Abstract
A multipurpose, portable, lightweight net frame system for protecting a person and/or articles from mosquitoes and other insects is disclosed. The net frame system includes an adjustable frame adapted to support a protective net. The adjustable frame includes, in some embodiments, a first support and a second support that are coupled to a pair of base supports in a pivoting and lockable or securable fashion. The net frame system can be configured to enclose a lounge chair having the seatback in a substantially upright position or in a substantially flattened or reclined position. The net frame system also can be configured in a collapsed state for ease of storing and/or transporting.
Description
- The presently disclosed subject matter relates generally to net frame systems and more particularly to a multipurpose, portable, lightweight adjustable net frame system.
- Canopies designed to protect a person from mosquitoes and other insects typically use a mosquito net or other similar fabric to form an enclosure. Examples of two types of insect net enclosures include a tent type of insect enclosure and a suspended or hanging type of insect enclosure, each of which can have certain drawbacks. For example, these types of insect net enclosures may have multiple parts and therefore can be complex to manufacture, may be expensive, may be difficult to set up and break down (even requiring more than one person), may have a fixed size and shape, and the like.
- In some aspects, the presently disclosed subject matter provides a net frame system comprising an adjustable frame, wherein the adjustable frame comprises at least a first support and a second support, wherein the first support and second support each comprise a crossbar arranged between and coupled to a pair of side bars, wherein each pair of side bars is pivotably coupled to a pair of base supports, and wherein the first support can be independently adjusted and secured at an angle θ1 relative to the pair of base supports and the second support can be independently adjusted and secured at an angle θ2 relative to the pair of base supports in a configuration to support a net.
- In other aspects, the presently disclosed subject matter provides a method for using a net frame system, the method comprising one or more of the following steps: (a) providing a net frame system comprising an adjustable frame, the adjustable frame comprising at least a first support and a second support, wherein the first support and second support each comprise a crossbar arranged between and coupled to a pair of side bars, wherein each pair of side bars are pivotably coupled to a pair of base supports by a pair of axel stops, and wherein each pair of side bars can be independently adjusted at an angle θ relative to the pair of base supports, and wherein the net frame system further comprises a net supported by the first support and second support; (b) adjusting the first support to a desired angle θ1; (c) adjusting the second support to a desired angle θ2, wherein θ1 and θ2 can be the same or different; (d) lifting the net from a position outside of the net and placing one or more articles inside the net frame system; and (e) optionally entering the net.
- In yet other aspects, the method further comprises: (f) lifting the net from a position inside of the net; (g) exiting the net; (h) removing the one or more articles from the net; and (i) adjusting the first support and the second support to an angle θ of about 90 degrees relative to the pair of base supports.
- Certain aspects of the presently disclosed subject matter having been stated hereinabove, which are addressed in whole or in part by the presently disclosed subject matter, other aspects will become evident as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the accompanying Examples and Drawings as best described herein below.

Like numbers refer to like elements throughout. The presently disclosed subject matter may be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein; rather, these embodiments are provided so that this disclosure will satisfy applicable legal requirements. Indeed, many modifications and other embodiments of the presently disclosed subject matter set forth herein will come to mind to one skilled in the art to which the presently disclosed subject matter pertains having the benefit of the teachings presented in the foregoing descriptions and the associated Drawings. Therefore, it is to be understood that the presently disclosed subject matter is not to be limited to the specific embodiments disclosed and that modifications and other embodiments are intended to be included within the scope of the appended claims.
- In some embodiments, the presently disclosed subject matter provides a multipurpose, portable, lightweight adjustable net frame system for protecting a person and/or articles, including, but not limited to food, supplies, and the like, from mosquitoes and other insects, and methods of use thereof. In some embodiments, the multipurpose, portable, lightweight adjustable net frame system includes an adjustable frame structure for supporting a net, e.g., an insect net. One of ordinary skill in the art would recognize upon review of the presently disclosed subject matter that any net material is suitable for use with the presently disclosed net frame system.
- The frame structure is adjustable to accommodate different furniture configurations and user needs. In one embodiment, the frame structure is configured to accommodate a lounge chair, wherein the seatback of the lounge chair is in a substantially upright position. In another embodiment, the frame structure is configured to accommodate a lounge chair, wherein the seatback of the lounge chair is in a substantially flattened or reclined position. One of ordinary skill in the art upon review of the presently disclosed subject matter would recognize that the presently disclosed net frame system can be adapted to accommodate other articles as desired by the user including, but not limited to: a cot, bed, or sleeping bag; a bassinet, or other type of crib or bed for an infant, including an infant car seat; a picnic table, serving table, or other table suitable for serving food or for dining; and the like.
- In yet another embodiment, the frame structure is configured for storing the net frame system. In certain embodiments, the size of the multipurpose, portable, lightweight net frame system is fixed. In other embodiments, however, the size of the multipurpose, portable, lightweight net frame system is adjustable.
