Abstract
A method of transporting storage components includes the step of aligning a pallet that has a plurality of cavities that extend through the pallet on a fixture that has a plurality of plugs that each correspond to a location of the plurality of cavities that extend through the pallet. A wheel is aligned on a dolly with one of the cavities in the pallet. The wheel is supported on the dolly with the plug on the fixture. The pallet is separated from the fixture such that the wheel on the dolly becomes recessed in a corresponding one of the cavities in the pallet.
Description
- This application is a divisional of application Ser. No. 15/200,133 filed Jul. 1, 2016, which claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 62/187,988, filed Jul. 2, 2015.
- Pallets are often used to transport goods. Pallets may include an upper deck supported above the floor so that the tines of a forklift or pallet lift jack can be inserted below the deck to lift the pallet and goods. The goods can be stacked directly on the pallet or placed on stackable trays. The stackable trays can be placed directly on the pallet for transport with or without goods stacked thereon.
- In one exemplary embodiment, a method of transporting storage components comprising the step of aligning a pallet that has a plurality of cavities that extend through the pallet on a fixture that has a plurality of plugs that each correspond to a location of the plurality of cavities that extend through the pallet. A wheel is aligned on a dolly with one of the cavities in the pallet. The wheel is supported on the dolly with the plug on the fixture. The pallet is separated from the fixture such that the wheel on the dolly becomes recessed in a corresponding one of the cavities in the pallet.

example pallet assembly 10 is shown inFIG. 1 . Thepallet assembly 10 includes anupper portion 12 and alower portion 14. In the illustrated example, theupper portion 12 and thelower portion 14 are each rotationally molded as individual pieces. Alternatively, theupper portion 12 and thelower portion 14 could be injection molded as individual pieces. Theupper portion 12 includes anupper deck 16 having an upper surface for supporting a dolly thereon.Upper column portions 18 extending downward from theupper deck 16. Thelower portion 14 of thepallet assembly 10 includescolumn receiver portions 20 for accepting theupper column portions 18 andrunners 22 extending between thecolumn receiver portions 20. - The
pallet assembly 10 includes a pair ofside walls 26 and a pair ofopposing end walls 28 that each include a pair offork openings 24 for accepting tines on a fork lift to move thepallet assembly 10. -
FIG. 2 illustrates a side view andFIG. 3 illustrates an end view of thepallet assembly 10. Theupper deck 16 includes asupport structure 30 that extends upward from theupper deck 16 for increasing the rigidity of theupper portion 12 of thepallet assembly 10. As shown inFIGS. 1-3 , thesupport structure 30 extends a first distance in the direction of theside walls 26 and a second distance in the direction of theend walls 28 with the first distance being greater than the second distance. In another example, the second distance could be greater than the first distance. Thesupport structure 30 includesangled corner portions 32 and a curvedupper edge 34 between anupper surface 36 and aperimeter wall 38. In another example, the corner portions could be rounded and theupper edge 34 could be angled. -
FIG. 4 illustrates a top view of thepallet assembly 10 includingchannels 40 separated bycavities 42 that form discontinuities in thechannels 40. Thechannels 40 extend in a direction parallel to theside walls 26 and perpendicular to theend walls 28 to allow entry into thechannels 40 from eitherend wall 28. In another example 40, thechannels 40 extend in a direction parallel to theend walls 28 and perpendicular to theside walls 26. Thecavities 42 extend through theupper portion 12 and thelower portion 14 through theupper column portions 18 to form an opening extending through thepallet assembly 10. -
FIG. 5 illustrates a bottom view of thepallet assembly 10. Thecavities 42 form openings extending through thelower portion 14. Therunners 22 definerunner openings 44 extending through thelower portion 14 which reduces the weight of thelower portion 14 by reducing the amount of material in thelower portion 14 while also contributing to the rigidity of thelower portion 14. -
FIGS. 6-8 illustratereinforcement members 46 located in theupper portion 12 between theupper deck 16 and thefork openings 24. In one example, thereinforcement members 46 are made of metal, such as steel or aluminum, and in another example, thereinforcement members 46 are made of a reinforced composite material. - As shown in
