Abstract
A pillow and a pillow cover are provided. The pillow includes a cover layer defining an interior volume, the cover layer having a body portion and one or more mesh portions. The pillow further includes a filler material disposed in the interior volume. The interior volume is in fluid communication with the external atmosphere via the one or more mesh portions. The pillow cover includes a cover layer defining an interior volume. The interior volume is configured to receive the filler. The cover layer includes having a body portion and one or more mesh portions. The interior volume is in fluid communication with the external atmosphere via the one or more mesh portions.
Description
- This application is a continuation-in-part of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 14/560,419, filed Dec. 4, 2014, and U.S. patent application Ser. No. 14/644,931, filed Mar. 11, 2015, the disclosures of which are incorporated herein in their entirety.
- The following description relates to a pillow, and in particular, a pillow having mesh inserts
- A pillow typically includes an outer layer or cover, such as a pillow shell, generally made of a fabric material. The outer layer defines an internal space configured to house a padding or filler material. The outer layer may include one or more pieces of fabric stitched around the inner padding or filler material. Further, or alternatively, the outer layer may include a zipper, slide fastener or other similar fastener along at least a portion of one or more sides to selectively provide or restrict access to the internal space.
- The fabric of the outer layer may be generally homogenous such that similar properties are found across the outer layer. For example, the fabric may have generally the same stiffness, softness and/or density across the outer layer. Accordingly, a breathability of the fabric, i.e., an ability to allow air to flow between the internal space and external atmosphere may be generally constant across the outer layer.
- In use, a person may lean, lie, sit or otherwise support a portion of their body on or against the pillow. Heat from the person may be transferred to the pillow via contact between the person and the outer layer. With limited or restricted breathability through the outer layer, i.e., with limited airflow through the outer layer, the heat may be retained by the pillow, both in the outer layer and the inner padding or filler. As result, a temperature of the pillow may increase to a point where it causes discomfort for the person using the pillow, particularly at a location where the person is in contact with the pillow.
- Accordingly, it is desirable to provide a pillow that allows for increased breathability, i.e., airflow through the outer layer, to limit or prevent an increase in temperature of the pillow.
- According to one aspect, there is provided a pillow. The pillow includes a cover layer defining an inner volume, the cover layer having a body portion and one or more mesh portions. The pillow further includes a filler material disposed in the inner volume. The inner volume is in fluid communication with external atmosphere via the one or more mesh portions.
- According to another aspect, there is provided a pillow cover. The pillow cover includes a cover layer defining an inner volume, the inner volume configured to receive a filler. The cover layer includes a body portion and one or more mesh portions. The inner volume is in fluid communication with external atmosphere via the one or more mesh portions.

Referring toFIGS. 1-3 , thepillow 10 has afirst side 12, asecond side 13 opposite to thefirst side 12, and aperipheral edge region 14 extending about a periphery of thepillow 10 at a boundary between thefirst side 12 andsecond side 13. In one embodiment, thefirst side 12 is a top side of thepillow 10 and thesecond side 13 is a bottom side. An interior volume is defined within thefirst side 12, thesecond side 13 and theperipheral edge region 14. - The
pillow 10 includes an outer orcover layer 16 defining the interior volume. Thecover layer 16 extends across thefirst side 12, thesecond side 13 and theperipheral edge region 14. In one embodiment, thecover layer 16 includes abody portion 18 and one ormore mesh portions 20. Thebody portion 18 may be constructed of one or more panels of material. For example, a single panel of material may extend substantially about the interior volume and may have opposing ends secured together, directly or indirectly. In another embodiment, thebody portion 18 may be constructed of multiple panels. For example, thebody portion 18 may be constructed of two panels that are secured to one another. In one embodiment, opposite edges of one panel may be secured to corresponding opposite edges of the other panel. It is understood that thebody portion 18 may include additional panels as well, and that the panels may be secured to another at non-edge areas of thepillow 10. The one or more panels may be secured to one another, for example, by stitching, buttons, snaps, a slide fastener, a hook and loop fastener and the like. - In addition, the one or more panels of the
