Definitions
- the present invention is in the technical field of furniture. More particularly, the present invention is in the technical field of combination methods of two or three sofa.
- One of the first inventions in the subject of combining the furniture was the design of sofa bed. This invention caused such changes at its age so that it is producing and trading widely so far. Other different combinations such as converting chair into study chair and desk, standard chair into rocker chair, chair into convertible backpack, cooler combination lounge chair, and the combination of chair and ironing board and etc. is also made. According to the changes in life pattern and sometimes decreasing the space of home and office or even multiple use of place for home, office and parlor, using furniture with invariable shape and pattern seems not to be economical and useful for such consumers.
- a sofa generally is used for a long time so the invariable color, shape and framework of them becomes tedious for the end user after a while and also variation needs funding. For example suppose the lobby of a grand hotel, if the manager plans to change the furniture, how much will it cost for the hotel and how much time it takes?
- the production line of the furniture with a specified design will end after short time, and on the other hand, the reduction of total production and the ending of massproduction phase leads to increase in production costs and decrease in producer profits.
- This invention presents a kind of sofa which can be used on both sides, so that this feature can be added to different designs by make some changes.
- the capability to be used by both sides and the combination of two or three sofa into one sofa is considered regardless of design and color.
- This feature or capability can be presented in many varied designs and we can apply the combination of two different designs (almost in most of models) on one sofa.
- another sofa is designed under the first sofa by optimal and maximum use of the interior space of the first sofa and armrests in ergonomic form and complies with existing standards of this industry.
- armrests and backrest's edges of the first sofa is usually used as the legs of another sofa.
- a dynamic mechanical system is used to design two or three sofa into one.
- the seat bottom height can be adjusted by using a mechanical system to form another sofa on the other side with different pattern, shape, color and etc.
- the backrest of the first sofa transforms to the flat mode to become parallel with the seat bottom and after a 180 degrees rotation of the two-sided sofa, the backrest of the second sofa converts to the standing mode with the help of recliner systems or any other simple lockable system and forms second sofa with different pattern and etc.
- the third model is a transformative three sided sofa which can be used as three different sofas by a 180 or 90 degrees rotation and using mentioned mechanical systems. This sofa has folding legs and also is able to convert in to bed.
- different sofa can be designed by changing the framework, color, cloth and materials.
- another sofa will be formed with different pattern, color, shape and other features only by a rotation and in a short time, which has different view and matches with a different setting. For example consider the lobby of a grand hotel (mentioned in background section), now the manager can change the decoration by the help of this invention in a short time and with no cost.
- both sides of a two-sided sofa instead of a common single side sofa can increase the useful life time of the furniture.
- the surface of common sofa will decay faster compared with a two-sided sofa due to constant use of one side.
- transporting is much easier because of folding feature of the backrests of both sides.

Description
- This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application Ser. No. 61/723,874, filed Nov. 08, 2012.
- One of the human prime needs in the present world is the need of diversity and change in the life environment. A sofa generally is used for a long time so the invariable color, shape and framework of them becomes tedious for the end user after a while and also variation needs funding.
- When consumers decide to change the decoration and purchase new furniture, many factors such as price, switching costs, limitation of the space, required time for this change, shape, color and design, being single-multi function and etc. could affect their choices. And also maybe consumers use one place for many purposes or they are facing with limitation of the space or budget to buy various designs.
- Common sofa became timeworn sooner because of single side design and constant use of one side, and the cloth and material life time will decrease faster. And also changing the decoration and accessories and replacement of them usually requires a high budget and also the required time for this change is a considerable point.
- This invention presents a kind of sofa which can be used on both sides, so that this feature can be added to different designs by make some changes. In this invention the capability to be used by both sides and the combination of two or three sofa into one sofa is considered regardless of design and color. This feature or capability can be presented in many varied designs and we can apply the combination of two different designs (almost in most of models) on one sofa.
