The present invention relates to an improvement in lavatory equipment, and has for its primary object the elimination of the noise incident both to the flushing of the toilet and to the dropping or slamming of the toilet seat.

Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a toilet silencer which is adapted to contain a deodorizer for the toilet, and which issimple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to apply, thoroughly reliable in use, and otherwise well adapted to the purposes for which it is designed.

A further object is to provide means for retaining the silencer to either the bowl or seat of the toilet.

With the above and numerous other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of ,parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the drawings:-

Figure 1 is a top plan view of a toilet bowl, showing my silencer attached thereto, a portion of the device being illustrated in section.

Figure 2 is a vertical section taken substantially on the line 2--2 of Figure 1 showing the toilet seat.

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the clips for holdingthe silencer in place.

Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of a seat showing the silencer attached thereto.

Figure 5 is a sectional view through the upper portion. of the bowl, showing the seat in raised position, partly in section.

Figure 6 is a detailed section taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Figure 1, through the silencer; and

Figures 7, 8, 9 and 10 are each a modified view of the silencer, showing modified means of attaching the silencer to the bowl.

Referring to the drawings in detail, and first particularly to the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, it will be seen that the letter B denotes a conventional toilet bowl and the letter C a conventional seat. The silencer consists of a pad P, which may be formed of rubber or other suitable sound preventing material. This pad is mounted on the upper rim of the bowl B, and is held in place by arcuate clips 4, which are made of spring steel or other resilient material to grip the rim of the bowl. Each clip is inserted in the pad P to permit the free end 5 of the clip to grip the rim of the bowl,

the body i of each clip being mounted in the pad.

In order to provide the pad P with a deodorizing agent, the pad is provided with a series of transverse orifices I, in which are disposed 0311- 5 inders or the like 8, as clearly shown in Figure 6. Each of these cylinders contains a deodorant.

It will be apparent from the disclosure of the various figures of the drawings that the contact surface of the pad between the seat and the bowl 1o edge is fiat, thus increasing the sealing eflect between these parts of the toilet.

The modified views, Figures 4 and 5, illustrate a pad P which, instead or being attached to the bowl B, is attached to the underside of the seat 15 C, by means of screws 9. It is apparent that when the seat is lowered toward the bowl B, the pad rests between the rim of the bowl and the seat, thus attaining the silencing features of pad P, illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. 20

Figures 7, 8, 9 and 10 each illustrate a modified silencing pad P", the modification in each view being in the means of retaining the pad in place.

Referring particularly to Figure 7, the pad P" has its underside grooved as at In to form an air 25 space, which creates a suction between the underside of the pad and the rim of the bowl B". In this manner the pad is retained in place without the use of springs, screws or other fastening means. 3a

Figure 8 shows the pad P provided with a single flange H, which grips the inside of the rim of the bowl B", thereby securing the silencing pad in place.

Figure 9 illustrates the pad P" as being se- 35 cured in place by a single flange l3, which grips the outside of the rim of the bowl B".

The silencing pad P shown in Figure 10 is provided with a double flange M, which grips both the inside and the outside of the rim of the bowl t e B" to retain the pad in place on the bowl.

, Each of the modified forms of silencing pads may be provided with orifices similar to those designated by the numeral 1, for the purpose of the noise accompanying the flushing of a toilet and the lowering of the seat to be positioned over 55 the bowl. It is also apparent that the silencing pad may be easily removed, either from the bowl or from the seat, in order to facilitate cleaning and to insure sanitary conditions.

Various changes may be made in my invention, within the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed is:-

1. In combination, a toilet bowl, a hinged toilet seat, and between the two a continuous, ring-like, compressible and resilient silencing pad having a flat contact surface thus completely sealing the space therebetween.

2. In combination, a toilet bowl, a hinged toilet seat, and between the two a continuous, ring-like, compressible and resilient silencing pad having a flat contact surface thus completely sealing the space therebetween, and means for securing the pad in position.

3. In combination, a toilet bowl, a hinged toilet seat, and between the two a continuous, ring-like, compressible and resilient silencing pad having a flat contact surface thus completely sealing the space therebetween, and means for removably securing the pad in position.

4. In combination, a toilet bowl, a toilet seat, and between the two a continuous, ring-like, compressible and resilient silencing pad completely sealing the space therebetween, said pad carry-. ing deodorant material.

5. In combination, a toilet bowl, a toilet seat, and between the two a continuous, ring-like, compressible and resilient silencing pad completely sealing the space therebetween, the said pad being provided with a transversely apertured portion and carrying in said transversely apertured portion deodorant material.

6. An article of manufacture for use between a toilet bowl and hinged seat, comprising a continuous, ring-like, compressible and resilient pad having a flat contact surface.