body portion 18 may be formed having one or more plies of material. In one embodiment, thebody portion 18 may be quilted. That is, in one embodiment, thebody portion 18 may include, for example, two plies of material that are stitched together to form a plurality ofboxes 22 or interior spaces between the plies. Theboxes 22 may be filled with a cushioning material. The size, shape, volume and/or pattern of theboxes 22 may be varied. For example, as shown inFIG. 1 , in one embodiment, theboxes 22 may be formed in a large square or diamond pattern, while in another example, as shown inFIG. 2 , theboxes 22 may be formed in a small square or diamond pattern. The box patterns are defined by a stitching pattern in the plies of material. It is understood that other shapes or patterns may be formed in each panel by varying or changing the stitching pattern in the plies of material, and that the present disclosure in not limited to the square or diamond box patterns shown in the figures. In other embodiments, thebody portion 18 may be formed by one or more panels having only a single ply that is not quilted, or a combination of single ply, multiple ply, quilted and/or non-quilted sections. - With further reference to
FIGS. 1 and 2 , the one ormore mesh portions 20 include a plurality ofopenings 24. In one embodiment, theopenings 24 are of a predetermined size and shape and are positioned at predetermined positions along the one ormore mesh portions 20. In one embodiment, theopenings 24 are positioned at regular, consistently spaced intervals along the one ormore mesh portions 20. That is, equal spacing may exist between each opening 24 and the nearest adjacent opening oropenings 24. Theopenings 24 may all be similarly shaped and sized. Alternatively, the one ormore mesh portions 20 may be manufactured withopenings 24 having predetermined sizes and shapes that vary among one another. Accordingly, the one ormore mesh portions 20 are configured to allow an increased flow of air into and out of the interior volume, per unit area, than thebody portion 18. Thecover layer 16, including thebody portion 18 and the one ormore mesh portions 20 may be made from, for example, a fabric material, such as a knitted fabric, a sateen weave, or any flat weave fabric. In some embodiments, the one ormore mesh portions 20 may also, or alternatively, be made from nylon, polyester or another similar material. - The one or
more mesh portions 20 may be secured to thebody portion 18, for example, by stitching. In one embodiment, the one ormesh portions 20 may include two mesh portions. As shown inFIGS. 1 and 2 , themesh portions 20 may be positioned at opposite ends of thepillow 10 spaced apart by thebody portion 18. In one embodiment, themesh portions 20 may extend along a width direction ‘w’ of thepillow 10, and are spaced apart along a length direction ‘l’ of thepillow 10. However, it is understood that the present disclosure is not limited to this configuration, and that themesh portions 20 may also, for example, extend along the length direction ‘l’ of thepillow 10 and be spaced apart in the width direction ‘w’ of thepillow 10. - With further reference to
FIGS. 1 and 2 , the one ormore mesh portions 20 may include aproximate edge 26 that is inwardly curved, i.e., curved toward a center of thecover layer 16. In some embodiments, the inwardlycurved edge 26 may be secured directly to thebody portion 18, for example, by stitching. In addition, eachmesh portion 20 may extend to an outer,distal edge 28 that extends generally along a portion of theperipheral edge region 14 of thepillow 10. For example, in one embodiment, thedistal edges 28 may extend generally in the width direction ‘w’ at oppositeperipheral edge regions 14 of thepillow 10. Eachdistal side 28 may be curved inwardly toward a center of thebody portion 18. Alternatively, eachdistal side 28 may be substantially linear. In one embodiment, themesh portions 20, when viewed together, may be substantially hourglass shaped. That is, when viewed as a whole, themesh portions 20 may form a shape having a dimension at opposite ends that is greater than a dimension in the same direction at a point between the opposite ends. - It is understood that in other embodiments, the
cover layer 16 may includeadditional mesh portions 20, connected to one another, or discretely positioned, i.e., spaced apart, along thecover layer 16. The number, size, shape and position of themesh portions 20, and the number, size, shape, and position of theopenings 24 may be varied during manufacturing and assembly to provide different airflow characteristics between the interior volume and the external atmosphere outside of thecover layer 16. - The
body portion 18 may also include two opposed inwardlycurved edges 30, curved toward a center of thecover layer 16. In one embodiment, the opposed inwardlycurved sides 30 may extend generally in the length direction ‘l’, between thedistal edges 28, and be positioned along portions of theperipheral edge region 14 of thepillow 10. Accordingly, thepillow 10 may be substantially hourglass shaped along the length direction ‘l’. - The
cover layer 16 may be formed similarly on thefirst side 12 andsecond side 13 of thepillow 10. In one embodiment, themesh portions 20 extend from respectivecurved edges 26 on thefirst side 12 of thepillow 10 to respectivedistal edges 28 at theperipheral edge region 14, and around to a second curved edge (not shown) on thesecond side 13 of thepillow 10, such that thesecond side 13 of thepillow 10 is substantially identical to thefirst side 12 of thepillow 10. However, the present disclosure is not limited this configuration. For example, thesecond side 13 may be formed in its entirety as abody portion 18. That is, the one ormore mesh portions 20 may only be positioned on afirst side 12. - As best shown in