- Needing to create diversity in the decoration and furniture of life and work environment, and also the creation pace of this diversity and the required time for these changes is considered in this invention. Common sofa and chairs are produced with an invariable design and color and usually there's a useless empty space on the underside of the sofa. This invention is trying to use this empty space optimally and design two or three sofa into one.
- In this invention another sofa is designed under the first sofa by optimal and maximum use of the interior space of the first sofa and armrests in ergonomic form and complies with existing standards of this industry. In this invention armrests and backrest's edges of the first sofa is usually used as the legs of another sofa.
- In the present invention a dynamic mechanical system is used to design two or three sofa into one. In the first present model the seat bottom height can be adjusted by using a mechanical system to form another sofa on the other side with different pattern, shape, color and etc. In another model the backrest of the first sofa transforms to the flat mode to become parallel with the seat bottom and after a 180 degrees rotation of the two-sided sofa, the backrest of the second sofa converts to the standing mode with the help of recliner systems or any other simple lockable system and forms second sofa with different pattern and etc. The third model is a transformative three sided sofa which can be used as three different sofas by a 180 or 90 degrees rotation and using mentioned mechanical systems. This sofa has folding legs and also is able to convert in to bed. In this invention different sofa can be designed by changing the framework, color, cloth and materials. With the help of these methods another sofa will be formed with different pattern, color, shape and other features only by a rotation and in a short time, which has different view and matches with a different setting. For example consider the lobby of a grand hotel (mentioned in background section), now the manager can change the decoration by the help of this invention in a short time and with no cost.
- Using both sides of a two-sided sofa instead of a common single side sofa can increase the useful life time of the furniture. The surface of common sofa will decay faster compared with a two-sided sofa due to constant use of one side. And also in some models of this invention transporting is much easier because of folding feature of the backrests of both sides.

- Referring now to the invention in more detail in
FIG. 1A toFIG. 1L there is shown adjustable two-sided sofa 10 which includes two 10 f and 10 s. This sofa is consisted of the movable seat bottom 11, two similar andsofa 12 and 13, twomutual armrests 14 f and 14 s and twobackrests 15 and 16 which are placed in twosimilar motion systems 12 and 13 respectively. The seat bottom 11 includes twoarmrests 11 f and 11 s, twoseating platforms 112 a and 112 b and fourmovable joists 113 a, 113 b, 113 c and 113 d which are connected to the two ends of joists. There are twosimilar caps 114 a and 114 c on thesame grooves surface 124 of thearmrest 12 and two 114 b and 114 d on thegrooves surface 134 of thearmrest 13 for passing the 112 a and 112 b. Themovable joists motion system 16 can be seen by removing thesurface 135 of the armrest 13 (as shown inFIG. 1E ). Themotion system 15 can be seen by removing the 121, 123, 124 and 125 of the armrest 12 (as shown insurfaces FIG. 1C ). This motion system includes apneumatic gas spring 150 which includes acylinder 151, thepiston 152 and arelease pin projection 153 itself. Thepiston 152 is connected to theupper surface 121 of the armrest 12 by theconical flange connector 154 a (seeFIGS. 1C and 1D ). There's thevalve 155 on theflange 154 a. Thecylinder 151 is also connected to themovable surface 159 by two 154 b and 154 c and the bolts like 156. There are four sameconical flange connectors 157 a, 157 b, 157 c and 157 d in four corners of thesmall pulleys movable platform 159 which move on four 158 a, 158 b, 158 c and 158 d by movinggrooved rails platform 159 to up and down. Four grooved rails which are placed on the 122 and 123. Thesurfaces release system 160 is consisted of thespring 161, thepivot 162, theshaft 163, thecircular pivot 164, thecontrol lever 166, and the 165 and 167.brackets - In further detail, still referring to the invention of