- Referring now to
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of anet frame system 100 for protecting a person and/or articles from mosquitoes and other insects, whereinnet frame system 100 is configured in an expanded configuration.Net frame system 100 is a multipurpose, portable, lightweight net frame system.Net frame system 100 includes a net 105, which in some embodiments, comprises an insect net, such as a mosquito nest, which is held or otherwise supported by anadjustable frame 110. In some embodiments, however,net disclosure 100 does not include net 105 and the user can provide a net of their choosing separately fromnet disclosure 100. Net 105 can be any suitable netting material. - In embodiments which include net 105, net 105 can be, for example, a one-piece insect or mosquito net, which is installed in or on
adjustable frame 110 in a manner thatnet frame system 100 is open to an underside, e.g., the ground or surface beneathnet frame system 100, such as a deck or poolside surface, but with the lower edges ofnet 105 touching the surface upon whichadjustable frame 110 is positioned.FIG. 1 showsnet frame system 100 in an expanded configuration in which a person can sit or recline therein. A person gains access tonet frame system 100 by lifting up any portion ofnet 105 and entering intoadjustable frame 110 and underneathnet 105. By contrast,FIG. 2 illustrates a perspective view ofnet frame system 100 in a collapsed configuration for ease of storage or transport. Other aspects ofadjustable frame 110 are shown and described with reference toFIG. 3 throughFIG. 20C . -

FIG. 3 ,FIG. 4 , andFIG. 5 ,adjustable frame 110 includes at least afirst support 120 and asecond support 130 that are coupled to a pair of base supports 140 (e.g., base supports 140 a, 140 b) in a pivoting fashion.First support 120, in some embodiments, is a U-shaped support that includes, for example, acrossbar 122 arranged between a pair of side bars 124. Namely,crossbar 122 is arranged between aside bar 124 a and aside bar 124 b, as shown. The ends of side bars 124 a, 124 b that are not coupled tocrossbar 122 are coupled to base supports 140 a, 140 b, respectively, in a pivoting fashion via a pair of axel stops 126 (e.g., axel stops 126 a and 126 b). Similarly,second support 130, in some embodiments, is a U-shaped support that includes, for example, acrossbar 132 arranged between a pair of side bars 134. Namely,crossbar 132 is arranged between aside bar 134 a and aside bar 134 b, as shown. The ends of side bars 134 a, 134 b that are not coupled tocrossbar 132 are coupled to base supports 140 a, 140 b, respectively, in a pivoting via a pair of axel stops 136 (e.g., axel stops 136 a and 136 b). As shown inFIG. 3 , for example,first support 120 andsecond support 130 each comprises separate pieces, i.e., 122 and 132 arranged between a pair of side bars 124 a, 124 b and 134 a, 134 b, respectively, which are coupled together. One of ordinary skill in the art upon review of the presently disclosed subject matter would recognize thatcrossbars first support 120 and/orsecond support 130 can each be made from one piece of material, e.g., one piece of tubing, which can be solid, telescoping, or collapsible, configured to accommodate net 105. - Because
first support 120 andsecond support 130 are coupled to base supports 140 a, 140 b in a pivoting fashion,crossbar 122 offirst support 120 andcrossbar 132 ofsecond support 130 can be moved together (as shown inFIG. 4 andFIG. 5 ), which is a collapsed configuration ofnet frame system 100 for ease of storage or transport, or moved away from each other (as shown inFIG. 3 ), which is an expanded configuration ofnet frame system 100 when in use. -
Crossbar 122 andside bars 124 offirst support 120 andcrossbar 132 andside bars 134 ofsecond support 130 can be formed, for example, of plastic, fiberglass, aluminum, wood, or any other suitable material. Further,crossbar 122 andside bars 124 offirst support 120 andcrossbar 132 andside bars 134 ofsecond support 130 can be hollow or solid or any combinations of hollow and solid bars. The length ofcrossbar 122 andside bars 124 offirst support 120 andcrossbar 132 andside bars 134 ofsecond support 130 can vary to accommodate any shape and size ofnet 105. Additionally,first support 120 andsecond support 130 are not limited to rectangular U-shaped. In another embodiment, instead of being straight,crossbar 122 offirst support 120 andcrossbar 132 ofsecond support 130 are bowed upward to achieve rounded supports. - The lengths and diameters of
crossbar 122 andside bars 124 offirst support 120,crossbar 132 andside bars 134 ofsecond support 130, and base supports 140 a, 140 b can vary depending on the overall size ofnet frame system 100. In one embodiment, ifnet frame system 100 is sized for use by a child, then the lengths and diameters ofcrossbar 122 andside bars 124 offirst support 120,crossbar 132 andside bars 134 ofsecond support 130, and base supports 140 a, 140 b are set accordingly. In another embodiment, ifnet frame system 100 is sized for use by an adult, then the lengths and diameters ofcrossbar 122 andside bars 124 offirst support 120,crossbar 132 andside bars 134 ofsecond support 130, and base supports 140 a, 140 b are set accordingly. -
FIG. 6 illustrates a perspective view of one base support 140 (e.g.,base support 140 a) ofadjustable frame 110 ofnet frame system 100, showing more details of the axel stops thereof. Axel stops 126 a, 126 b offirst support 120 and axel stops 136 a, 136 b ofsecond support 130 are the mechanisms by whichfirst support 120 andsecond support 130 pivot on base supports 140 a, 140 b and lock or are otherwise secured into the various positions. - The locations and spacing of the axel stops can vary. For example, the spacing between axel stop 126 a and axel stop 136 a on