FIG. 3 , thepillow 10 further includes a padding orfiller material 32 disposed in the interior volume, i.e., with thecover layer 16. Thefiller material 32 may be, for example a fibrous or foam material. In one embodiment, thefiller material 32 may be a polyester fiber. - In the embodiments above, the
pillow 10 includes the one ormore mesh portions 20 havingopenings 24 formed therein to allow for increased airflow between the interior volume and the external atmosphere outside of thecover layer 16. In one embodiment, oppositedistal edges 28 of thepillow 10 are flared outwardly away from a center of thepillow 10. The flareddistal edges 28 of thepillow 10 serve to increase a surface area or profile of thepillow 10. Thus, by positioning themesh portions 20 at the opposite flarededges 28, a larger mesh area may be provided, which may allow for increased airflow into and out of the interior volume ofpillow 10. Increased airflow may serve to cool, or limit heat buildup in thepillow 10. - The
pillow 10 is shaped so that, in use, a person may rest or otherwise be supported at or near a center of the pillow. The inwardly curved edges 30 of thebody portion 18 may reduce, limit or prevent interference of the pillow with other portions of the person's body, such as the person's neck or shoulders. By positioning themesh portions 20 at opposite ends, themesh portions 20 may remain unobstructed by a person using the pillow, thereby allowing for unobstructed airflow through theopenings 24. - Further still, the
body portion 18, positioned between themesh portions 20, is configured for contact with the person. Thus, thebody portion 18 may be formed or constructed having, for example, different, cushioning, softness and stiffness characteristics than themesh portions 20. For example, as detailed above, thebody portion 18 may be quilted. Because sufficient airflow between the interior volume and the external atmosphere may be provided at the one ormore mesh portions 20, in some embodiments, thebody portion 18 may be made from materials or constructed in a way to enhance certain characteristics, including cushioning, softness and stiffness, that may restrict breathability through thebody portion 18. - Accordingly, in the embodiments above, the
cover layer 16 may be sufficiently breathable so as to limit or prevent increases in temperature that a user may consider uncomfortable. Moreover, thecover layer 16, including the one ormore mesh portions 20 may be ergonomically shaped. For example, thepillow 10 may include 26, 28 at the one orcurved edges more mesh portions 20, andcurved edges 30 at thebody portion 18. In addition, the one ormore mesh portions 20, in some embodiments, are positioned toward or at opposing edges of thecover layer 16, while thebody portion 18 extends between themesh portions 20. Accordingly, a user may rest, lie, or otherwise be supported on thebody portion 18, which may be quilted for increased comfort, without affecting or restricting airflow through the one ormore mesh portions 20. - Alternative configurations are envisioned as well. For example, the
pillow 10 may be formed in a substantially square or rectangular shape, as described in U.S. patent application Ser. No. 14/644,931, commonly owned and assigned with the instant application, and of which the instant application is a Continuation-In-Part (CIP). That is, in a plan view, theperipheral edge region 14 may be substantially square or rectangular in shape. - In other configurations, the one or
more mesh portions 20 may extend to theperipheral edge region 14 in the length direction ‘l,’ the width direction ‘w,’ or both. Alternatively, the one ormore mesh portions 20 may be spaced from theperipheral edge region 14. In some configurations, different mesh portions of the one ormore mesh portions 20 may be configured differently. For example, a first mesh portion or portions may extend to theperipheral edge region 14 while a second mesh portion or portions may be spaced from theperipheral edge region 14. In another example, a first mesh portion or portions may extend to theperipheral edge region 14 in the length direction ‘l’ while the second mesh portion or portions may extend to theperipheral edge 14 in the width direction ‘w.’ - Further, the
first side 12 andsecond side 13 may be joined directly together at theperipheral edge region 14 at a seam. That is, thepillow 10 may be formed without a gusset. The seam may extend completely around the periphery of thepillow 10.Mesh portions 20 may be formed one thefirst side 12 andsecond side 13 and may be connected to one another via the seam at theperipheral edge region 14. In other embodiments, a mesh portion of the one or more mesh portions may extend continuously across thefirst side 12,second side 13 and a portion of theperipheral edge region 14. - In yet another configuration, the
