- The present invention relates to disposable lids for use with beverage containers to improve hygiene. More particularly, the invention relates to disposable lids that cover the top of a beverage container and allow a person to drink out of the container without placing his or her lips on the container itself.
- Description of the Related Art
- As society becomes more conscious of and concerned with good hygiene, many products have become available to minimize a person's contact with un-sanitized or unhygienic materials. Liquid hand sanitizer, once restricted the hospitals, is now commonplace at many public places, such as sports events in theaters. Grocery stores often provide sanitizing wipes to clean the handles of grocery carts. Straws are almost always not provided individually wrapped. Restaurants serve drinks with straws still having the upper part of the wrapper covering them.
- Beverage containers, such as 12 ounce soda cans, or an extremely efficient way of providing individual drinks without requiring classes or cups. However, soda cans usually travel substantially before reaching the hands of a person consuming the liquid inside. They are often handled by several people and exposed to a wide variety of environments. In the past, this has gone unnoticed. However, studies of shown that the top of a soda can is usually contaminated with a wide variety of undesirable materials, including dirt and germs. Pouring the contents of a can into a glass can reduce a person's exposure to material on the top of the can. Cans can also be rinsed prior to use. However, this is impractical in many common situations, such as picnicking, camping and attending sports events.
- The above-described deficiencies of today's systems are merely intended to provide an overview of some of the problems of conventional systems, and are not intended to be exhaustive. Other problems with the state of the art and corresponding benefits of some of the various non-limiting embodiments may become further apparent upon review of the following detailed description.

FIGS. 1-4 show an embodiment of adisposable container lid 10 in accordance with the principles of the invention. Thelid 10 includes a circular, planar cover 12 having anoblong opening 14 and an annularperipheral ridge 16 along its periphery. In this embodiment, except for theopening 14, the circular, planar cover 12 is continuous, that is having no other openings. The upper surface of theperipheral ridge 16 is curved, but may optionally be flat or angular. Thefront side 24 of thelid 10, which is the direction from which the contents of the container are dispensed, has abib 26 extending downward from the side of the annularperipheral ridge 16. Twoslots 28 are positioned on either side of thebib 20. Theoblong opening 14 includes adownward lip 30 that protrudes downward along thefront edge 32 of theopening 14. Theopening 14 is also sized to allow a pop-top or pull-tab mechanism to protrude through it when thelid 10 is attached to a can. Theopening 14 of this embodiment includes a curvedfront edge 32 and a parabolicallycurved back edge 34. Optionally, theopening 14 may have any configuration, such as for example a polygonal shape. Optionally, the parabolic curve defined by theback edge 34 may have a focal point at the center of the circle defined by the annularperipheral ridge 16. - As may be seen in
FIGS. 2 and 4 , agroove 18 is located on abottom side 15 of thelid 10. Thegroove 18 is directly underneath and extends into the annularperipheral ridge 16. Thegroove 18 is defined by anouter wall 20 and aninner wall 22 of theperipheral ridge 16.FIG. 4 shows thebottom edge 21 of theouter wall 20 includes a smallinterior lip 38 which partially extends inward, into the opening into thegroove 18. Thisinterior lip 38 allows thelid 10 to engage the protruding rim of a soda can and snap into place over the top of the soda can. Theinterior lip 38 on theouter wall 20 may be coextensive with theouter wall 20 or may optionally only extend along one or more portions of theouter wall 20. In this embodiment, thelip 38 extends around along the entireouter wall 20, except for the region on thefront side 24 of thelid 10 between the twoslots 28 on either side of thebib 26. -
FIGS. 5 and 6 show thelid 10 affixed to the top of a typical soda can 50. Theopening 14 in thecover 12 is large enough to provide access to both theaperture 52 and thepull tab 54 located on the top 56 of the soda can 50, when thelid 10 is affixed to thecan 50. Thelip 30 extends into theaperture 52 and abuts against thefront edge 33 of theaperture 52. Thebib 26 extends over thefront side 58 of thecan 50, covering the region of the can typically contacted by an operator's lips when drinking. - In use, the