base support 140 a can vary and the spacing between axel stop 126 b and axel stop 136 b onbase support 140 b can vary. Further, axel stop 126 a and axel stop 136 a can be positioned at substantially the center portion ofbase support 140 a or axel stop 126 a can be positioned near one end ofbase support 140 a and axel stop 136 a can be positioned near the opposite end ofbase support 140 a. Similarly, axel stop 126 b and axel stop 136 b can be positioned at substantially the center portion ofbase support 140 b or axel stop 126 b can be positioned near one end ofbase support 140 b and axel stop 136 b can be positioned near the opposite end ofbase support 140 b. Additionally, axel stops 126 a, 126 b, 136 a, 136 b can be installed on the inside of base supports 140 a, 140 b (as shown) or on the outside of base supports 140 a, 140 b. - Using axel stops 126 a and 126 b,
first support 120 can be locked or otherwise secured at various angles θ1 with respect to base supports 140 a and 140 b. Similarly, using axel stops 136 a and 136 b,second support 130 can be locked or otherwise secured at various angles θ2 with respect to base supports 140 a and 140 b. In one embodiment, axel stops 126 a, 126 b, 136 a, 136 b provide predetermined locking points. Representative examples of predetermined locking points are angles θ1 and θ2=about 30 degrees, angles θ1 and θ2=about 45 degrees, angles θ1 and θ2=about 60 degrees, and angles θ1 and θ2=about 90 degrees. Angles θ1 and θ2 can be the same or different. One of ordinary skill in the art would recognize upon review of the presently disclosed subject matter that the predetermined locking point can be any angles θ1 and θ2 from about 0 degrees to about 110 degrees, including 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109, and 110 degrees. Angles θ1 and θ2=about 90 degrees is the collapsed configuration ofnet frame system 100 for ease of storage or transport (as shown inFIG. 2 ,FIG. 4 andFIG. 5 ). - Axel stops 126 a, 126 b, 136 a, 136 b can be implemented using any one of a number of methods. For example, axel stops 126 a, 126 b, 136 a, 136 b can be implemented using screws, inner axel stops, and the like. More details of examples of axel stops 126 a, 126 b, 136 a, 136 b are described with reference to
FIG. 7 throughFIG. 13 . - In one embodiment and referring now to
FIG. 7 andFIG. 8 , each of axel stops 126 and 136 is an assembly that includes abase plate 710 that is mechanically coupled to the inside ofbase support 140 and asupport plate 716 that is mechanically coupled to the side bars 124 or 134 of thefirst support 120 orsecond support 130, respectively. For example,base plate 710 can be affixed tobase support 140 via an adhesive, such as epoxy adhesive. Accordingly,base plate 710 is fixed and stationary with respect tobase support 140. - Referring now to
FIG. 9 , which shows a plan view and a side view of arepresentative base plate 710,base plate 710 is, for example, a circular disk (e.g., a metal or plastic disk) that has a peg or stop 712 protruding from one side thereof and near the perimeter thereof as shown. Additionally,base plate 710 has anopening 714 in the center portion thereof for receiving an axel portion of side bars 124 and 134 of thefirst support 120 orsecond support 130, respectively. Peg or stop 712 can be, for example, from about ⅛ inches to about 3/16 inches in length and from about ⅛ inches to about 3/16 inches in diameter. Additionally, the tip of peg or stop 712 can be rounded. When installed onbase support 140, peg or stop 712 ofbase plate 710 is positioned toward the top of base support 140 (i.e., away from the ground or surface upon whichbase support 140 is positioned), as shown inFIG. 7 andFIG. 8 . - Referring again to
FIG. 7 andFIG. 8 ,support plate 716 is provided around anaxel potion 720 of side bars 124 and 134 offirst support 120 orsecond support 130, respectively, as shown. More specifically,support plate 716 is arranged to be engaged with base plate 710 (as shown inFIG. 7 ) and disengaged from base plate 710 (as shown inFIG. 8 ). Referring now toFIG. 10 , which shows a plan view and a side view of an embodiment ofsupport plate 716,support plate 716 is, for example, a circular disk (e.g., a metal or plastic disk) that has a plurality of holes or openings 718 (e.g., 718 a, 718 b, 718 c, and 718 d) for receiving peg or stop 712 ofopenings base plate 710 as shown. In another embodiment and referring now toFIG. 11 , instead of holes oropenings 718,support plate 716 includes a plurality of dimples or detents 719 (e.g., 719 a, 719 b, 719 c, and 719 d) for receiving peg or stop 712 ofdetents base plate 710 as shown. Accordingly, holes oropenings 718 and dimples ordetents 719 are sized according to the size of peg or stop 712 ofbase plate 710. -
Axel portion 720 passes throughsupport plate 716 as shown. The positions offirst support 120 andsecond support 130 and therefore the position ofsupport plate 716 is adjustable with respect tobase support 140. Namely,axel portion 720 of axel stops 126 and 136 is rotatable with respect tobase support 140. - Referring again to
FIG. 10 andFIG. 11 , the positions of 718 a, 718 b, 718 c, and 718 d oropenings 719 a, 719 b, 719 c, and 719 d indetents support plate 716 are shown with respect to a plane A, wherein plane A is substantially parallel to the plane ofbase support 140 and/or the plane of the ground or surface upon whichbase support 140 is positioned. Further, with respect toaxel portion 720 of axel stops 126 and 136,support plate 716 is rotatable about a center axis of rotation AX. In one embodiment, the design and layout of 718 a, 718 b, 718 c, and 718 d andopenings 719 a, 719 b, 719 c, and 719 d is as follows. Using opening 718 a anddetents detent 719 a as the reference and positioned at an angle α1 of about 90 degrees with respect to plane A, opening 718 b anddetent 719 b are positioned at an angle α2 of about 60 degrees with respect to plane A, opening 718 c anddetent 719 c are positioned at an angle α2 of about 45 degrees with respect to plane A, opening 718 d anddetent 719 d are positioned at an angle α2 of about 30 degrees with respect to plane A. The positions of 718 a, 718 b, 718 c, and 718 d oropenings 719 a, 719 b, 719 c, and 719 d indetents support plate 716 that are shown inFIG. 10 andFIG. 11 , respectively, are exemplary only.Support plate 716 can include any number ofopenings 718 and/ordetents 719, which can be positioned at any locations at any angle α with respect to plane A. - Referring now again to