pillow 10 may include one ormore body portions 18 along with one ormore mesh portions 20. For example, asingle mesh portion 20 may be formed on one of or both of the 12, 13 of thesides pillow 10. Twobody portions 18 may also be formed on one of or both of 12, 13 with theside mesh portion 20 disposed therebetween. Alternatively, or in addition, the one ormore mesh portions 20 and one ormore body portions 18 may be alternately positioned across one of or both of the 12, 13.sides -
FIGS. 4-8 are plan views showing different embodiments of a pillow incorporating various features from the embodiments described above. In the following embodiments, further description of features that are identical or similar to those described above may be omitted. Further, in the following embodiments, features similar to those described above may be referred to with similar terminology and/or reference characters. - Referring to
FIG. 4 , apillow 110 may include amesh portion 120 extending to, and between, opposing peripheral edges in the length direction ‘l’ of theperipheral edge region 114. Themesh portion 120 may be disposed between discrete, spaced-apartbody portions 118 that extend to opposed edges of theperipheral edge region 114 spaced apart in the length direction ‘l’ and extend along the opposed edges of theperipheral edge region 114 in the width direction ‘w.’ Thebody portions 118 may also extend along a portion of edges spaced apart in the width direction ‘w.’ Alternatively, themesh portion 120 may extend to portions of edges of theperipheral edge region 114 spaced apart in the length direction ‘l.’ In one embodiment, thebody portions 118 may join themesh portion 120 generally along an arcuate path at respectiveproximal edges 126 of thebody portions 118. However, the present disclosure is not limited to this configuration, theproximal edges 126 may be joined to themesh portion 120 along a straight, angled, or wavy path, for example. In this configuration, external air may communicate, i.e., flow into and out of a central region of thepillow 110 through themesh portion 120. -
FIG. 5 is a plan view showing another embodiment of apillow 210. Referring toFIG. 5 , thepillow 210 may include discrete, spaced apart meshportions 220 separated by abody portion 218. In one embodiment, themesh portions 220 may be substantially rectangular in shape and extend along theperipheral edge region 214 at opposing edges spaced apart in the length direction ‘l.’ Themesh portions 220 may also extend between portions of opposing edges of theperipheral edge region 214 spaced apart in the width direction ‘w.’ Thus, eachmesh portion 220 may extend along theperipheral edge region 214 in the width direction ‘w’ and a portion of the length direction ‘l.’ It is understood thatmesh portions 220 are not limited to the rectangular shape described in this embodiment, and other suitable shapes incorporating curved, angled or wavy portions, for example, are envisioned. -
FIG. 6 is a plan view showing another embodiment of apillow 310. Referring toFIG. 6 , thepillow 310 may include spaced apart,discrete mesh portions 320. In one embodiment, themesh portions 320 extend between and to opposing edges of theperipheral edge region 314 in the width direction ‘w.’ In addition, themesh portions 320 may be spaced from opposing edges of theperipheral edge region 314 in the length direction ‘l.’ In an alternate configuration, themesh portions 320 may be spaced from the edges of the peripheral edge region spaced apart in the width direction ‘w.’ Accordingly, in this embodiment, themesh portions 320 and thebody portions 318 may be alternately positioned. It is understood that additional orfewer mesh portions 320 andbody portions 318 may be included on thepillow 310. -
FIG. 7 is a plan view another embodiment of apillow 410. Referring toFIG. 7 , thepillow 410 may include four spaced apart,discrete mesh portions 420. It is understood, however, that additional orfewer mesh portions 420 may be included. In one embodiment, eachmesh portion 420 extends along a portion of an edge of theperipheral edge region 414 in the length direction ‘l.’ Themesh portions 420 may be spaced apart by thebody portion 418 in the length ‘l’ and width ‘w’ directions. Alternately, themesh portions 420 may extend along edge portions in the width direction ‘w.’ In another embodiment,mesh portions 420 may extend along portions of edges in either or both of the length ‘l’ and width ‘w’ directions. Further, in one embodiment, themesh portions 420 may be substantially square in shape. However, other shapes are envisioned. For example, themesh portions 420 may be substantially rectangular, circular, semi-circular, elliptical, semi-elliptical, or triangular in shape. -