disposable lid 10 may be placed over a soda can 50 before the can is opened. Theplanar body 12 is configured such that it lies substantially flush with the top 56 of a soda can when the peripheralannular ridge 62 of thecan 50 has been snapped into thegroove 18. Thelip 30 is configured to lie substantially flush with the front boundary of theaperture 52 of the soda can. Because there is nothing blocking the path of thepull tab 54, thelid 10 may be affixed to a soda can prior to the soda can being opened. For this reason, theopening 14 is a single, large opening. Thebib 26 prevents a drinker's lower lip from coming in the contact with the can. - Once the
lid 10 is secured in place, thepull tab 54 may be used to open theaperture 52. As soon as theaperture 52 is opened, thelip 30 extends through theaperture 52. When a person drinks from the can, his or her lips will typically contact thebib 26, thecover 12 and theannular ridge 16, but will not come into contact with the top 56 of thecan 50. Substantially all of the liquid poured from the can will come into contact with thelip 30, while only a very small portion of the liquid will come in to contact with the top 56 of thecan 50. -
FIGS. 7-11 show an alternative embodiment of adisposable container lid 80 in accordance with the principles of the invention.Container lid 80 includes a circular, planar cover 82, anoblong opening 84 and an annularperipheral ridge 86 extending about the cover's 82 periphery. These features are similar to thecover 12, opening 14 andannular ridge 16 found in thelid 10 shown inFIGS. 1-6 . Theoblong opening 84 is sized to provide access to both a pull tab and an aperture in the top of a soda can. Thedisposable container lid 80 similarly includes agroove 88 defined by aninner wall 90 and anouter wall 92. Theouter wall 92 also includes an inward facinginterior lip 94 and twoslots 96 extending from the bottom to the top of theouter wall 92. Theslots 96 provide flexibility for theouter wall 92 in order to allow thelid 82 to more easily engage and snap onto the top of a can.Disposable container lid 80 includes atab 98 extending from the backside 100 of thelid 80. Thetab 98 extends perpendicularly outward from theouter wall 92. Thetab 98 may be used to remove thelid 80 from a can more easily and may optionally be used to assist in opening the can by serving as a lever to place underneath the pop-top. - The
opening 84 includes alip 104 that extends downward so that it lies flush against the front side of an aperture in a soda can. Thus, it functions in the same way as thelip 30 shown inFIGS. 1-6 . However, thelid 80 includes a feature not found inFIGS. 1-6 . Specifically, thedisposable container lid 80 includes aspout 110 extending upward on the front of theopening 84. Thespout 110 has a generally curved shape and guides liquids dispensed from the container in the desired direction. In use, the lower lip of a person who is drinking through thelid 80 will come into contact only with thefront side 114 of thespout 110. Thefront side 114 of thespout 110 is contiguous and flush with theprotective lip 104. The upper lip of the person will extend over theback side 116 of thespout 110. Thus, a person drinking through thelid 80 will not come into direct contact with the top of a can. Similarly, the contents of the can will come into little or no contact with the top of the can because they will flow over thelip 104 and across theback side 116 of thespout 110. -
FIGS. 12-14 show another alternative embodiment of adisposable container lid 120 in accordance with the principles of the invention.Container lid 120 includes a circular, planar cover 122, anoblong opening 124 and an annularperipheral ridge 126 extending about the cover's 122 periphery. These features are similar to thecover 12, opening 14 andannular ridge 16 found in thelid 10 shown inFIGS. 1-6 . This embodiment of acontainer lid 120 also includes a shallowannular channel 123 around the outside of thecover 122 adjacent to theperipheral ridge 126. Theoblong opening 124 is sized to provide access to both a pull tab and an aperture in the top of a soda can. Thedisposable container lid 120 also includes agroove 128 underneath theannular ridge 126, and defined by aninner wall 130 and anouter wall 132. Theouter wall 132 also includes aninward facing lip 134 and twoslots 136. Theslots 136 provide flexibility for theouter wall 132 in order to allow thelid 122 snap onto the top of a can more easily.Disposable container lid 120 includes atab 138 extending from thebackside 140 of thelid 120. Thetab 138 extends downward from theouter wall 132. Thetab 138 may be used to remove thelid 120 from a can more easily. Alip 144 extends downward from the front edge of theopening 124. Thedisposable lid 120 also includes an annular channel adjacent to theannular Ridge 126 along the periphery of thecircular cover 122. Thecontainer lid 120 has neither a spout more a downward tab on its front side. -
