Description
- 1. Technical Field
- The present invent is related to quick release/lock apparatus in fall preventer device for a lifeboat, particularly to an apparatus able to be locked or released the U-shaped bar from the connecting base by an operator's two fingers pulling the two pin handles moving inwardly in opposite direction.
- 2. Description of the Prior Art
- In view of the sinking accident of the RMS Titanic which caused serious casualties in 1912, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has paid much attention to the completion and maintenance of a ship's lifesaving equipment. In addition, both the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the International Life-Saving Appliance Code (LSA) have prescribed that all the international voyage ships must be equipped with lifeboats, and large merchant ships, passenger liners and ferry boats must regularly carry out operation of the lifeboats' drill and further prescribed that under what condition it is necessary to carry out lifesaving drill when the ship's personnel is changed. The lifesaving equipment of a ship is the last defense for human lives at sea, having important function of rescuing personal on ship in case of emergency, and lifeboats are statutory lifesaving equipment of a ship and the safety of the lifeboats are worthy of attention no matter of shipwreck or lifesaving drill. Accidents have been happening over and over again around the world, and the most of them have happened frequently because of the lifeboat's hooks accidently loosening, which usually caused numbers casualties. Therefore, the Marine Safety Committee (MSC) has suggested that a fall preventer device shell be equipped on a lifeboat to enhance safety in a lifeboat drill as prescribed on MSC.1/Cir. 1327.
- As shown on
FIG. 1 , an ordinary suspendinglifeboat 1 is provided afixture 10 respectively at the bow and the stern. Thefixture 1 is provided ahook 11 and alatch 12. Hangingstrop 13 betweenlifeboat 1 and mother ship can be linked to thehook 11 of thelifeboat 1 as so to suspend the lifeboat by fastening to hangingring 14. Afall preventer device 2 is provided between thefixture 10 and thehanging strop 13 in order to prevent thelifeboat 1 accidently dropping from impropriated operation or mechanical failure. As shown onFIG. 1˜2 , a fall preventer device is disposed anauxiliary strop 20 bored with a connectingring 21 respectively on two ends of theauxiliary strop 20. A C-shaped connector 22 is respectively disposed on the two connectingrings 21 and provided with an opening 220. The two ends of the C-shaped 22 connector are respectively disposed athru hole 221 and athread hole 222. Apin 23 is inserted through thethru hole 221 and screwed into thethread hole 222 as so to close the opening 220 of the C-shaped connecter 22. One end of thepin 23 is designed as aholding end 230 and the other end is bored withthread 231. Therefore, the two C-shaped connectors 22 can be connected on the connectingrings 21 respectively on both ends of theauxiliary strop 20 so that the two C-shaped connectors 22 can be individually connected to thehanging strop 13 of the mother boat and thefixing ring 15 of thefixture 10 of thelifeboat 1 as shown onFIG. 1 . The reason of installing thefall preventer device 2 is that if thehook 11 is accidently loosened; theauxiliary strop 20 could still hold thelifeboat 1 as so to enhance safety. After dropping thelifeboat 1 to water surface, thepin 23 can be screwed outwardly to release from the C-shaped connectors 22 on one end ofauxiliary strop 20 so that theauxiliary strop 20 can be separated from either thehanging strop 13 of the mother ship or the hangingring 15 onfixture 10 of thelifeboat 1. In order to retrieve thelifeboat 1 back to mother ship, thepin 23 shall screwed the C-shaped connector 22 connecting with either thehanging strop 13 of the mother ship or thefixing ring 15 on thefixture 10 of thelifeboat 1. However, after dropping thelifeboat 1 to water surface, the lifeboat will swing strongly because of waves. An operator must hardly rotate thepin 23 so that thethread 231 of thepin 23 can be totally spun out from thethread hole 222 of the C-shaped connector 22 as so to remove thepin 23 from the C-shaped connector 22. In addition, after thepin 23 connecting to the C-shaped connector 22, they might be accidently loosened because of the connection tightness insufficient. But if the connection was too tight, it is difficult to remove thepin 23 from the C-shaped connector 22. Moreover, when the lifeboat is floated and driven by waves so that thepin 23 and the C-shaped connector 22 are the loading point, it is difficult to screw or remove thepin 23 from the C-shaped connector 22 under such condition. Therefore, the operation of locking or releasing is difficult and takes long time. Further, locking or releasing hook must be done very carefully by both hands of the operator, because the hands might be easily squeezed into the connection portion to be injured or broken finger. Moreover, due to thepin 23 is screwed into the C-shaped connector 22, thethread 231 of thepin 23 is easily rotated as automatically removing from thethread hole 222 of the C-shaped connector 22 so that theauxiliary strop 20 loses the connection. Additionally, if the two ends of the C-shaped connector 22 are pulled by outer force, a deformation will be created. The C-shaped connector 22 after deforming can't be firmly locked by thepin 23 so that a dropping might be happened and thefall preventer device 2 loses its' function. - This present invent can solve the defects of the conventional fall preventer device while releasing or locking, such as not firmly locking or not easy releasing at tidal waves, hands easy squeezed to be injured or broken finger, the insufficient strength of the construction, or easily deformation and so on.

FIG. 3˜7 , a fall preventer device is installed between thelifeboat 1 and thestrop 13 of the mother ship. In order to operate, the twoU-shaped bars 8 of the present invent are respectively inserted through the connectingrings 21 on the two ends of theauxiliary strop 20 of the fall preventer device. One of the twoU-shaped bars 8 is inserted through the fixingring 15 on thefixture 10 of thelifeboat 1 and one of the connectingbases 3 is fastened to theU-shaped bar 8. In order to fasten theU-shaped bar 8 with the connectingbase 3, the operator only needs to pull the two pin handles 6 of the connectingbase 3 moving oppositely towards the center, as shown onFIG. 6 , so that the twopins 5 inside of the connectingbase 3 can be removed from the slidinggrooves 32 of the connectingbase 3 and pressed the twosprings 4 inside of the twochambers 30 into resilient compressed condition. Then, the lockingrods 81 on two ends of theU-shaped bar 8 are respectively inserted into the insertinggrooves 32 of the connectingbase 3 and the stoppingedge 83 of theU-shaped bar 8 can hold in position inside of the connectingbase 3. After all, the two fingers can release from the two pin handles 6 so that the twopins 5 and the two pin handles 6 can be pushed back to the original position by the twosprings 4 because of the resilient recovery as so to the twopins 5 can be inserted respectively into to the two lockingholes 82 of the lockingrod 81 on the two ends of theU-shaped bar 8 as shown onFIG. 5 . Therefore, theU-shaped bar 8 is firmly connected to the connectingbase 3 which means one end of theauxiliary strop 20 is firmly connected to the fixingring 15 of thefixture 10 on thelifeboat 1. The other one of theU-shaped bars 8 and the connectingbase 3 are able to be fastened the other end of theauxiliary strop 20 on the hangingstrop 13 of the mother ship in the same way as shown onFIG. 7 . So, by using the present invent, a quick release/lock device in fall preventer device for a life boat, it is not only to help theauxiliary strop 20 firmly connected to the fixingring 15 of thefixture 10 on thelifeboat 1 and the hangingstrop 13 of the mother boat, but also improve safety while suspending thelifeboat 1. In additional, it is easy and quick to release or lock theU-shaped bar 8 with connectingbase 3 so that it can save time on releasing or locking. It also can reduce risks so that it can provide the best protection to the operator when operating. - While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been described above, it will be recognized and understood that various modifications may be made therein and the appended claims are intended to cover all such modifications that may fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
