Abstract
Disclosed herein are adapters for use with a wearable carrying case, and methods of making and using such adapters. Some embodiments relate to an adapter configured for use with a wearable carrying case that may include a loop, such as belt loop. The adapter may include support structure for attachment to a portion of the carrying case, such as a loop of the carrying case, and clip structure allowing for selective attachment to another structure, for example, to an article of clothing of a user. The support structure may define a first channel extending along a first central axis that is configured to accept a portion of the carrying case, such as a loop of the carrying case, and the clip structure may define a second channel extending along a second central axis offset from the first central axis. The clip structure and/or the second channel may be configured to accept or attach to another structure, such as an article of clothing of a user.
Description
- This application claims priority under 35 U.S.C. §119 to U.S. Provisional Application Ser. No. 61/923,348, filed Jan. 3, 2014, the entire disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference.
- The present disclosure pertains to adapters and/or attachments to wearable carrying cases, and methods for using and manufacturing the same. More particularly, the present disclosure pertains to an adapter for attachment to a loop, such as a belt loop, of a wearable carrying case, and methods for manufacturing and using such devices.
- Wearable carrying cases, such as holster, sheaths, scabbards, and the like, for various weapons, tools, electronic devices, or the like, are generally known. One common mechanism of wearing a wearable carrying case is to incorporate a belt loop as a part of the carrying case. A user's belt is passed through the belt loop such that the carrying case can be suspended from or hangs from the belt of the user.
- However, in such configurations, each time the user wishes to remove and/or reattach the carrying case to the belt, the belt needs to be unbuckled and at least partially removed. This can be clumsy and time consuming, especially in situations where it is desirable to attach and remove the carrying case quickly and/or many times over a short period. Furthermore, there may be a situation where a user wants to wear the carrying case, but is not wearing a belt and/or does not wish to wear the carrying case on a belt. In such circumstances, the belt loop on the carrying case can prove to be insufficient.
- This disclosure relates to an adapter for use with a wearable carrying case, and design, material, manufacturing method, and use alternatives for such an adapter. Some example embodiments relate to an adapter that may be used with a wearable carrying case that may include a loop, such as belt loop. The adapter may include structure for attachment to a portion of the carrying case, for example, to a loop of the carrying case, and further include structure allowing for selective attachment to another structure, for example, to an article of clothing of a user. Some example adapters may provide a mechanism by which a wearable carrying case that includes a loop, such as a belt loop, may be adapted to include a clip structure that may be used to secure the carrying case to a user or another object as desired.
- For example, some embodiments provide an adapter including a support structure defining a first channel extending along a first central axis, the support structure being configured to accept a portion of a carrying case, for example a loop of the carrying case, within the first channel. The adapter may also include a clip structure defining a second channel extending along a second central axis offset from the first central axis. The clip structure and/or the channel defined by the clip structure may be configured to accept or attach to another structure, such as an article of clothing of a user.
- In some embodiments, the support structure includes a first support and a second support defining a first channel extending between a first opening and a second opening opposite the first opening. The first channel includes a first central axis extending from a center of the first opening to a center of the second opening. Further, the clip structure may include an elongate member defining a second channel extending between a third opening and a fourth opening opposite the third opening. The second channel may include a second central axis extending from the center of the third opening to the center of the fourth opening. The second axis may be angularly offset from the first axis. In some cases, the second central axis is offset from the first central axis at an angle that is in the range of about 45° to about 135°, or at an angle in the range of about 30° to about 120°, or in some cases, at an angle that is generally perpendicular to the first axis.
- In some cases, the adapter may include a support structure defining a first opening extending along a first plane, a second opening opposite the first opening extending along a second plane, and a first channel extending from the first opening to the second opening. Further, the adapter may include a clip structure defining a third opening extending along a third plane, a fourth opening opposite the third opening extending along a fourth plane, and a second channel extending between the third opening and the fourth opening. In some cases, the one or both of the first plane and the second plane is not parallel with one or both of the third plane and the fourth plane. In some cases, one or both of the first plane and the second plane is angularly offset from one or both of the third plane and the fourth plane by an angle that is in the range of about 45° to about 135°, or in the range of about 30° to about 120°. In some cases, one or both of the first plane and the second plane is generally perpendicular to one or both of the third plane and the fourth plane.
- Some embodiments relate to a method for adapting a carrying case including a loop, such methods including attaching any of the embodiments of an adapter as described herein to the loop of the carrying case. Further, some embodiments relate to a method of carrying a carrying case including a loop, and include disposing the loop of the carrying case into the first channel defined by the support structure of any of the adapters described herein, and attaching the clip structure of any of the adapter described herein to an article of clothing worn by a user.