FIGS. 15-22 show another alternative embodiment of a disposable container lid, adisposable lid 160 in accordance with principles of the invention.FIGS. 19, 21 and 23 show thedisposable lid 160 removably affixed to a soda can 200 in accordance with principles of the invention. Thedisposable container lid 160 includes acircular cover 162 that is substantially planar and continuous except foropening 163. As with other embodiments, and annularperipheral ridge 164 extends around the periphery of thecover 162.Peripheral ridge 164 includes a flattened top 166 extending between anouter wall 168 and aninner wall 170. Theouter wall 168,inner wall 170 andtop surface 166 together form agroove 172 on the bottom surface 174 of thelid 160 sized to snap on to therim 204 of a typical soda can 200. Thedisposable container lid 160 includes afront side 176, which an operator presses to his or her lips in order to drink from a soda can 200 as described in more detail below. - The front 176 includes a
bib 178 extending from thebottom 180 of theouter wall 168 of theperipheral ridge 164. Thebib 178 extends downward from theouter wall 168 at an angle and is curved and lies substantially flush against the upperfront region 202 of a soda can 200 upon which thedisposable container lid 160 has been removably attached. In use, thebib 178 covers the upperfront region 202 of the soda can 200 that would otherwise be contacted by the lower lip of an operator. Theouter wall 168 also includes fourslots 180 extending from thebottom 180 of theouter wall 168 to the top 166 of theperipheral ridge 164. Inside thegroove 172, theouter wall 168 includes a plurality ofangled teeth 182 tapering upward from thebottom 180 of theouter wall 168 into thegroove 172. When thelid 160 engages a soda can 200, theangled teeth 182 snap over therim 204 of a soda can 200, thereby holding thelid 160 in place. Theangled teeth 182 serve the same purpose as theinterior lip 38 shown inFIG. 4 . The use ofteeth 182 rather than a continuous lip allows the disposable lid to be manufactured using less material. Generally, the teeth and the interior lip may be interchanged among embodiments. Theouter wall 168 also includes one ormore slots 185 extending from thebottom 180 of theouter wall 168 to theupper surface 166 of theperipheral ridge 164. Theslots 185 provide flexibility to theouter wall 168. - Referring to
FIGS. 19-22 , theopening 163 ofdisposable container lid 160 has a more complex shape than the openings of other embodiments. The shape of theopening 163 minimizes exposure to the top surface of a soda can 200. Theopening 163 has an ovalfront region 184, a substantially rectangularcentral region 186 and asemicircular back region 188. The rectangularcentral region 186 and thesemicircular back region 188 are configured to be slightly larger than the area of the pop-top actuating tab 206 on thetop surface 208 of a soda can 200. The ovalfront region 184 is sized and positioned to align with theaperture 210 on the top 208 the soda can 200 to which it is attached. Adownward lip 190 extends downward from edge of the entirefront region 184 of theopening 163, so that thedownward lip 190 extends into theaperture 210 of a soda can 200 to which it is attached. Thedownward lip 190 has anouter surface 191 that lies flush with, i.e. abuts against, the side edges 212 andfront edge 214 of thesoda can aperture 210, leaving only exposed theback edge 216 of theaperture 210 covered by theactuating tab 206. This design minimizes exposure to the top 208 of the soda can 200 and prevents contact between liquid exiting thecan 200 and thetop surface 208, underneath thecover 162. Thedownward lip 190 ofdisposable container lid 160 extends further downward than theouter wall 168, and optionally extends a distance downward from thecover 162 equal to a distance upward that theinner wall 170 extends from thecover 162. Thedownward lip 190 is configured to lie flush against the edge of the aperture of the soda can aperture. I.e., the outside surface 192 of thedownward lip 190 abuts against the edge of the aperture of the soda can 200. - Whereas, the present invention has been described in relation to the drawings attached hereto, other and further modifications, apart from those shown or suggested herein, may be made within the spirit and scope of this invention. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that the conception, upon which this disclosure is based, may readily be utilized as a basis for the designing of other structures, methods and systems for carrying out the several purposes of the present invention. Descriptions of the embodiments shown in the drawings should not be construed as limiting or defining the ordinary and plain meanings of the terms of the claims unless such is explicitly indicated. The claims should be regarded as including such equivalent constructions insofar as they do not depart from the spirit and scope of the present invention.
