ATTORNEYS Patented Oct. 1, 1935 PATENT OFFICE FILLER UNIT Elmer Edward Koenig, Garfield Heights,l and George McKim Mills, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, assignors to The Mills Company, Cleveland, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Applieationrebruary s, 1932, serial No. 591,673
14V Claims.
'This invention relates to-partition structures and more particularly to a wall filler unit' adapted to be used for filling in the space between the free edge of a run of partition sections and ,5 a wall.
Metal partition structures are now generally constructed and assembled in standard size units, each unit being of the same width. When a run of standard sectional units are erected, therefore, a space between the free edge of the last unit and the wall results,` which space is of less Width than the standardwidth of the unit. Some means must be provided to continue the partition run to the wall or other point desired.`
An object of our inventionis to provide a wall filler adapted `to `be inserted between the free edge of the last unit 'erectedland the end of the partition run. A
Another object of our inventionis to provide` an adjustable wall ller which may be conveniently and easily adjusted to ll in 'any space leftA between the free edge of the last unit erected and theend `of the partition run and which `may also form a part of Ya partition post.'
A furtherobject of our invention is to provide an adjustable wall filler section which is attractive in design', easily constructed ,and erected and harmonizes with the several units of the partition.
Our invention also consists in forming aproduct having the general characteristics, the new and useful applications, and the several original features of utility hereinafter' set `forth and claimed.
Although the novelfeatures which are believed to be characteristic of this` invention will be particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto, the invention itself, as to its objects and advantages, and the manner in which it may be carried out, may be better understood by referring to the following description taken in connection withthe accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, in which Fig. 1 is `a horizontal cross sectional view through the free end post of a standard partition unit and our novel wall ller shown in combination therewith; i I
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front View of the partition post and our wallflller, certain parts being broken away to more clearly show the interior construction; and Y Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one section of our adjustable wall ller. l I 4 Like reference charactersdenote like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In theifollowing description andin the claims (Cl. 18S-34) various details will be identified by specific names for convenience, but they are intended to be as generic in their application'as the art willpermit.
We have shown in Fig. 1, our adjustable wall filler positioned between the free edge of a sectional unit and a wall I0 which may be the end of` a partition run. While our adjustable `wa1l` ller may be inserted between the free edge of any sectional unit or post and the end of the partition run, one section I I of our wall filler may be used in combination with a partition upright I2 to form a partition post as shown in Figure l. Upright I 2 forms a part of a sectional partition unit and is recessed at I3 to receive the panel I4 of the sectional unit. Section II'is generally of channel form and is provided with side lianges I5 of considerable width which extend away from the sectional unit. f
The unit upright I2 and the wall filler section II are connected together by a spacer and clips to form a sturdy post. The spacer comprises a central connecting portion I6 and lateral extensions I'! projecting from each of the'four corners thereof. The unit upright I2 is provided with inwardly projecting flanges I8 with which one pair of the projecting portions I'I of the spacer engage. An opening I9 is cut in the web portion 20 of the channel section I I soas to provide flange portions 2| along the sides of the opening. Thel opening IS `is of such size that by proper manipulation one end of the spacercan be inserted therethrough. Projecting portions I1 then seat interiorly against the flanges 2l, thus connecting the upright I2 and section II and maintaining them a uniform distance apart.
Clips are provided which seat against the upright I2 and section II to hold them in rigid assembly. Each clip comprises generally a connecting portion 22and outwardly rebent iiange portions 23 at each end of the connecting portion. The clip may also be provided with side anges 24 to give rigidity and strength to the same. The rebent flanges 23 of eachV clip are so shaped as to seat against a corner 25 of the uprightV I2 and a corner 26 of the section I I to firmly lock the same against the projecting portions' Il of the spacer, as clearly shown in Fig. l. A screw bolt 2l provided with a nut 28 at one end thereof, extends through the connecting portion 22 of each clip.
When the nut 28 is drawn tight either by manip-V ulating the nut or the head1 of the bolt the clips are drawn toward the spacer" so that the whole forms a truss with the upright I2 and section I I', clamping and locking the entireassembly ntogether to form a sturdy post. 'The spacer may be provided, if desired, with laterally extending stiiening flanges 29 through which the bolt 21 extends. Openings or holes 30 may be provided in the spacer through which electric wiring or other conduits may be threaded. A cap pilaster 3l is provided which snaps on to the sides of the assembled posts and resiliently engages the rebent anges 23 of the clips, as shown in Fig.' l.
' The second wall filler section 32 is generally of depth desired and generally speaking the greater theA depth of the sleeve the greater the adjustability of the wall iiller. Shoulder portions 38,
' formed by doubling back portions 35, present a smooth and iinished exterior appearance. A screw 39 or other means may be provided to properly secure the web portion 33 of the filler member to the building wall I0.
' It is now seen that we have provided a ller unit formed Yfrom two telescoping channel shaped sections, whichV sections are adjustable to fill in the space between the free edge of a partition unit and the end of the partition run. The wall filler is so constructed that one of the channel Y sections forming a part thereof also forms a part of the sectional partition post, thus serving two purposes and permitting economy in m-aterial and workmanship. Our adjustable wall iiller presents a neat and smooth exterior appearance, is free from rough edges and harmonizes well with practically any form of sectional partition construction.A OurV wall filler when erected as above described is fully equal in strength to any other portion of the completed partition. It also possesses the further advantage of being simple inV construction, economical to manufacture and does not require skilled labor for erection and assembly.
While certain novel features of the invention have been disclosed and are pointed out in the annexed claims, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes may be made by those skilled in the art without depart-` ing from the spirit of the invention.