FIG. 1A toFIG. 1L the 10 f and 10 s are under each other inversely in the form of the adjustable two-sided sofa. By the rotation of thesofa control lever 166 around the pivot of thebracket 167 toward below, theshaft 163 rotates around thepivot 164 and releases thepin 153 to keep the piston in its maximum length and set themovable platform 159 in lowest position in thesofa 10 f (as shown inFIG. 1D ). Themotion system 16 is connected to themotion system 15 by the 112 a, 112 b and after passing through the fourjoists 114 a, 114 b, 114 c and 114 d. There are two caps on each joist. Thesimilar grooves 113 a, 113 b, 113 c and 113 d move along with the joists and prevent the grooves 114 a-114 d from being seen in the outward appearance. The release system in thecaps armrest 13 is similar to therelease system 160 which is controlling by thelever control 166 and the command is transferring to the armrest 13 by thepivot 162 which have passed through thebackrest 14 f. Thesofa 10 is rotated to 180 degrees (seeFIG. 1F ) to form thesofa 10 s but the seat bottom height is not adjusted and is upper than the ergonomic position (seeFIG. 1G ). At this situation the motion system position in the side view is similar toFIG. 1H . In this situation by using proportional force, for example a human weight force and contemporary rotation of thecontrol lever 166, thepin 153 will be released and thepiston 152 sinks into thecylinder 151 and in this position the seat bottom of the sofa moves down and gets stable (seeFIGS. 1H-1J ). With the help of this adjustment, thesofa 10 s is ready to use in the ergonomic and standard position. For keeping the balance and increasing the safety factor in 3seater sofa (seeFIGS. 1K and 1L ) two pneumatic gas springs in each armrest can be used. Generally, different systems such as electromotor or linear gear systems and lockable systems also can be used to move the seat bottom. - In further detail, still referring to the invention of
FIG. 1A toFIG. 1L , the seat bottom 11 is sufficiently wide and long for comfortable seating, such as about 50 to 60 centimeters deep, about 55 to about 65 centimeters wide and about 25 to about 30 centimeters thickness. The distance between the 11 f and 11 s with the floor is set about 40 to 45 centimeters to keep the ergonomic and standard position. Theseating platforms 14 f and 14 s are sufficiently wide and long for comfortable seating, such as about 40 to 45 centimeters height and about 55 to about 65 centimeters wide or diameter. The displacement extent of the movable system is proportional to the seat bottom 11 thickness, about 25 to 30 centimeters. Thebackrests 12 and 13 are sufficiently wide and long to place thearmrests 15 and 16 in themselves, such as about 80 to 90 centimeters height, about 25 to about 30 centimeters wide or diameter and about 70 to 80 centimeters deep. Present sizes are set for 1 seater sofa and it increase proportionally for 2 or 3 seater sofa.movable systems - The construction details of the invention as shown in
FIG. 1A toFIG. 1L are that the main frame of the adjustable twosided sofa 10 may be made of wood or of any other sufficiently rigid and strong material such as high-strength plastic, metal, and the like. And also the surfaces of the backrests, armrests, the seat bottom and caps can be covered by cloth, leather or other soft and suitable material. The contact surface of the armrests and the backrests with the floor should be covered with strong material and proportional with the color and patterns of the sofa. Using material in the making of the motion system also should be sufficiently rigid and strong such as high strength plastic, metal and the like. Further, the various components of the adjustable twosided sofa 10 can be made of different materials and also using material in making the sofa should be lightweight to be easy to pick up and rotating. - Referring now to the invention in more detail in
