular collar 33 While a thimble 34 may be slipped over the outer ends of the parts 25 and 2S to clamp the blade between the portions 25 and 23 of the blade holder. The thimble 21 is provided with a collar 35 and a flat spring 35 36 is secured to the block 5 and rides in contact with the collar 35. A similar spring 31 is also secured to the block 5 and rides in contact with the collar 33.
In operation the hook 22 is disengaged to allow 40 the halves of the casing to be opened on the hinge 3. At this time the thimble 34 may be removed from the ends of the members 25 and 26 and the member 25 may be lifted up on the pivot 30 to allow the blade 32 to be inserted between the 45 rubber faces 3l of the holder parts.
At this time the part 26 is turned back to the position shown in Fig. 3 and the thimble is slipped over the ends of the parts 25 and 26 to clamp the blade in the holder and the casing parts may be 50 then hooked together. At this time the knob 8 may be moved from the position shown in full lines in Fig. l to the position shown in dotted lines in the said figure which will move the block 1 to the left of Fig. 1 and by means of the fabric strip 55 or belt I4 will draw the block 5 to the right of Fig. 1. As the block 5 is moved to the right of Fig. 1 the springs 36 and 31 riding on the collars 35 and 33 will turn the holder in its bearings to bring the blade to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. This position of the blade occurs as the blocks start their movement and the honing faces of the blocksv move against the opposite edges of the blade as will be understood from Fig. l thus grinding the edges. After the knob 8 has been moved to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 it is released and the spring I8 which has been extended by the movement of the block 5 will again draw the block 5 to the left of Fig. 1 and by means of the belt I4 will draw the block 1 to the right of Fig. 1. At this time the springs 36 and 31 turn the holder to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 thus grinding the remaining opposite edges of the blade. 'I'hese springs 36 and 31 put suicient pressure on theholder to hold the blade in rm contact with the honing stones and thus it is only necessary to move the knob 8 from the position shown in full lines to that shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, at which time, it may be released allowing the springs I8 to reverse the operation. After the blade has been positioned in the device it is only necessary to move the knob 8 from the position shown in fulllines to that shown in dotted lines and release it several times whereupon the blade is sharpened and ready for use.
While I have shown honing stones for sharpening the blades any ne abrasive surface may be utilized for this purpose and mounted on or applied to the sliding blocks.
From the foregoing description it becomes evident that the device is very simple and efficient in operation, will not easily get out of order, is composed of few parts and is of consequent low manufacturing cost and provides a device which accomplishes the objects described.
Having thus fully described my invention, its
utility and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. In a razor blade honing device, a casing comprising two parts hinged together, a block movable longitudinally of each casing part, .each block being provided with an abrasive face, a razor blade holder rotatably mounted between the casing parts and arranged to hold a razor blade, a
nected at the other end to the respective casing part, the arrangement being such that longitudinal movement of one block by means of the knob moves the other block in the opposite direction by means ofthe flexible strip and the spring being arranged for returning the blocks to the original position, a pair of flat springs attached to one of the blocks and riding' in engagement with the blade holder, the arrangement being such that movement of the block and flat springs in one direction by the knob turns the blade holder to bring the edges of the blade into contact with the abrasive faces o1' the blocks and movement of the said blocks in the opposite direction by the spring turns the blade holder in reverse direction to bring the remaining edges of the blade into contact with the abrasive faces of the blocks.

In a razor blade honing device, a casing comprising two parts hinged together, a block movable longitudinally of each casing part, each block being provided with an abrasive face, a razor blade holder` rotatably mounted between the casing parts and arranged to hold a razor blade, a pin extending through one casing part, a flexible strip attached to one block and extending over the pin and attached to the other block, the arrangement being such that longitudinal movement of one block moves the other block in the opposite direction, a spring for returning the blocks to the original position after movement thereof, a pair of at springs attached to one of the blocks and frictionally engaging the blade holder to turn the blade holder during movement of the blocks to bring the opposite edges of the blade into contact with the abrasive faces of the blocks.