FIG. 7 andFIG. 8 ,axel potion 720 of side bars 124 and 134 offirst support 120 orsecond support 130 is rotatable coupled tobase support 140. For example,axel potion 720 of side bars 124 and 134 can be solid or include a solid insert that includes a threaded hole in which a bolt or screw 722 can be coupled as shown. In so doing, axel stops 126 and 136 can be rotatably coupled to base supports 140. Further, axel stops 126 and 136 can include any mechanism that allowssupport plate 716 to be engaged with base plate 710 (as shown inFIG. 7 ) and disengaged from base plate 710 (as shown inFIG. 8 ) such thatsupport plate 716 andaxel potion 720 of side bars 124 and 134 can be rotated with respect tobase support 140. In the embodiment shown inFIG. 7 andFIG. 8 , axel stops 126 and 136 are spring-loaded. Namely, each of axel stops 126 and 136 includes aspring 724. The spring-loaded feature of axel stops 126 and 136 allows the user to pull 124 and 134 and disengageside bars support plate 716 from base plate 710 (as shown inFIG. 8 ). When the user releases side bars 124 and/or 134,spring 724 automatically pullssupport plate 716 towardbase plate 710, thereby reengagingsupport plate 716 with base plate 710 (as shown inFIG. 7 ). - The operation of axel stops 126 and 136 of
net frame system 100 is provided as follows. When opening 718 a ordetent 719 a ofsupport plate 716 is engaged with peg or stop 712 ofbase plate 710, then angles θ1 and θ2 offirst support 120 andsecond support 130, respectively, are set to about 90 degrees, as shown inFIG. 12 . When opening 718 b ordetent 719 b ofsupport plate 716 is engaged with peg or stop 712 ofbase plate 710, then angles θ1 and θ2 offirst support 120 andsecond support 130, respectively, are set to about 60 degrees. When opening 718 c ordetent 719 c ofsupport plate 716 is engaged with peg or stop 712 ofbase plate 710, then angles θ1 and θ2 offirst support 120 andsecond support 130, respectively, are set to about 45 degrees, as shown inFIG. 13 . When opening 718 d ordetent 719 d ofsupport plate 716 is engaged with peg or stop 712 ofbase plate 710, then angles θ1 and θ2 offirst support 120 andsecond support 130, respectively, are set to about 30 degrees. - In
FIG. 12 andFIG. 13 , note that the arrangement ofopenings 718 in thesupport plate 716 of axel stop 126 a is mirror image of the arrangement ofopenings 718 insupport plate 716 of axel stop 136 a. This arrangement is configured so thatfirst support 120 andsecond support 130 can be spread apart from one another, as shown, for example, inFIG. 3 . - In another embodiment and referring now to
FIG. 14 andFIG. 15 , each of axel stops 126 and 136 is an assembly that includes abase plate 1410 that is mechanically coupled to the inside ofbase support 140. For example,base plate 1410 can be affixed tobase support 140 via an adhesive, such as epoxy adhesive. Accordingly,base plate 1410 is fixed and stationary with respect tobase support 140.Base plate 1410 is, for example, a circular disk (e.g., a metal or plastic disk) that has a plurality ofslots 1412 arranged therein. More details ofbase plate 1410 are shown and described with reference toFIG. 16A . Protruding from one side of side bars 124 and 134 offirst support 120 orsecond support 130, respectively, is atab 1416 that is sized to fit within any one ofslots 1412 inbase plate 1410. - In
FIG. 14 andFIG. 15 , each of axel stops 126 and 136 further includes abolt 1420 that passes through anopening 1414 in base plate 1410 (seeFIG. 16A ) and anopening 1418 in side bars 124 or 134 (seeFIG. 16B ).Bolt 1420 allows side bars 124 and 134 to swivel with respect to base support 140 (seeFIG. 16B ) and be tightened in any desired position via, for example, awing nut 1422. Awasher 1424 may be provided at the head ofbolt 1420. Likewise, awasher 1426 may be provided atwing nut 1422. - By tightening or loosening
wing nut 1422,tab 1416 of side bars 124 or 134 can be engaged in one ofslots 1412 in base plate 1410 (as shown inFIG. 14 ) or disengaged fromslots 1412 in base plate 1410 (as shown inFIG. 15 ).Bolt 1420 allows 360-degree rotation offirst support 120 andsecond support 130 with respect tobase support 140. - Referring now to
FIG. 16A , any arrangement ofslots 1412 can be provided inbase plate 1410.Slots 1412 are arranged axially with respect toopening 1414, as shown. Each ofslots 1412 corresponds to a different angle θ1 offirst support 120 or a different angle θ2 ofsecond support 130. In one example,slots 1412 are elongated grooves that are formed to a certain depth inbase plate 1410. In another example,slots 1412 are elongated openings that go all the way throughbase plate 1410. - In yet another embodiment of axel stops 126 and 136 and referring now to
FIG. 17 andFIG. 18 ,slots 1412 inbase plate 1410 are omitted andtabs 1416 in side bars 124 and 134 are omitted. In this example,first support 120 andsecond support 130 are held by pressure (or friction) only between side bars 124 or 134 andbase plate 1410. By tightening or looseningwing nut 1422, side bars 124 or 134 can be tightened and secured against base plate 1410 (as shown inFIG. 17 ) or loosened from base plate 1410 (as shown inFIG. 18 ). In yet another example,base plate 1410 is omitted andfirst support 120 andsecond support 130 are held by pressure (or friction) directly against base supports 140 usingbolt 1420 andwing nut 1422. This example allows 360-degree adjustment offirst support 120 andsecond support 130 with respect tobase support 140. - In certain embodiments, the size of