FIGS. 1 , 2, and 3 show various perspective views of an example embodiment of anadapter 10. Theadapter 10 includes asupport structure 14 defining a first passage orchannel 22 extending along a first central axis Y, and aclip structure 18 defining a second passage orchannel 26 extending along a second central axis X offset from the first central axis Y. Thesupport structure 14 may be capable of or configured to accept a portion of a carrying case, for example a loop of a carrying case, such as a belt loop of a carrying case, within thechannel 22, to selectively attach theadapter 10 to a carrying case. Theclip structure 18 may be capable of or configured to accept at least a portion of another structure within thesecond channel 26, to selectively secure theadapter 10 to another structure, such as an article of clothing of a user. support structure 14 includes a firstelongated support 60 and a secondelongated support 64. The first and second 60 and 64 may define theelongated supports first channel 22. For example, at least a portion of the 60 and 64 may be spaced from one another along at least a portion of their lengths, thereby defining thesupports channel 22. The supports 60 and 64 may be attached together at a first end thereby defining aclosed end portion 68. The supports 60 and 64 may remain spaced from each other at a second end portion, thereby defining anopen end 69 opposite that of theclosed end 68. - The
support structure 14 alone or in combination with theclip structure 18 may define a first, orlower surface 70 defining a first, or lower, opening 71 (FIG. 1 ), and a second, orupper surface 66 defining a second, or upper opening 67 (FIG. 2 ). Thechannel 22 may extend along a central axis Y between thefirst opening 71 and thesecond opening 67. Thechannel 22 therefore defines a passage between the 71 and 67 through which, for example, a loop of a carrying case may extend. The central axis Y may extend through the center of both of theopenings 71 and 67. For example, theopenings first opening 71 will include a center and/or define a central point of theopening 71. Likewise, thesecond opening 67 will include a center and/or define a central point of theopening 67. The central axis Y of thefirst channel 22 may extend through the center and/or central point of both the first and 71 and 67.second openings - It should be noted that each of the
71 and 67 will include a center and/or define a central point regardless of the size, shape, or orientation of theopenings 71 and 67. For example, in the embodiment shown, theopenings 71 and 67 are by and large the same size and shape, being generally elongated with a length that is greater than a width. Also, theopenings 71 and 67 are shown as extending in planes that are generally parallel to one another. As can be appreciated, the centers of each of theopenings 71 and 67 may be defined taking these characteristics into account, and the central axis Y may extend through the center of bothopenings 71 and 67. However, in other embodiments, the size, shape, and planar orientation of theopenings 71 and 67 may vary from those shown, and may be the same or different from one another. Regardless of these variances or differences, each of the openings will include a center, and the central axis Y may extend through the center of bothopenings 71 and 67.openings - As suggested above, the cross-sectional size and/or shape and/or planar orientation of the
71 and 67 and/or of theopenings channel 22 defined by thesupport structure 14 may vary. In the embodiment illustrated, the 71 and 67 and correspondingopenings channel 22 are shown as generally rectangular in shape, for example, to accommodate the generally rectangular cross-sectional shape of traditional belt loop that may be on a carrying case. However, a broad variety of other shapes are contemplated for the 71 and 67 and correspondingopenings channel 22. For example, the shape of the 71 and 67 and correspondingopenings channel 22 may be generally square, triangular, or any or a broad variety or other polygon shapes, or may define a generally oval, circular, oblong, c-shaped, or other curved shape as desired. The shape and size of the of the 71 and 67 and correspondingopenings channel 22 may be chosen and/or designed to accommodate the shape and/or size of a loop of a carrying case that is intended to fit within and/or through the 71 and 67 and correspondingopenings channel 22. Additionally, the shape, size, or planar orientation of 71 and 67 and correspondingopenings channel 22 within thesame adapter 10 may vary from one another, as desired. - A wide variety of shapes or sizes are contemplated for the
support structure 14, often influenced by the desired form and function of the particular adapter and/or the type of carrying case to which it is intended to be attached. For example, in the embodiment shown, theclosed end portion 68 is curved and the 60 and 64 are generally straight, such that thesupports support structure 14 is a generally u-shaped structure without any sharp corners or edges along theouter surface 15 of thesupport structure 14. This may provide a smooth outer surface that is less likely to undesirably catch on clothing, other structures, or the user. However, other shapes and configurations are contemplated; for example, those that may include sharp corners or edges along the outer or inner surface, or may include various curves or corners along thesupport structure 14. Additionally, the size of thesupport structure 14 may be configured as desired to accommodate and/or support a particular type or class of carrying case. For example, if theadapter 10 is intended for