FIG. 2A toFIG. 2Q there is shown transformative twosided sofa 20 which includes of two 20 s and 20 f with asofa bed 28 f. This sofa is consisted of themovable backrest 21 f, the mutual seat bottom 22 and the 23 and 24. Thelegs 23 and 24 in thelegs sofa 20 f will form the armrests of thesofa 20 s. There's themovable backrest 21 s, related to thesofa 20 s under thesofa 20 f which is in fold-flat position (seeFIG. 2B ). The mutual seat bottom 22 comprises the 22 f and 22 s. There are twoseating platforms 211 f and 212 f in the back of thecovers backrest 21 f which are connected to the back surface of the backrest by two connector zips 213 f and 214 f. We can see two 215 f and 216 f which are placed in the back of thefolding legs backrest 21 f and its inside space. The motion system of thebackrest 21 f is under the 251 f and 261 f in the side space of the seat bottom 22 and thecircular caps backrest 21 f And also the motion system of thebackrest 21 s is under the 23 and 24, under the circular caps (not numbered) in the side space of the seat bottom 22 and thearmrests backrest 21 s. All of the motion systems of the transformative two-sided sofa 20 can be the same and similar to themechanism 25. Themotion mechanism 25 could be a recliner mechanism as shown inFIG. 2Q or the replacing systems such as the manual simple lockable systems, accompanied with electromotor systems, pneumatic systems or any similar systems can be used. The control levers 27 f and 27 s also are respectively related to the releasing system of the motion system of the 21 f and 21 s. Thebackrests pivot 271 s connects thecontrol lever 27 s to the releasing system of the motion system. - In more detail, still referring to the invention of
FIG. 2A toFIG. 2Q the 20 f and 20 s are inversely under each other in the form of the transformative two-sofa sided sofa 20. We separate the 211 f and 212 f of the backrest's 21 f back by opening thecovers 213 f and 214 f, and unfold thezips 215 f and 216 f. Then straighten thefolding legs backrest 21 f toward the shown direction inFIG. 2E (by using proportional force and contemporary rotation of thecontrol lever 27 f) to be at the same level with theseating platform 22 f, and place the legs on the floor. Now thebed 28 f is ready to use (as shown inFIG. 2F ). Thebackrest 21 f moves and changes to the fold-flat position by releasing thecontrol lever 27 f again (seeFIGS. 2G and 2H ), then we fold the 215 f and 216 f and attach thefolding legs 211 f and 212 f to the backrest's 21 f back by closing thecovers 213 f and 214 f (seezips FIGS. 2I and 2J ). Now the tow-sided sofa 20 is ready to transport (as shown inFIG. 2J ). The whole sofa rotates to 180 degrees in the fold-flat position to set thesofa 20 in the opposite side of the first position and thebackrest 21 s stands at the top (seeFIGS. 2K and 2L ). Then by releasing thecontrol lever 27 s, thepivot 271 s rotates and cause thebackrest 21 s to move toward (by using proportional force) the shown direction inFIG. 2M to stand in an upright position and form thesofa 20 s (seeFIG. 2O and compare it withFIG. 2A ). Two of the four locations of the motion mechanisms of the transformative twosided sofa 20 are shown inFIG. 2P . - In further detail, still referring to the invention of
FIG. 2A toFIG. 2Q , the 22 f and 22 s are sufficiently wide and long for comfortable seating, such as about 50 to 70 centimeters deep, about 180 to about 220 centimeters wide and the thickness of the seat bottom 22 is about 20 to about 25 centimeters. The distance between theseating platforms 22 f and 22 s with the floor is set about 40 to 45 centimeters to keep the ergonomic and standard position. Theseating platforms 21 f and 21 s are sufficiently wide and long for comfortable seating, such as about 50 to 65 centimeters height, about 180 to about 220 centimeters wide and about 20 centimeters thickness. Present sizes are considered for 3 seater sofa and decrease for 1 or 2 seater sofa proportionally.backrests - The construction details of the invention as shown in
FIG. 2A toFIG. 2Q are that the main frame of the transformative two-sided sofa 20 may be made of wood or of any other sufficiently rigid and strong material such as high-strength plastic, metal, and the like. The surfaces of the backrests, armrests, seat bottoms and the circular caps can be covered by cloth, leather or other soft and suitable material. Further, the various components of the transformative two-sided sofa 20 can be made of different materials. And also using material in making the sofa should be lightweight to be easy to pick up and rotating. The edges of the contact surface of the transformative two-sided sofa 20 with the floor at both sides should be covered with strong material and proportional with the color and pattern of the sofa. - Referring now to the invention in more detail in