net frame system 100 is fixed, meaning that the lengths ofcrossbar 122 andside bars 124 offirst support 120,crossbar 132 andside bars 134 ofsecond support 130, and base supports 140 are fixed. By way of example, Table 1 below shows representative, non-limiting specifications of anet frame system 100 that is configured to be used by a child and Table 2 below shows representative, non-limiting specifications of anet frame system 100 that is configured to be used by an adult. -

FIG. 19A ,FIG. 19B , andFIG. 19C illustrate perspective views of examples of adjustingmechanisms 150 ofnet frame system 100. Namely, adjustingmechanisms 150 are examples of methods of implementing telescoping action intocrossbar 122 and/orside bars 124 offirst support 120,crossbar 132 and/orside bars 134 ofsecond support 130, base supports 140, and any combinations thereof. In the embodiment shown inFIG. 19A , adjustingmechanism 150 includes aninner rod 152, which can be a solid or hollow rod, that is inserted into a hollowouter rod 154 in slidable fashion. Athumbscrew 156 is threaded through hollowouter rod 154 such that the end ofthumbscrew 156 can be tightened againstinner rod 152. By looseningthumbscrew 156,inner rod 152 can slide to varying degrees within hollowouter rod 154 and the length of the telescoping rod can be adjusted. By tighteningthumbscrew 156, the length of the telescoping rod can be fixed and secured. - In the embodiment shown in
FIG. 19B , adjustingmechanism 150 includesinner rod 152 that is inserted into the hollowouter rod 154 in slidable fashion, as described inFIG. 19A . Instead ofthumbscrew 156, however, aconnector sleeve 158 is provided.Connector sleeve 158 is rotatable. By looseningconnector sleeve 158, the pressure againstinner rod 152 is released. Therefore,inner rod 152 can slide to varying degrees within hollowouter rod 154 and the length of the telescoping rod can be adjusted. By tighteningconnector sleeve 158, pressure is applied againstinner rod 152 and the length of the telescoping rod can be fixed and secured. - In the embodiment shown in
FIG. 19C , adjustingmechanism 150 includes two or more tubular members 160 that are slidably coupled to one another and can be fixed in a certain position via one or more locking mechanisms 162. Adjustingmechanism 150 ofFIG. 19C is the type of telescoping member commonly used in the legs of, for example, video camera tripods. In one example, adjustingmechanism 150 ofFIG. 19C includes four tubular members 160; which are, in order, 160 a, 160 b, 160 c, and 160 d.tubular members 160 a, 160 b, 160 c, and 160 d are arranged from smallest to largest in diameter.Tubular members Tubular member 160 a is slidably coupled intotubular member 160 b and can be locked in position vialocking mechanism 162 a.Tubular member 160 b is slidably coupled intotubular member 160 c and can be locked in position vialocking mechanism 162 b.Tubular member 160 c is slidably coupled intotubular member 160 d and can be locked in position vialocking mechanism 162 c. Locking mechanisms 162 are the flip-tab or flip-lever release type of locking mechanism commonly used in the legs of, for example, video camera tripods. -
FIG. 20A ,FIG. 20B , andFIG. 20C illustrate perspective views of embodiments of fixed length- and adjustable length-member 1500 offirst support 120 orsecond support 130 ofnet frame system 100. The fixed length- or adjustable length-member 1500 can be, for example,crossbar 122 andside bars 124 offirst support 120,crossbar 132 andside bars 134 ofsecond support 130, and/or base supports 140. - Referring now to
FIG. 15A , a fixed length-member 1500 is shown that includes asingle tubular unit 1510. Referring now toFIG. 15B , another fixed length-member 1500 is shown. This fixed length-member 1500, however, includes two tubular units 1510 (e.g., 1510 a and 1510 b) that are permanently coupled to each other via a fixedtubular units coupling 1512 to form a single support unit. Referring now toFIG. 15C , an adjustable length-member 1500 is shown that includes two 1510 a and 1510 b. In this embodiment,tubular units 1510 a and 1510 b are slidably coupled to each other via, for example,tubular units connector sleeve 158 of adjustingmechanism 150 described inFIG. 19B . For example,tubular unit 1510 a corresponds to hollowouter rod 154 described inFIG. 19A andFIG. 19B andtubular unit 1510 b corresponds toinner rod 152 described inFIG. 19A andFIG. 19B . -
FIG. 21 illustrates a perspective view of a corner portion ofnet frame system 100, showing more details of attaching net 105 toadjustable frame 110. In this embodiment, openings or holes are provided in the corners offirst support 120 andsecond support 130. Namely, openings or holes are provided near the two ends ofcrossbar 122 offirst support 120 and ofcrossbar 132 ofsecond support 130. Then,ties 107 are used to fasten certain portions of net 105 toadjustable frame 110, as shown. Usingties 107, net 105 is hung fromadjustable frame 110. -
Net frame system 100, however, is not limited to hanging net 105 fromadjustable frame 110. In another embodiment,adjustable frame 110 is first set up withoutnet 105 attached thereto. Then, net 105 is provided separately and simply draped over the outside ofadjustable frame 110, with the lower edges ofnet 105 hanging down to the surface upon whichadjustable frame 110 is positioned. In either embodiment, net 105 hangs down the sides ofadjustable frame 110 and comes into contact with the surface. The underside ofnet frame system 100 is open to the surface. -
FIG. 22 ,FIG. 23 , andFIG. 24 show embodiments ofnet frame system 100 in use. For example,FIG. 22 shows a representative configuration ofnet frame system 100 for enclosing alounge chair 170 having the seatback in a substantially upright position. In this embodiment, angle θ1 offirst support 120 is about 30 degrees and angle θ2 ofsecond support 130 is about 45 degrees. -