use with a carrying case for a large bodied or heavy sidearm, thesupport structure 14 may be larger in stature. On the other hand, if theadapter 10 is intended for use with a carrying case for a small electronic device or knife, thesupport structure 14 may be smaller in stature. Some examples of carrying cases that are contemplated with which the adapted may be used include holster, sheaths, scabbards, or the like, for various weapons, such as guns, knives, swords or the like; tools, such as hammers, hatchets, machetes, screwdrivers, chisels, awls or the like; electronic devices, such as phones, Ipods, MP3 players, or the like. It should be understood, however, that such an adapter may be used with any of a wide variety of other carrying cases and/or devices, and is not necessarily limited to any devices particularly listed above. - By way of example, in some embodiments, the
support structure 14 may include one or more of the following dimensions. A width, for example along one or both of the 60 and 64 from a point along thesupports lower surface 70 to a point along theupper surface 66, may be in the range of about 0.5 cm to about 8 cm, or in some cases, in the range of about 2 cm to about 6 cm. A length, for example along one or both of the 60 and 64 from a point at the firstsupports closed end 68 to the opposingopen end 69 that may be in the range of about 5 cm to about 15 cm, or in some cases in the range of about 8 to about 12 cm. The supports 60 and 64 may have a wall thickness in the range of about 0.1 to about 1 cm, or in some cases in the range of about 0.1 to about 0.5 cm. Thechannel 22 may have a width extending between the 60 and 64 that may be in the range of about 0.1 to about 3 cm, or in some cases, in the range of about 0.25 to about 1.5 cm. Thesupports channel 22 may have a length that generally corresponds to the length of the 60 and 64, as given above. These dimensions are given by way of example only, as a broad variety of other dimensions may be used as desired. The particular dimensions used may often be dependent on the intended use of thesupports adapter 10 and/or the material used to construct theadapter 10. - The
adapter 10 may further include a restrainingmechanism 72, for example, to selectively restrain and/or maintain a structure, such as a belt loop of a carrying case, within thefirst channel 22. The restrainingmechanism 72 may be used for selectively closing or selectively partially closing a portion of thechannel 22. In the embodiment shown, the restraining mechanism includes a threadedbolt 74, and one or more threaded 76 a, 76 b, 76 c defined in one or both of the elongated supports 60 and 64. The threaded bolt may be selectively disposed within one or a pair of openings and configured to extend across or partially across theopenings channel 22 to selectively block and/or act as a stop to maintain a structure, such as the loop of a carrying case, that may be disposed in thefirst channel 22. For a degree of adjustability, for example to allow the adapter to be configured to accommodate different size belt loops, a series of 76 a, 76 b, 76 c may be spaced apart laterally along theopenings support structure 14. For example, to accommodate a better fit for a wider belt loop, theopenings 76 a may be used, but to accommodate a better fit for a narrower belt loop,openings 76 c may be used. Other restraining mechanisms are also contemplated. Some examples of other restraining mechanisms or structures include: a protrusion, for example, similar to theprotrusion 46 discussed below regarding theclip structure 18; a clasp; a tie; a pin; a clip; a toggle; a buckle; a button; a catch; a press-fastener; a press-stud; a hook and eye; a snap; or the like. - As indicated above, the
adapter 10 may also include aclip structure 18. Theclip structure 18 includes one or more structural members that at least partially define thesecond channel 26. In the embodiment shown inFIGS. 1 , 2, and 3, theclip structure 18 includes anelongate member 30 that is attached to thesupport structure 14, and theelongate member 30 defines thechannel 26 between theelongate member 30 and thesupport structure 14. In the particular configuration shown, theelongate member 30 includes afirst end 42 that is attached to the firstelongated support 60, thereby defining a first closed end or stop 44. Theclosed end 44 may be generally curved in shape as shown, or may take other shapes as desired. At least a portion of theelongate member 30 and a portion of thesupport structure 14 are spaced from one another, thereby defining thechannel 26 there between, and may define anopen end 43 opposite that of theclosed end 44. - Alternative or additional structures or configurations for the
clip structure 18 are also contemplated. For example, in some contemplated embodiments, theclip structure 18 may include a hinge or hinge-like structure that may provide for widening or narrowing or opening or closing of thechannel 26, as desired. For example, the firstclosed end 44 may include a hinge or hinge-like structure that may allow for hinged or pivotal movement of theelongate member 30 relative to thesupport structure 14. Alternatively, or additionally, theclip structure 18 may include or be made of a spring or spring material to allow for some closing force of theclip structure 18 when it is attached to some other structure. - The