FIG. 8 is a plan view of another embodiment of apillow 510. Referring toFIG. 8 , amesh portion 520 may extend along a plurality of edges of theperipheral edge region 514. Abody portion 518 may extend along at least a portion of one or more edges of theperipheral edge region 514. In one embodiment, thebody portion 518 may extend along a portion of an edge in the length direction ‘l.’ Themesh portion 520 may substantially surround thebody portion 518. In one embodiment, thebody portion 518 may have a generally bulbous shape. However, other shapes, such as semi-circular or oval, square or rectangular are envisioned as well. - It is understood that the features of the various embodiments described above may be combined or used together with features of different embodiments above. Thus, the present disclosure is not limited only to the embodiments expressly described above and shown in the drawings. Additionally, in the embodiments above, the one or more mesh portions and one or more body portions may be formed on the first side or the second side or the first side and the second side of the pillow. In some embodiments, the one or more mesh portions and one or more body portions may be identically formed on each side of pillow. In other embodiments, the one or more mesh portions and the one or more body portions may be formed differently from one another. For example, the one or more mesh portions may be located at different positions on each side of the pillow or be formed having different shapes on each side. Further, the one or more mesh portions and/or the one or more body portions may be asymmetrically shaped or positioned. Further still, in the embodiments above, the positioning of one or more mesh portions and the one or more body portions may be interchanged. The positioning of the one or more mesh portions and the one or more body portions with respect to the length ‘l’ and width ‘w’ directions may also be interchanged. For example, where one feature is described in relation to the width direction ‘w,’ that feature, in another embodiment, may be configured similarly in relation to the length direction ‘l,’ and vice versa. That is, referring for example to the embodiment of
FIG. 1 , the mesh portion can be positioned at the top or bottom or top and bottom of the pillow rather than on the left and right-hand sides, as illustrated. - It should also be understood that various changes and modifications to the presently disclosed embodiments will be apparent to those skilled in the art. Such changes and modifications can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the present disclosure and without diminishing its intended advantages. It is therefore intended that such changes and modifications be covered by the appended claims.
Claims (18)
1. A pillow comprising:
a cover layer defining an interior volume, the cover layer having a top side, a bottom side, an outer periphery extending along a boundary of the top side and the bottom side, one or more body portions and one or more mesh portions; and
a filler material disposed in the interior volume,
wherein the interior volume is in fluid communication with external atmosphere via the one or more mesh portions.
2. The pillow of claim 1 , wherein the one or more mesh portions includes a single mesh portion positioned between spaced apart body portions, the body portions extending to opposed edges of the outer periphery.
3. The pillow of claim 1 , wherein the one or more body portions includes a single body portion positioned between spaced apart mesh portions, the mesh portions extending to opposed edges of the outer periphery.
4. The pillow of claim 3 , wherein the mesh portions are substantially rectangular shaped.
5. The pillow of claim 1 , wherein the one or more mesh portions includes a plurality of mesh portions and the one or more body portions includes a plurality of body portions, the mesh portions being alternately positioned between the body portions.
6. The pillow of claim 5 , wherein the each mesh portion and each body portion extends completely across the cover layer to opposed edges of the outer periphery.
7. The pillow of claim 1 , wherein the one or more mesh portions includes a plurality of spaced apart mesh portions extending along portions of one or more edges of the outer periphery.
8. The pillow of claim 1 , wherein the one or more mesh portions includes a single mesh portion and the one or more body portions includes a single body portion, wherein the mesh portion substantially surrounds the body portion.
9. The pillow of claim 8 , wherein the body portion extends along at least a portion of an edge of the outer periphery, and the mesh portion extends along a plurality of edges of the outer periphery.
10. The pillow of claim 9 , wherein the body portion is substantially bulbous shaped.
11. The pillow of claim 1 , wherein the one or more mesh portions and the one or more body portions are identically formed on the top side and the bottom side.
12. The pillow of claim 1 , wherein the one or more mesh portions and the one or more body portions are differently formed on the top side and the bottom side.
13. The pillow of claim 1 , wherein the body portion is made from a quilted fabric.
14. The pillow of claim 1 , wherein the body portion is made from a knitted fabric, sateen weave or flat weave fabric.
15. The pillow of claim 1 , wherein the filler material is polyester.
16. A pillow cover comprising:
a cover layer defining an interior volume, the cover layer having a top side, a bottom side, an outer periphery extending along a boundary of the top side and the bottom side, one or more body portions and one or more mesh portions; and
a filler material disposed in the interior volume,
wherein the interior volume is in fluid communication with external atmosphere via the one or more mesh portions.
17. The pillow cover of claim 16 , wherein the one or more body portions are made from a quilted fabric.
18. The pillow cover of claim 16 , wherein the one or more body portions are made from a knitted fabric, sateen weave or flat weave fabric.