FIG. 23 shows a representative configuration ofnet frame system 100 for enclosinglounge chair 170 having the seatback in a substantially flattened or reclined position. In this embodiment, angle θ1 offirst support 120 is about 30 degrees and angle θ2 ofsecond support 130 is about 45 degrees. -
FIG. 24 shows another representative configuration ofnet frame system 100 for enclosinglounge chair 170 having the seatback in a flattened or reclined position. In this embodiment, angle θ1 offirst support 120 is about 30 degrees and angle θ2 ofsecond support 130 is about 30 degrees. -
Net frame system 100 can include various features and can be implemented in various ways. For example, in addition to collapsing as shown, for example, inFIG. 2 , the entire unit may break down in other ways for ease of transport; namely,crossbar 122 andside bars 124 offirst support 120 andcrossbar 132 andside bars 134 ofsecond support 130 may break down further by separating, folding, telescoping, and the like. In this way,net frame system 100 may break down into several pieces or may collapse at several points infirst support 120 andsecond support 130. Assuming thatcrossbar 122 andside bars 124 offirst support 120 andcrossbar 132 andside bars 134 ofsecond support 130 are hollow,crossbar 122 andside bars 124 offirst support 120 andcrossbar 132 andside bars 134 ofsecond support 130 can be connected by a monofilament running (not shown) through their center. Similarly, base supports 140 may be various lengths and may be broken down or telescoped, separated, collapsed, or folded to makenet frame system 100 more compact for travel. -
Adjustable frame 110 can be configured in at least three general positions: horizontal for a covering, for example, a cot or bed; at an angle to accommodate, for example, a lounge chair; and standing up for storage or in a standby position.Net frame system 100 can be implemented using asingle net 105. Further,adjustable frame 110 ofnet frame system 100 is not limited to two supports (i.e.,first support 120 and second support 130).Adjustable frame 110 can include, for example, three or more supports that can be adjusted to various angles θ when in use and collapsed together for storing or transporting. By way of example,FIG. 25 illustrates an embodiment of anet frame system 100 that includes more than two supports; namely,FIG. 25 shows an embodiment of anet frame system 100 that includes three supports. In this embodiment, athird support 180 is provided in betweenfirst support 120 andsecond support 130.Third support 180 can be used, for example, to support a center portion ofnet 105, whilefirst support 120 andsecond support 130 are used to support each end ofnet 105. - In some embodiments, the presently disclosed
net frame system 100 can include a container, such as a bag, e.g., a tote bag, carry bag, or luggage bag, case, tube, canister, and the like, for securing, storing, carrying, and/or shippingnet frame system 100 in an unassembled or disassembled configuration. The container can be a soft bag or a rigid, e.g., plastic or metal, container, such as a tubular canister. The container can be sealed, e.g., by use of a zipper, or other means of closing the container, or by a sealable top, e.g., in the example of a tubular canister. The container also can include a handle for gripping and/or a shoulder strap for ease of carrying. The container also can include instructions for assembling or disassembling the net frame system. - Accordingly, in some embodiments, the presently disclosed subject matter provides a net frame system comprising an adjustable frame, wherein the adjustable frame comprises at least a first support and a second support, wherein the first support and second support each comprise a crossbar arranged between and coupled to a pair of side bars, wherein each pair of side bars is pivotably coupled to a pair of base supports, and wherein the first support can be independently adjusted and secured at an angle θ1 relative to the pair of base supports and the second support can be independently adjusted and secured at an angle θ2 relative to the pair of base supports in a configuration to support a net. In some embodiments, the angle θ1 and θ2 each independently has a range from about 0 degrees to about 110 degrees relative to the pair of base supports.
- In certain embodiments, each pair of side bars is pivotably coupled to the pair of base supports by a bolt and a nut. In such embodiments, the first support and the second support can be adjusted or secured at an angle θ1 or θ2 relative to the pair of base supports by tightening or loosening the bolt and nut through which each pair of side bars is pivotably coupled to the pair of base supports.
- In other embodiments, each pair of side bars is pivotably coupled to the pair of base supports by an axel stop. In certain embodiments, the axel stop comprises a base plate mechanically coupled to an inside of the base support. In such embodiments, the base plate comprises one or more slots configured to secure the first or second support at an angle θ1 or θ2 relative to the pair of base supports. In such embodiments, each pair of side bars comprises one or more tabs configured to fit in the one or more slots to secure the first or second support at an angle θ1 or θ2 relative to the pair of base supports.
- In yet other embodiments, the base plate comprises a peg protruding from one side thereof, wherein the peg is configured to secure the first or second support at an angle θ1 or θ2 relative to the pair of base supports. In such embodiments, each pair of side bars further comprise a support plate, wherein the support plate comprises one or more detents configured to receive the peg to secure the first or second support at an angle θ1 or θ2 relative to the pair of base supports.