elongate member 30 may include a first ortop portion 34 and optionally a second orbottom portion 38. Thetop portion 34 may overlap with or overlie thesupport structure 14 and extend from theclosed end 42 to theopen end 43. As such, thefirst portion 34 and thesupport structure 14 may define thefirst end 42, thechannel 26, and theopen end 43. Thebottom portion 38 may extend beyond and not overlap with or overlie thesupport structure 14. For example, thebottom portion 38 may extend from the end of thefirst portion 34 adjacent theopen end 43, to asecond end 51. Thesecond portion 38 may be useful in aiding a user in attaching theclip structure 14 to another structure, such as an article of clothing. For example, thesecond portion 38 may act as a guide in guiding another structure, such as an article of clothing, into thechannel 26 defined by theclip structure 18. Additionally, or alternatively, thesecond portion 38 may act as a stabilizer to aid in providing stability to theadapter 10 when clipped to another structure, such as an article of clothing of a user. - The
clip structure 18 may also include one ormore securement mechanism 46 that may aid and/or be used for selectively restraining and/or maintaining a structure, such as an article of clothing, within thesecond channel 26. For example, theclip structure 18 may include one or more protrusions extending from a surface thereof. In the embodiment shown, theclip structure 18 includes aprotrusion 46 extending from aninner surface 50 of thesecond portion 38 of theelongated member 30. Theprotrusion 46 may be disposed near theopen end 43 of thechannel 26, and may act as a stop and/or may aid in maintaining another structure, such as an article of clothing, within thechannel 26. In the embodiment shown, theprotrusion 46 is ramp-like in shape, including alower surface 47 facing generally away from theopen end 43 of thechannel 26, and anupper surface 49 facing toward theopen end 43 of thechannel 26. Thelower surface 47 may be ramped or angled relative to theinner surface 50 of theelongate member 30, while theupper surface 49 may be generally flat, or perpendicular relative to theinner surface 50 of theelongate member 30. The rampedsurface 47 may facilitate another structure, such as an article of clothing, to pass by the protrusion into thechannel 26, while theupper surface 49 may act as a stop and/or facilitate maintaining another structure, such as an article of clothing, within thechannel 26. In addition or alternatively, the alower surface 47 may be flat or theupper surface 49 may be ramped or angled relative to theinner surface 50, or any combination thereof. Other configurations for the one or more such protrusions are also contemplated. For example: one or more additional protrusions may be included; the protrusion may be located elsewhere on theclip structure 18, such as on theupper portion 34 of the elongate member; the size, shape, or orientation of the protrusion may vary from that shown, including the size, shape and orientation of the upper and lower surfaces; and/or other modifications as desired. Additionally, other securement mechanisms are also contemplated as alternatives or additions to that shown. Some examples of other restraining mechanisms or structures that may be used may include: a threaded bolt, for example, similar to the threaded bolt restraining mechanism discussed above regarding thesupport structure 14; a clasp; a tie; a pin; a clip; a toggle; a buckle; a button; a catch; a press-fastener; a press-stud; a hook and eye; a snap; or the like. Furthermore, as described above, theclip structure 18 may include a hinge and/or may include a spring and/or include or be made of a spring or resilient material that may also be part of the securement mechanism or otherwise aid in selectively restraining and/or maintaining a structure, such as an article of clothing, within thesecond channel 26. - The
clip structure 18 alone, or in combination with thesupport structure 14 may include or define afirst side surface 31 defining a third opening 32 (FIGS. 1 and 2 ), and asecond side surface 33 defining a fourth opening 36 (FIG. 3 ). Thechannel 26 may extend along a central axis X between thethird opening 32 and thefourth opening 36, and the central axis X may extend through the center of both of the 32 and 36. For example, theopenings third opening 32 will include a center and/or define a central point of theopening 32. Likewise, thefourth opening 36 will include a center and/or define a central point of theopening 36. The central axis X of thechannel 26 may extend through the center and/or central point of both the third and 32 and 36.fourth openings - Again, similar to that discussed above regarding
71 and 67, each of theopenings 32 and 36 will include a center and/or define a central point regardless of the size, shape, or orientation of theopenings 32 and 36. For example, in the embodiment shown, theopenings 32 and 36 are generally the same size and shape, being elongated with a length that is generally greater than a width. Also, theopenings 32 and 36 are shown as extending in planes that are generally parallel to one another. As can be appreciated, the centers of theopenings 32 and 36 may be defined taking these characteristics into account, and the central axis X may extend through the center of bothopenings 32 and 36. However, in other embodiments, the size, shape, and planar orientation of theopenings 32 and 36 may vary from those shown, and may be the same or different from one another. Regardless of these variances or differences, each of the openings will include a center, and the central axis X may extend through the center of bothopenings 32 and 36.openings - As suggested above, the cross-sectional size and/or shape and/or planar orientation of the