FIG. 3A toFIG. 3W there is shown three-sided sofa 30 which includes two 3 30 f and 30 s and a 6seater sofa seater sofa 30 t with two 38 f and 38 s. Then thebackrest 31 s is moved toward the shown direction inFIG. 3N (by releasing thecontrol lever 37 s) to be in an upright position and form thesofa 30 s with different color, shape and etc. from thesofa 30 f (seeFIG. 30 and compare it withFIG. 3A ). We separate the 311 s and 312 s from the backrest's 31 s back by opening thecovers 313 s and 314 s, and unfold thezips 315 s and 316 s (as shown infolding legs FIG. 3Q ). Then straighten thebackrest 31 s toward the shown direction inFIG. 3R (by using proportional force and contemporary rotation of thecontrol lever 37 s) to be at the same level with theseating platform 32 s and place the legs on the floor. Now thebed 38 s is ready to use (seeFIG. 3S ) with different shape and color from thebed 38 f. Again we rotate the transformative threesided sofa 30 in fold-flat position to 90 degrees (as shown position inFIG. 3L ). Then separate four 311 f, 312 f, 311 s and 312 s from thecovers 31 f and 31 s, unfold fourbackrests 315 f, 316 f, 315 s and 316 s and the release twofolding legs 37 f and 37 s to place the legs on the floor (seecontrol levers FIGS. 3T-3V ). Now thesofa 30 t is ready to use (as shown inFIG. 3W ) with double capacity compared with a common sofa (for example, 6seater instead of 3seater). - In further detail, still referring to the invention of
FIG. 3A toFIG. 3W , the 32 s and 32 f are sufficiently wide and long for comfortable seating, such as about 55 to 65 centimeters deep, about 200 to about 220 centimeters wide and the thickness of the seat bottom 32 is about 20 to about 25 centimeters. The distance between theseating platforms 32 f and 32 s with the floor is set about 40 to 45 centimeters to keep the ergonomic and standard position. Theseating platforms 31 f and 31 s are sufficiently wide and long for comfortable seating, such as about 55 to 65 centimeters height, about 200 to about 220 centimeters wide and about 20 centimeters thickness. The vertical height of thebackrests 315 f, 316 f, 315 s and 316 s is about 20 to about 25 centimeters. The present sizes are for 3seater transformative three-folding legs sided sofa 30 and it decrease proportionally for 1 or 2seater sofa. - The construction details of the invention as shown in
FIG. 3A toFIG. 3W are that the main frame of transformative three-sided sofa 30 may be made of wood or of any other sufficiently rigid and strong material such as high-strength plastic, metal, and the like. The surfaces of the backrests, seat bottoms and circular caps can be covered by the cloth, leather or other soft and suitable material. Further, the various components of the transformative three-sided sofa 30 can be made of different materials. And also using material in making the sofa should be lightweight to be easy to pick up and rotating. The edges of contact surface of the transformative three-sided sofa 30 with the floor can be covered by strong material and proportional with the color and pattern of the sofa at the both sides. - The sizes of the entire described sofa are measured in ergonomic and standard scale. All of the present figures are presented as example and any designs with different shape can be replaced by the used designs in the mentioned adjustable and transformative two and three-sided sofa.
- The advantages of the present invention, without limitation, are to have two sofas with different shape, color, model etc. and suitable for different tastes and the life environment of the end user into one sofa. And the diversity would be resulting just by a 180 or 90 degrees rotation in a short time. The life time of this kind of furniture is longer due to the use of both sides instead of constant use of one side. Further different designs with various shapes can be made by three mentioned methods. And also the
20 and 30 are more easy and safe to transport compared with common sofa due to the folding feature of the backrests of both sides. And the transformative threesofas sided sofa 30 has the capability to increase the capacity (for example 3 to 6seater) and also can be used as the bed with two different patterns, colors and etc. - While the foregoing written description of the invention enables one of ordinary skill to make and use what is considered presently to be the best mode thereof, those of ordinary skill will understand and appreciate the existence of variations, combinations, and equivalents of the specific embodiment, method, and examples herein. The invention should therefore not be limited by the above described embodiment, method, and examples, but by all embodiments and methods within the scope and spirit of the invention.