- In some embodiments, one or more of each crossbar and side bar comprises two or more tubular units coupled together to form a single crossbar unit. In certain embodiments, the two or more tubular units are coupled to form a single crossbar unit having a fixed length. In some embodiments, the two or more tubular units are telescopically or slidably coupled to form a single crossbar unit having an adjustable length.
- In yet other embodiments, the first support and the second support each comprise a single piece of tubing or a plurality of pieces of tubing permanently coupled to each other to form a single support unit.
- In some embodiments, the first support and the second support comprise two or more pieces of hollow tubing and wherein the two or more pieces of hollow tubing further comprise a monofilament running through the hollow tubing thereof.
- In yet other embodiments, the net frame system further comprises at least a third support positioned in between the first support and the second support. In such embodiments, the third support comprises a crossbar arranged between and coupled to a pair of side bars, wherein the pair of side bars is pivotably coupled to a pair of base supports, and wherein the pair of side bars can be adjusted at an angle θ3 relative to the pair of base supports. In certain embodiments, the angle θ3 is about 90° relative to the pair of base supports.
- In other embodiments, the net frame system further comprises a net.
- In some embodiments, the net frame system further comprises a container for securing, storing, carrying, and/or shipping the net frame system.
- Referring now to
FIG. 26 is illustrated a flow diagram of an embodiment of amethod 2600 for usingnet frame system 100 for protecting a person and/or articles from mosquitoes and other insects.Method 2600 may include, but is not limited to, the following steps. - At a
step 2610, starting withnet frame system 100 in the collapsed configuration as shown inFIG. 2 ,first support 120 is adjusted to any desired angle θ1. In one embodiment, using axel stops 126 a and 126 b, the user sets the angle θ1 offirst support 120 to about 30 degrees and locks or otherwise securesfirst support 120 in position, as shown inFIG. 22 ,FIG. 23 , andFIG. 24 . - At a
step 2615,second support 130 is adjusted to any desired angle θ2. In one embodiment, using axel stops 136 a and 136 b, the user sets the angle θ2 ofsecond support 130 to about 45 degrees and locks or otherwise securessecond support 130 in position, as shown inFIG. 22 andFIG. 23 . In another embodiment, using axel stops 136 a and 136 b, the user sets the angle θ2 ofsecond support 130 to about 30 degrees and locks or otherwise securessecond support 130 in position, as shown inFIG. 24 . - At a
step 2620, from the outside ofnet frame system 100, the user lifts upnet 105 and then places, for example, a chair, a cot, or any personal items insidenet frame system 100. In one embodiment, the user lifts upnet 105 and then placeslounge chair 170 insidenet frame system 100, as shown inFIG. 22 ,FIG. 23 , andFIG. 24 . - At a
step 2625, from the outside ofnet frame system 100, the user lifts upnet 105 and then entersnet frame system 100. For example, the user entersnet frame system 100 by simply lifting up any portion ofnet 105 and ducking intoadjustable frame 110 and underneathnet 105. - At a
step 2630, from the inside ofnet frame system 100, the user lifts upnet 105 and then exitsnet frame system 100. - At a
step 2635, from the outside ofnet frame system 100, the user lifts upnet 105 and then removes, for example, the chair, cot, or any personal items fromnet frame system 100. In one embodiment, the user lifts upnet 105 and then removeslounge chair 170 fromnet frame system 100. - At a
step 2640,first support 120 ofnet frame system 100 is returned to the collapsed configuration. For example, using axel stops 126 a and 126 b, the user sets the angle θ1 offirst support 120 to about 90 degrees and locks or otherwise securesfirst support 120 in position, as shown inFIG. 2 . - At a
step 2645,second support 130 ofnet frame system 100 is returned to the collapsed configuration. For example, using axel stops 136 a and 136 b, the user sets the angle θ2 ofsecond support 130 to about 90 degrees and locks or otherwise securessecond support 130 in position, as shown inFIG. 2 . - Accordingly, in some embodiments, the presently disclosed subject matter provides a method for using a net frame system, the method comprising one or more of the following steps: (a) providing a net frame system comprising an adjustable frame, the adjustable frame comprising at least a first support and a second support, wherein the first support and second support each comprise a crossbar arranged between and coupled to a pair of side bars, wherein each pair of side bars are pivotably coupled to a pair of base supports by a pair of axel stops, and wherein each pair of side bars can be independently adjusted at an angle θ relative to the pair of base supports, and wherein the net frame system further comprises a net supported by the first support and second support; (b) adjusting the first support to a desired angle θ1; (c) adjusting the second support to a desired angle θ2, wherein θ1 and θ2 can be the same or different; (d) lifting the net from a position outside of the net and placing one or more articles inside the net frame system; and (e) optionally entering the net.
- In other embodiments, the method further comprises: (f) lifting the net from a position inside of the net; (g) exiting the net; (h) removing the one or more articles from the net; and (i) adjusting the first support and the second support to an angle θ of about 90 degrees relative to the pair of base supports.
- Following long-standing patent law convention, the terms “a,” “an,” and “the” refer to “one or more” when used in this application, including the claims. Thus, for example, reference to “a subject” includes a plurality of subjects, unless the context clearly is to the contrary (e.g., a plurality of subjects), and so forth.
- Throughout this specification and the claims, the terms “comprise,” “comprises,” and “comprising” are used in a non-exclusive sense, except where the context requires otherwise. Likewise, the term “include” and its grammatical variants are intended to be non-limiting, such that recitation of items in a list is not to the exclusion of other like items that can be substituted or added to the listed items.