32 and 36 and/or of theopenings channel 26 defined by the clip structure 16 may vary from that shown. In the embodiment illustrated, the 32 and 36 and correspondingopenings channel 26 are shown as generally rectangular in shape, for example, to accommodate the generally rectangular cross-sectional shape of traditional belt. However, a broad variety of other shapes are contemplated for the 32 and 36 and correspondingopenings channel 26. For example, the shape of the 32 and 36 and correspondingopenings channel 26 may be generally square, triangular, or any or a broad variety or other polygon shapes, or may define a generally oval, circular, oblong, c-shaped, or other curved shape as desired. The shape and size of the of the 32 and 36 and correspondingopenings channel 26 may be chosen and/or designed to accommodate the shape and/or size of a structure, such as a belt or other article of clothing that is intended to fit within and/or through the 32 and 36 and correspondingopenings channel 26. Additionally, the shape, size, or planar orientation of 32 and 36 and correspondingopenings channel 26 within thesame adapter 10 may vary from one another, as desired. - A wide variety of shapes or sizes are contemplated for the
clip structure 18, often influenced by the desired form and function of the particular adapter and/or the carrying case to which it is intended to be attached. For example, in the embodiment shown, theclosed end portion 42 is curved such that the resultingclip structure 18, alone or in combination with thesupport structure 14, forms a generally u-shaped structure without any sharp corners or edges along theouter surface 53 of theclip structure 18 and/orclosed end portion 42. This may provide a smooth outer surface that is less likely to undesirably catch on clothing, other structures, or the user. However, other shapes and configurations are contemplated; for example, those that may include sharp corners or edges along the outer surface, or may include various curves or corners along theclip structure 18 and/or the clip structure including a hinge or spring like structure. - Additionally, the size of the
clip structure 18 may be configured as desired to support a particular carrying case and/or for attachment to a particular structure or article of clothing. For example, if theadapter 10 is intended for use with a carrying case for a larger or heavier object, theclip structure 18 may be larger in stature. On the other hand, if theadapter 10 is intended for use with a carrying case for a smaller or lighter object, theclip structure 18 may be smaller in stature. Similarly, if theadapter 10 is intended for attachment to a larger structure or article of clothing, such as a large or wide belt, theclip structure 18 may be larger and/or define alarger channel 26. - By way of example, in some embodiments, the
clip structure 18 may include one or more of the following dimensions: The width, for example from thefirst side surface 31 to thesecond surface 33, may be in the range of about 1 cm to about 10 cm, or in some cases, in the range of about 2 cm to about 6 cm. The length of theelongated member 30, for example from the firstclosed end 42 to thesecond end 51, may be in the range of about 2 cm to about 15 cm, or in some cases in the range of about 6 cm to about 12 cm. The length of thefirst portion 34 of theelongated member 30, for example from the firstclosed end 42 to adjacent theopen end 43, may be in the range of about 1 cm to about 10 cm, or in some cases in the range of about 2 cm to about 7 cm. In an embodiment, the length of thesecond portion 38 of theelongated member 30, for example from adjacent theopen end 43 to thesecond end 51, may be in the range of about 1 cm to about 10 cm, or in some cases in the range of about 2 cm to about 7 cm. Theelongated member 30 may have a wall thickness in the range of about 0.1 to about 1 cm, or in some cases in the range of about 0.1 to about 0.5 cm. Thechannel 26 may have a width, for example, extending between theelongate member 30 and thesupport 60 that may be in the range of about 0.1 to about 3 cm, or in some cases, in the range of about 0.25 to about 1.5 cm. Thechannel 26 may have a length that generally corresponds to the length of thefirst portion 34 of theelongate member 30, as given above. These dimensions are given by way of example only, as a broad variety of other dimensions may be used as desired. The particular dimensions used may often be dependent on the intended use of theadapter 10 and/or the material used to construct theadapter 10. - The central axis Y of the
first channel 22 may be offset from the central axis X of thesecond channel 26. As such, axis Y is not parallel with the axis X. In some embodiments, the axis X is offset from the axis Y such that the axis X extends at an angle θ that is in the range of about 45° to about 135° degrees relative to the axis Y. In some embodiments, the axis X is offset from the axis Y such that the axis X extends at an angle θ that is in the range of about 30° to about 120° degrees relative to the axis Y. In some particular embodiments, the axis X is offset from the axis Y such that the axis X extends at an angle θ that is generally perpendicular to the axis Y. - Additionally and/or alternatively, in at least some embodiments, at least one of the
