Eachramp 88 contacts one ofsurfaces 96 such that relative circumferential motion betweendrive flange 70 andbias spring 90 causes contact between theramps 88 and surfaces 96 to generate a force onturbine piston 20. Whendamper assembly 62 travels into the coast direction, ramps 88 contact surfaces 96 to produce an axial force that is transmitted bybias spring 90 toturbine piston 20. In alternative embodiment, surfaces 96 may be formed as ramps that taper in a manner that match therespective ramps 88. In other embodiments, surfaces 96 may be formed as ramps instead of surfaces 88. -

A plurality of circumferentially spacedfingers 104 protrude axially away from and radially inward frombase section 102 and extend axially through spaces circumferentially betweendiaphragm engaging tabs 94 to join an annularinner base section 106, which form an inner diameter ofspacer 98.Fingers 104, via aturbine side surface 104 a thereof, contact a front cover side surface 90 a ofdiaphragm spring 90 to preventdiaphragm spring 90 from moving axially away fromturbine 20. A frontcover side surface 106 a ofinner base section 106 contacts a turbine side surface 70 a ofdrive flange 70. - A method of forming
torque converter 10 may include providingbias spring 90 in contact with front cover side surface 31 a of innerradial extension 31 ofturbine piston 20 and then fixingspacer plate 98, viarivets 100, toturbine piston 20 such thatspacer plate 98 holdsbias spring 90 against front cover side surface 31 a of innerradial extension 31 ofturbine piston 20. -
FIGS. 2 to 5 illustrate various views ofturbine assembly 19.FIG. 2 shows a cross-sectional side view of a radially inner portion ofturbine assembly 19, providing an enlarged view ofdiaphragm spring 90 andspacer plate 98.FIG. 3 shows a side view of the entirety ofturbine assembly 19.FIG. 4 shows a plan view of a front cover facing side ofturbine assembly 19.FIG. 5 shows a perspective view of the front cover facing side ofturbine assembly 19. -
FIG. 2 illustratesspacer plate 98 being fixed to innerradial extension 31 ofturbine shell 22 byrivets 100.Fingers 104 extend fromouter base section 98 in betweentabs 94 toinner base section 106 and contact a front cover side surface 91 a ofbase ring 91 ofdiaphragm spring 90 via turbine side surfaces 104 a offingers 104 to maintain a preload force F1 and transmit coast torque frompiston turbine 20 todiaphragm spring 90.Inner tabs 92 contact front cover side surface 31 a of innerradial extension 31 andouter tabs 94 are configured for contactingramps 88 of drive flange 70 (FIGS. 1a, 1b ) to generate a ramp load force F2.Tabs 92 extend from the inner diameter ofbase ring 91 ofdiaphragm spring 90 andtabs 94 extend from the outer diameter ofbase ring 91.FIG. 2 further illustratesturbine blades 26 and the attachment ofturbine blades 26 tocore ring 24. -
FIG. 3 illustrates the positioning ofspacer plate 98 anddiaphragm spring 90 onturbine shell 22.Outer tabs 94 are shown extending radially through spaces formed betweenfingers 104 and outsidepast fingers 104. Drivering 68 is shown fixed to a front cover facing surface ofturbine shell 22 atblade supporting portion 28, withannular base 70 being is fixed in contact with the front cover facing surface ofturbine shell 22 and drivetabs 62 protruding radially outward and axially away fromannular base 70.FIG. 3 further illustratesfriction material 40 formed as a ring on outerradial extension 30 ofturbine shell 22. -

Outer base section include anouter ring 110 forming an outer circumferential surface ofspacer plate 98 andrivet receiving protrusions 112 extending radially inward fromouter ring 110 for receivingrivets 100. As viewed axially, as shown inFIG. 4 , inner surfaces ofprotrusions 112 are defined by arc-shaped cutouts 114 formed inspacer plate 98. Arc-shaped cutouts 114 also each define oneedge 104 b of twodifferent fingers 104. Further cutouts 116, which are rectangular in shape with curved corners as viewed axially, are provided between cutouts 114, such that cutouts 114 alternate with cutouts 116 in the circumferential direction. Cutouts 116 also each define one contact edge 104 c of one offingers 104, such that everyother finger 104 includes one contact edge 104 c. In standard operation, a torque transmittingside surface 94 a of each oftabs 94 ofbias spring 90 contacts and transmits torque through a respective one of contact edges 104 c. Accordingly, tabs 94 transmit torque fromturbine 20 throughspacer plate 98 via contact edges 104 c to generate the axial force viaramps 96 Cutouts 114, 116 are all formed radially betweenouter base section 102 andinner base section 106. Each ofouter tabs 94 extends radially and axially through a respective one of cutouts 114.Inner tabs 92 extend radially inside of the inner diameter ofinner base section 106. Roundedblade supporting portion 28 is positioned radially outside ofspace plate 98 and supports drivering 68, which includesannular base 70 and a plurality of circumferentially spaceddrive tabs 64. Outerradial extension 30 ofturbine shell 22 extends radially outsidepast drive ring 68. - In the preceding specification, the invention has been described with reference to specific exemplary embodiments and examples thereof. It will, however, be evident that various modifications and changes may be made thereto without departing from the broader spirit and scope of invention as set forth in the claims that follow. The specification and drawings are accordingly to be regarded in an illustrative manner rather than a restrictive sense.