- For the purposes of this specification and appended claims, unless otherwise indicated, all numbers expressing amounts, sizes, dimensions, proportions, shapes, formulations, parameters, percentages, parameters, quantities, characteristics, and other numerical values used in the specification and claims, are to be understood as being modified in all instances by the term “about” even though the term “about” may not expressly appear with the value, amount or range. Accordingly, unless indicated to the contrary, the numerical parameters set forth in the following specification and attached claims are not and need not be exact, but may be approximate and/or larger or smaller as desired, reflecting tolerances, conversion factors, rounding off, measurement error and the like, and other factors known to those of skill in the art depending on the desired properties sought to be obtained by the presently disclosed subject matter. For example, the term “about,” when referring to a value can be meant to encompass variations of, in some embodiments, ±100% in some embodiments ±50%, in some embodiments ±20%, in some embodiments ±10%, in some embodiments ±5%, in some embodiments ±1%, in some embodiments ±0.5%, and in some embodiments ±0.1% from the specified amount, as such variations are appropriate to perform the disclosed methods or employ the disclosed compositions.
- Further, the term “about” when used in connection with one or more numbers or numerical ranges, should be understood to refer to all such numbers, including all numbers in a range and modifies that range by extending the boundaries above and below the numerical values set forth. The recitation of numerical ranges by endpoints includes all numbers, e.g., whole integers, including fractions thereof, subsumed within that range (for example, the recitation of 1 to 5 includes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, as well as fractions thereof, e.g., 1.5, 2.25, 3.75, 4.1, and the like) and any range within that range.
- Although the foregoing subject matter has been described in some detail by way of illustration and example for purposes of clarity of understanding, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that certain changes and modifications can be practiced within the scope of the appended claims.
Claims (20)
1. A net frame system comprising an adjustable frame,
wherein the adjustable frame comprises at least a first support and a second support,
wherein the first support and second support each comprise a crossbar arranged between and coupled to a pair of side bars,
wherein each pair of side bars is pivotably coupled to a pair of base supports, wherein each base support has a length from one end of the base support to an opposite end of the base support along a surface upon which the pair of base supports is positioned ranging from about 8 inches to about 32 inches, wherein the pair of base supports is configured to independently support the net frame system on top of the surface upon which the net frame system is positioned, and
wherein the first support can be independently adjusted and secured at an angle θ1 relative to the pair of base supports and the second support can be independently adjusted and secured at an angle θ2 relative to the pair of base supports in a configuration to support a net.
2. The net frame system of claim 1 , wherein each pair of side bars is pivotably coupled to the pair of base supports by a bolt and a nut.
3. The net frame system of claim 2 , wherein the first support and the second support can be adjusted or secured at an angle θ1 or θ2 relative to the pair of base supports by tightening or loosening the bolt and nut through which each pair of side bars is pivotably coupled to the pair of base supports.
4. The net frame system of claim 1 , wherein each pair of side bars is pivotably coupled to the pair of base supports by an axel stop.
5. The net frame system of claim 4 , wherein the axel stop comprises a base plate mechanically coupled to an inside of the base support.
6. The net frame system of claim 5 , wherein the base plate comprises one or more slots configured to secure the first or second support at an angle θ1 or θ2 relative to the pair of base supports.
7. The net frame system of claim 6 , wherein each pair of side bars comprises one or more tabs configured to fit in the one or more slots to secure the first or second support at an angle θ1 or θ2 relative to the pair of base supports.
8. The net frame system of claim 5 , wherein the base plate comprises a peg protruding from one side thereof, wherein the peg is configured to secure the first or second support at an angle θ1 or θ2 relative to the pair of base supports.
9. The net frame system of claim 8 , wherein each pair of side bars further comprise a support plate, wherein the support plate comprises one or more detents configured to receive the peg to secure the first or second support at an angle θ1 or θ2 relative to the pair of base supports.
10. The net frame system of claim 1 , wherein one or more of each crossbar and side bar comprises two or more tubular units coupled together to form a single crossbar unit.
11. The net frame system of claim 10 , wherein the two or more tubular units are coupled to form a single crossbar unit having a fixed length.
12. The net frame system of claim 10 , wherein the two or more tubular units are telescopically or slidably coupled to form a single crossbar unit having an adjustable length.
13. The net frame system of claim 1 , wherein the first support and the second support each comprise a single piece of tubing or a plurality of pieces of tubing permanently coupled to each other to form a single support unit.
14. The net frame system of claim 1 , wherein the first support and the second support comprise two or more pieces of hollow tubing and wherein the two or more pieces of hollow tubing further comprise a monofilament running through the hollow tubing thereof.
15. The net frame system of claim 1 , wherein the angle θ1 and θ2 each independently has a range from about 0 degrees to about 110 degrees relative to the pair of base supports.
16. The net frame system of claim 1 , further comprising at least a third support positioned in between the first support and the second support.
17. The net frame system of claim 16 , wherein the third support comprises a crossbar arranged between and coupled to a pair of side bars, wherein the pair of side bars is pivotably coupled to a pair of base supports, and wherein the pair of side bars can be adjusted at an angle θ3 relative to the pair of base supports.
18. The net frame system of claim 17 , wherein the angle θ3 is about 90° relative to the pair of base supports.
19. The net frame system of claim 1 , further comprising a net.
20. The net frame system of claim 1 , further comprising a container for securing the net frame system in an unassembled or disassembled configuration.