67 and 71 defined by theopenings support structure 14 extends in a plane that is angularly offset from a plane defined by one or both of the 32 and 36 defined by theopenings clip structure 18. As such, the plane defined by at least one of the 67 and 71 defined by theopenings support structure 14 is not parallel with a plane defined by one or both of the 32 and 36 defined by theopenings clip structure 18. In some embodiments, the plane defined by at least one of the 67 and 71 is offset from a plane defined by one or both of theopenings 32 and 36 by an angle that is in the range of about 45° to about 135°. In some embodiments, the plane defined by at least one of theopenings 67 and 71 is offset from a plane defined by one or both of theopenings 32 and 36 by an angle that is in the range of about 30° to about 120°. In some particular embodiments, the plane defined by at least one of theopenings 67 and 71 is offset from a plane defined by one or both of theopenings 32 and 36 at an angle that is generally perpendicular.openings - Referring now to
FIG. 4 , theadapter 10 is shown secured to abelt loop 84 of a carrying case 80 (e.g. holster) for a sidearm, and further secured to abelt 88 of a user. Thebelt loop 84 of the carryingcase 80 is disposed through thechannel 22 defined by thesupport structure 14 to selectively secure theadapter 10 to the carryingcase 80. Further, thebelt 88 is disposed through thechannel 26 defined by theclip structure 18 to selectively secure theadapter 10 to thebelt 88. The restrainingmechanism 72 of thesupport structure 14 is shown engaged to selectively restrain and/or maintain thebelt loop 84 within thefirst channel 22. Further, thesecurement mechanism 46 may 46 may aid to maintain the belt within thechannel 26. For example, theupper surface 49 of theprotrusion 46 may act as a stop and/or may aid in maintaining thebelt 88 within thechannel 26. - While this particular example shows an
adapter 10 being secured to abelt loop 84 of holster for a sidearm, and also secured to a belt of a user, a wide variety of other uses are possible and contemplated. For example, thesupport structure 14 of theadapter 10 may be secured to loop of a carrying case, such as a loop on a holster, sheath, scabbard, or the like, for a wide variety of weapons, knives, swords, tools, electronic devices, or the like. Further, theclip portion 18 of theadapter 10 may be used to secure theadapter 10 to a wide variety of other structures, or articles of clothing, as desired. For example, the clip structure may be used to secure the adapter to a waistband, a pocket, such as the hem of a pocket, or other article of clothing of a user. Additionally, the clip structure may be used to secure the adapter to structures other than an article of clothing of a user. -
FIGS. 5A-5E show various views of theadapter 10, including a front view (FIG. 5A ) is rear view (FIG. 5B ), a first lateral side view (FIG. 5C ), a second lateral side view (FIG. 5D ), a top view (FIG. 5E ) and a bottom view (FIG. 5F ). - In some embodiments, the
support structure 14 and/orclip structure 18 and/or the major components of theadapter 10, including thesupport structure 14 andclip structure 18, may be of unitary and/or monolithic and/or single piece construction. For example, thesupport structure 14 individually, theclip structure 18 individually, and/or theentire adapter 10 including the support structure and clip structure as a whole, may be defined by a single piece of material as opposed to being defined by two or more separate components secured to one another. In the embodiment shown inFIGS. 1-5 , theentire adapter 10 including thesupport structure 14 andclip structure 18 as a whole, are shown to be of single piece or of monolithic construction. However, in other embodiments, theadapter 10 and/or theclip structure 18 and/or theentire adapter 10 may be made of or defined by two or more separate components secured to one another through one or more attachment mechanism. - For example,
FIG. 6 shows an exploded perspective view of an alternative embodiment of anadapter 110, including a generally similar configuration to that ofadapter 10, but wherein thesupport structure 114 and theclip structure 118 are separate components that may be selectively secured together by anattachment mechanism 170. Thesupport structure 114 includes generally similar structure to that ofsupport structure 14 discussed above, wherein like reference numbers are used to label similar structures. For example, thesupport structure 114 includes a firstelongated support 60 and a secondelongated support 64 that may define thefirst channel 22 extending along axis Y. The discussion and description above regarding thesupport structure 18 and components thereof above may be similarly used to describe many remaining aspects of thesupport structure 114 and components thereof. - The
clip structure 118 in this embodiment also includes some similar structure to that ofclip structure 18 discussed above, wherein like reference numbers are used to label similar structures. In this embodiment, theclip structure 118 includes a firstelongate member 30 and also includes a secondelongate member 130. The first and second 30 and 130 may define theelongate members second channel 26 extending along axis X. For example, at least a portion of the 30 and 130 may be spaced from one another along at least a portion of their lengths, thereby defining theelongate members channel 26. The 30 and 130 may be attached together at aelongate members first end 42 thereby defining the stop orclosed end portion 44. Theclosed end portion 44 may include an exterior surface that is generally curved or rounded in shape as shown, or may take other shapes as desired, for example, any of the configurations discussed in the embodiments above. For example, theclip structure 118 may include a hinge and/or may include a spring or spring material to provide a closing force. The 30 and 130 may remain spaced from each other at a second end portion, thereby defining theelongate members open end 43 opposite that of theclosed end 44. The discussion and description above regarding theclip structure 18 above may be similarly used to describe many remaining aspects of theclip structure 118 and components thereof. - The