FIG. 8 , thereinforcement members 46 surround a perimeter of theupper portion 12. In the illustrated example, adjacent ends of thereinforcement members 46 are separated or spaced from each other at the corners of theupper portion 12. In another example, the ends of thereinforcement members 46 are secured to anadjacent reinforcement member 46 at the corners of theupper portion 12. Thereinforcement members 46 are located inward from an outer perimeter of theupper portion 12 and outward thecavities 42. In another example, thereinforcement members 46 could be located in thelower portion 14 spaced inward from a perimeter of thelower portion 14 and outward from thecavities 42 extending through thelower portion 14. -
FIG. 9 illustrates thepallet assembly 10 positioned above afixture 50. Thefixture 50 includes alower surface 52 for supporting thelower portion 14 of thepallet assembly 10 and plugs 54 extending upward from thefixture 50 for slidably engaging a corresponding one of thecavities 42 in thepallet assembly 10. Thefixture 50 could be made of a polymer, a composite, or a metallic material. -
FIG. 10 illustrates thefixture 50 in engagement with thepallet assembly 10. Each of theplugs 54 is received in a corresponding one of thecavities 42 in order to fill the discontinuities in thechannels 40. Theplugs 54 allow adolly 60 havingcasters 62 to roll through thechannels 40 as shown inFIG. 11 . The distal ends of theplugs 54 include mating surfaces 56 to restrict movement of thecasters 62. In the illustrated example, the mating surfaces 56 are concave to provide a mild restriction to movement of thedolly 60 placed on thepallet assembly 10. - As shown in
FIGS. 12 and 13 , once thepallet assembly 10 is separated from thefixture 50, thecasters 62 on thedolly 60 lower into thecavities 42 on thepallet assembly 10 until alower surface 64 on thedolly 60 contacts theupper deck 16 on thepallet assembly 10. Theplugs 54 adjacent a mid-portion of thepallet assembly 10 are sized to accommodatemultiple casters 62. In another example, theplugs 54 could be sized to supportindividual casters 62. Thecasters 62 do not carry any weight from thedolly 60 when thepallet assembly 10 is removed from thefixture 50. Thesupport structure 30 is received within acentral opening 66 in thedolly 60 to locate thedolly 60 relative to thepallet assembly 10 and increase the rigidity of theupper portion 12 of thepallet assembly 10. -
FIG. 14 illustrates thefixture 50 located adjacent aramp 70 andFIG. 15 illustrates thepallet assembly 10 located on thefixture 50 adjacent theramp 70. Theramp 70 includes anupper surface 72 that is aligned with thechannel 40 such that theupper surface 72 is same height as thechannel 40 to allow thecaster 62 to roll easily from theramp 70 into thechannel 40 as shown inFIG. 16 . In the illustrated example, thepallet assembly 10 is sized to accommodate fourdollies 60, however, thepallet assembly 10 could be configured to accept more or less than fourdollies 60. As shown inFIG. 17 , once the pallet assembly is loaded with fourdollies 60, thepallet assembly 10 with thedollies 60 can be lifted off of thefixture 50 and the fourdollies 60 lower into thepallet assembly 10 in unison. -
FIG. 18 illustrates thedollies 60 shown inFIG. 17 each loaded withtrays 80. Thetrays 80 are received on anupper surface 68 of thedollies 60 and at least partially retained by aperimeter ledge 69 surrounding a perimeter of each of thedollies 60. - Once the
pallet assembly 10 is fully loaded withdollies 60 andtrays 80, afork lift 82 can engage thefork openings 24 in thepallet assembly 10 withtines 84 to lift thepallet assembly 10 off of thefixture 50 as shown inFIG. 19 . While thefork lift 82 is lifting thepallet assembly 10 off of thefixture 50, thecasters 62 on thedollies 60 will lower into thecavities 42. As shown inFIG. 20 , thefork lift 82 can then transport thepallet assembly 10 with thedollies 60 and thetrays 80 in astorage system 90, such as a shelf or rack, for later use. - When the
trays 80 and dollies 60 are needed, thefork lift 82 can retrieve thetrays 80 and dollies 60 on thepallet assembly 10 from thestorage system 90 and lower thepallet assembly 10 onto thefixture 50. Theplugs 54 on thefixture 50 raise thecasters 62 out of thecavities 42 to align the mating surfaces 56 on theplugs 54 with thechannels 40 in theupper deck 16. Auser 92 can then remove thetrays 80 on thedollies 60 by rolling thecasters 62 out of thechannels 40 and down theramp 70 for use as shown inFIGS. 21-22 . As shown inFIG. 21 , theramp 70 may include guide elements 72 a to aid in directing thecasters 62 into thechannels 40 when reloading thepallet assembly 10. -
