Description

W. GRAHAM & J. A. DENNISON.
Lewis.
No. 201,409. Patented March 19, 1878.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER GRAHAM AND JONATHAN A. DENNISON, OF ANNISQUAM, MASS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LEWISES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,409, dated March 19, 1878; application filed February 5, 1878.
To all whom it man concern.-
Be it known that we, WALTER GRAHAM and JONATHAN A. DENmsoN, of Annisquam, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lewises, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of our improved device. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for connecting blocks of stone to the hoisting rope or chain, which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, which will hold the stone securely even should the hole be winding or deeper in one part than another, and which will be always in gear when in use.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A are two jaws or short bars, which are made wider at their lower ends than at their upper ends, their inner or adjacent edges bein g straight, and their outer edges inclined.
. I11 the upper ends of the jaws A are formed eyes to receive two links, B, which are both inserted in a single link, 0, to which the hoisting rope or chain is attached. D is a key,
which is driven between the jaws A, to prevent them from being drawn out of the hole.
In using the device a hole wider in its inner than in its outer part is drilled in the block of stone to be handled. The jaws A are then inserted and the key D driven in between them, binding them in place, and preventing them from being drawn out.
The device is detached from the stone by knocking out the key D.
WVith this construction the device is always in gear ready for use, and does not have to be taken apart in attaching it to and detaching it from the stone.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the jaws A A, inclined downwardly on their outer edges, to fit under an undercut portion of the rock, and the intermediate key D, of the links B B, connected with the upper ends of the jaws A, and converging to a link, 0, in which they are held, as and for the purpose specified.