attachment mechanism 170 is provided to secure theclip structure 118 to thesupport structure 114. Theattachment mechanism 170 may allow for selective securement of theclip structure 118 to thesupport structure 114, and in some cases, may allow for selective adjustment of the angular orientation of theclip structure 118 relative to thesupport structure 114. For example,attachment mechanism 170 may allow for selective adjustment of the angle θ of the axis X of thesecond channel 26 defined by theclip structure 118 relative to axis Y of thefirst channel 22 defined by thesupport structure 118. Such adjustment may allow a user to tailor the orientation of theadapter 110 as desired for particular applications or desirable fit. Theattachment mechanism 170 may include structure to define pivot point, about which theclip structure 118 and thesupport structure 114 may be selectively pivotable relative to one another. In some cases, theclip structure 118 and thesupport structure 114 may be allowed to swing freely relative to one another, or may be selectively fixedly secured relative to one another. - In the embodiment shown, the
attachment mechanism 170 includes a threadedbolt 172, anaperture 173 defined into or through thesupport structure 114, and acorresponding aperture 175 defined into or through theclip structure 118. One or both of the 173 and 175 may be threaded for threading engagement with theapertures bolt 172. The threadedbolt 172 may be selectively disposed through theaperture 173 and into theaperture 175 to selectively secure theclip structure 118 to thesupport structure 114. For a degree of adjustability, the angular orientation of theclip structure 118 relative to thesupport structure 114 may be adjusted as desired prior to and/or during securement of theclip structure 118 to thesupport structure 114. For example,FIG. 7 shows theclip structure 118 secured to thesupport structure 114, and the angle θ can be adjusted as desired during securement. The angle θ may include any of the ranges of angles discussed above, and due to the adjustability of this embodiment, may include greater ranges than those provided above. In some embodiments, it is contemplated that the angular orientation may be adjusted such that theclip structure 118 and thesupport structure 114 may even be parallel to one another, or even extend to an angle beyond parallel, as desired. - To aid in reducing possible slippage and/or angular movement between the
clip structure 118 and thesupport structure 114 once they are secured together, the matingouter surface 190 of theclip structure 118 and/or the corresponding matingouter surface 191 of thesupport structure 118 may be provide with an friction enhanced and/or anti-slip and/or mechanically interlocking surface. For example, the matingouter surface 190 of theclip structure 118 may include anarea 192 including include one or more friction enhancing or interlockingstructures 194, such as one of more grooves, channels, protrusions, bumps, knobs, coatings, or the like, that are configured to engage the corresponding matingouter surface 191 of thesupport structure 118 to reduce slippage. Alternatively, or in addition, the mating outer surfaceouter surface 191 of the support structure may include a similar area to reduce slippage. - The adapter, such as
adapter 10/110, or the components thereof, may be formed or made using any of a wide variety of manufacturing techniques and/or materials. For example, the adapter or components thereof may be made by molding, such as injection molding, casting, milling, stamping, die cutting, 3D printing, laser cutting, bending, cold working, drilling, or other desired processes. The adapter, or components thereof, may be formed from any of a variety of materials, such as a metallic material including one or more metal or metal alloy, such as aluminum or aluminum alloys, tin or tin alloys, iron or iron alloys, including steel, such as stainless steel, beryllium or beryllium alloys, titanium or titanium alloys, or the like or others; or a polymeric material including any of a broad variety or thermoplastic or thermosetting polymers, some examples of which may include polyvinylchloride (PVC), polycarbonates, polyether ether ketone (PEEK), polyurethane, polyethylene (PE), ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyamide, polyether block amide (PEBA), polyimide, nylon, or mixtures or blends or copolymers thereof; or a metal-polymer composite; fiberglass; ceramics; wood; laminates; combinations or composites thereof, or the like, or other suitable material. - In embodiments where different portions are made of different materials, the different portions can be connected using a suitable connecting technique and/or with a connector or fastener. For example, the different portions can be connected using welding (including laser welding), soldering, brazing, adhesive, various fasteners or fasting or securement techniques, such as screws, bolts, rivets, or the like, or combinations thereof.
- In some embodiments, the exterior surface may be coated, textured, treated or otherwise given a finish as desired. For example, a coating, for example a protective or other type of coating may be applied over portions or the entire adapter. Likewise, the surface may be etched, checkered, sandblasted, beadblasted, sodium bicarbonate-blasted, electropolished, plated, or the like, as desired. Aestetic features may be included, such as coloring, shaping, etc.