FIG. 23 illustrates thefixture 50 located adjacent aplatform 100 for loading and unloading thedollies 60. Theplatform 100 includes anupper surface 102 that is aligned with thechannels 40 in theupper deck 16 of thepallet assembly 10 to allow thecasters 62 on the dollies to roll into thechannels 40 and onto thepallet assembly 10. Theplatform 100 maintains thedollies 60 at the height of thechannels 40 so that thedollies 60 do not need to be pushed up theramp 70 to reach the pallet assembly 10 (FIG. 25 ) and to be removed by the fork lift 82 (FIG. 27 ). Thedollies 60 andtrays 80 could also be placed on thepallet assembly 10 with anautomated system 94 that advances thetrays 80 and thedollies 60 along theplatform 100 as shown inFIG. 26 . - The
platform 100 is located adjacent only oneend wall 28 of thepallet assembly 10 to allow access to thefork openings 24 on the three remaining sides of thepallet assembly 10 to raise or lower thepallet assembly 10 relative to thefixture 50. -
FIG. 28 illustrates anotherexample pallet assembly 110. Thepallet assembly 110 is similar to thepallet assembly 10 except where described below or shown in the Figures. Thepallet assembly 110 is a single piece pallet fabricated from metal, such as steel or aluminum. Thepallet assembly 110 includes anupper portion 112 and alower portion 114 connected bycolumns 118 extending between theupper portion 112 and thelower portion 114. Theupper portion 112 includes anupper deck 116 having an upper surface for supporting thedollies 60 thereon. Thepallet assembly 110 includes a pair of opposingside walls 126 and a pair of opposingend walls 128 that each include a pair offork openings 124 for accepting thetines 84 on thefork lift 82 to move thepallet assembly 110 relative to thefixture 50. Thefork openings 124 are at least partially defined by theupper portion 112, thelower portion 114, and thecolumns 118. -
FIG. 29 illustrates a side view andFIG. 30 illustrates an end view of thepallet assembly 110. Theupper deck 116 includes asupport structure 130 that extends upward from theupper deck 116 for supporting the base of thetray 80 and engaging theopening 66 in thedolly 60. As shown inFIGS. 28-30 , thesupport structure 130 extends a first distance in the direction of theside walls 126 and a second distance in the direction of theend walls 128 with the first distance being greater than or approximately equal to the second distance. Thesupport surface 130 includes angledcorner portions 132 and anangled perimeter wall 138 between thesupport surface 130 and theupper deck 116. -
FIG. 31 illustrates a top view of thepallet assembly 110 includinglongitudinal channels 140 a and lateralstructural channels 140 b each separated bycavities 142. Thelongitudinal channels 140 a extend in a direction parallel to theside walls 126 and the lateralstructural channels 140 b extend in a direction parallel to theend walls 128. Thecavities 142 extend through theupper portion 112, thelower portion 114, and thecolumns 118 to form an opening extending through thepallet assembly 110 and discontinuities in thelongitudinal channels 140 a and lateralstructural channels 140 b. The lateralstructural channels 140 b are similar to thelongitudinal channels 140 a, but serve the primary function of increasing the structural rigidity of theupper deck 116. -
FIG. 32 illustrates a bottom view of thepallet assembly 110. Thecavities 142 form openings extending through thelower portion 114.Runners 122 definerunner openings 144 that also extend through thelower portion 114 to reduce the weight of thelower portion 114 by reducing the amount of material in thelower portion 114 while also contributing to the rigidity of thelower portion 114. - Although a fixture is now shown in relation with the
pallet assembly 110, a fixture similar to thefixture 50 could be utilized with thepallet assembly 110. Plugs on the fixture could be located within thecavities 142 in thepallet assembly 110 to fill discontinuities in thechannels 140 a and allow thecasters 62 to roll onto thepallet assembly 110 freely. - Although the different non-limiting embodiments are illustrated as having specific components, the embodiments of this disclosure are not limited to those particular combinations. It is possible to use some of the components or features from any of the non-limiting embodiments in combination with features or components from any of the other non-limiting embodiments.