- It should be understood that this disclosure is, in many respects, only illustrative. Changes may be made in details, particularly in matters of shape, size, and arrangement of steps without exceeding the scope of the disclosure. This may include, to the extent that it is appropriate, the use of any of the features of one example embodiment being used in other embodiments. The invention's scope is, of course, defined in the language in which the appended claims are expressed.
Claims (20)
1. An adapter for a carrying case, the adapter comprising:
a support structure defining a first channel extending along a first central axis, the support structure configured to accept a portion of the carrying case within the first channel; and
a clip structure defining a second channel extending along a second central axis offset from the first central axis.
2. The adapter of claim 1 , wherein the support structure including a first support and a second support defining the first channel extending between a first opening and a second opening opposite the first opening, the first central axis extending from a center of the first opening to a center of the second opening; and wherein
the clip structure includes an elongate member defining the second channel extending between a third opening and a fourth opening opposite the third opening, the second central axis extending from the center of the third opening to the center of the fourth opening, wherein the second axis is angularly offset from the first axis.
3. The adapter of claim 1 , wherein the second central axis is offset from the first axis such that the second axis extends at an angle that is in the range of about 45° to about 135° relative to the first axis.
4. The adapter of claim 1 , wherein the second axis is offset from the first axis such that the second axis extends at an angle that is in the range of about 30° to about 120° relative to the first axis.
5. The adapter of claim 1 , wherein the second axis is offset from the first axis such that the second axis extends at an angle that is generally perpendicular to the first axis.
6. The adapter of claim 1 , wherein the clip structure includes an elongate member that includes a first portion that at least partially defines the second channel and a second portion that extends beyond the second channel.
7. The adapter of claim 6 , wherein the second portion of the elongate member includes a protrusion extending from a surface thereof.
8. The adapter of claim 7 , wherein the second portion of the elongate member includes an end section that extends beyond the protrusion.
9. The adapter of claim 1 , wherein the support structure includes a first elongated support and a second elongated support, and the first channel is defined between the first and second elongated supports.
10. The adapter of claim 9 , wherein the clip structure includes an elongate member having a first portion that is attached to the first elongated support, and the second channel is defined between the first elongated support and the elongate member.
11. The adapter of claim 1 , further comprising a restraining mechanism for selectively maintaining the portion of the carrying case within the first channel.
12. The adapter of claim 1 , wherein the support structure and the clip structure of the adapter are formed together as a single piece of material of monolithic or unitary construction.
13. The adapter of claim 1 , wherein the support structure and the clip structure of the adapter are separate components that are secured together by an attachment mechanism.
14. The adapter of claim 1 , wherein the support structure includes a first elongated support and a second elongated support that are connected together at a first end of the support structure and define the first channel therebetween; and
the clip structure includes an elongate member that includes a first portion that is attached to the first support and defines the second channel between the elongate member and the first elongated support, the elongate member further including a second portion that extends beyond the second channel.
15. An adapter for a carrying case, the adapter comprising:
a support structure defining a first opening extending along a first plane, a second opening opposite the first opening extending along a second plane, and a first channel extending from the first opening to the second opening, the support structure configured to accept a portion of the carrying case within the first channel; and
a clip structure defining a third opening extending along a third plane, a fourth opening opposite the third opening extending along a fourth plane, and a second channel extending between the third opening and a fourth opening;
wherein one of the first plane and the second plane is not parallel with one of the third plane and the fourth plane.
16. The adapter of claim 15 , wherein both the first plane and the second plane are not parallel with the third plane and the fourth plane.
17. The adapter of claim 15 , wherein one of the first plane and the second plane is angularly offset from one of the third plane and the fourth plane by an angle that is in the range of about 45° to about 135°.
18. The adapter of claim 15 , wherein one of the first plane and the second plane is angularly offset from one of the third plane and the fourth plane by an angle that is in the range of 30° to about 120°.
19. A method for adapting a carrying case, the method comprising:
attaching an adapter to a portion of the carrying case, the adapter including a support structure defining a first channel extending along a first central axis, the support structure configured to accept a portion of the carrying case within the first channel, the adapter further including a clip structure defining a second channel extending along a second central axis offset from the first central axis.
20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the support structure includes a first support and a second support defining the first channel extending between a first opening and a second opening opposite the first opening, the first central axis extending from a center of the first opening to a center of the second opening; and wherein the clip structure includes an elongate member defining the second channel extending between a third opening and a fourth opening opposite the third opening, the second central axis extending from the center of the third opening to the center of the fourth opening, wherein the second axis is angularly offset from the first axis.