- It should be understood that like reference numerals identify corresponding or similar elements throughout the several drawings. It should also be understood that although a particular component arrangement is disclosed and illustrated in these exemplary embodiments, other arrangements could also benefit from the teachings of this disclosure.
- The foregoing description shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in any limiting sense. A worker of ordinary skill in the art would understand that certain modifications could come within the scope of this disclosure. For these reasons, the following claims should be studied to determine the true scope and content of this disclosure.
Claims (20)
1. A method of transporting storage components comprising the steps of:
aligning a pallet having a plurality of cavities extending through the pallet on a fixture having a plurality of plugs each corresponding to a location of the plurality of cavities extending through the pallet;
aligning a wheel on a dolly with one of the cavities in the pallet;
supporting the wheel on the dolly with the plug on the fixture; and
separating the pallet from the fixture such that the wheel on the dolly becomes recessed in a corresponding one of the cavities in the pallet.
2. The method of claim 1 , including stacking a plurality of trays on the pallet.
3. The method of claim 2 , including locating the dolly on the pallet with a support structure extending upward from an upper surface of the pallet.
4. The method of claim 1 including rolling the wheel on the dolly through a channel in an upper surface of the pallet.
5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the channel includes a plurality of channels and at least two of the plurality of cavities are located in each of the plurality of channels.
6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of channels includes two pairs of channels extending between opposing edges of the upper portion.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein a first cavity of the plurality of cavities includes a first length and a second cavity of the plurality of cavities includes a second length and the second length is greater than the first length.
8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the support structure is located between a pair of the plurality of channels.
9. The method of claim 5 , wherein each of the plurality of channels include at least three cavities and at least two support structures located between adjacent pairs of the plurality of channels.
10. The method of claim 1 , wherein supporting the wheel on the dolly with the plug on the fixture includes locating a support surface of the plug in alignment surface a support surface of a channel in an upper surface of the pallet.
11. The method of claim 1 , including retaining a wheel on the dolly with a concave support surface of the plug.
12. The method of claim 4 , including aligning the wheel on the dolly with the channel in the supper surface of the pallet with a ramp surface on a ramp aligned with the channel.
13. The method of claim 12 , including supporting the fixture and the pallet with the ramp.
14. The method of claim 13 , wherein separating the pallet from the fixture includes recessing the wheel in a corresponding one of a plurality of columns extending between an upper surface to a base portion.
15. A method of transporting storage components comprising the steps of:
aligning a pallet having a plurality of cavities extending through the pallet on a fixture having a plurality of plugs each corresponding to a location of the plurality of cavities extending through the pallet;
rolling a wheel on a dolly over a first plug of the plurality of plugs and aligning the wheel on the dolly with a second plug of the plurality of plugs;
supporting the wheel on the dolly with the second plug on the fixture; and
separating the pallet from the fixture such that the wheel on the dolly becomes recessed in a corresponding one of the cavities in the pallet.
16. The method of claim 1 , including stacking a plurality of trays on the pallet and locating the dolly on the pallet with a support structure extending upward from an upper surface of the pallet.
17. The method of claim 15 including rolling the wheel on the dolly through a channel in an upper surface of the pallet.
18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the channel includes a plurality of channels and at least two of the plurality of cavities are located in each of the plurality of channels.
19. The method of claim 15 , wherein supporting the wheel on the dolly with the plug on the fixture includes locating a support surface of the plug in alignment surface a support surface of a channel in an upper surface of the pallet.
20. The method of claim 15 , wherein separating the pallet from the fixture includes recessing the wheel in a corresponding one of a plurality of columns extending between an upper surface to a base portion.
