Abstract
The modular mattress designed to be easily assembled. The mattress assembly includes a double-border wire unit having a central cavity. The cavity is adapted to receive a matrix of coil spring units therein. The coil spring matrix is removably attached to the double-border wire unit. Foam rubber forms are inserted into the wire unit to form the perimeter of the mattress without using glue or similar fastening means.
Description
- 1. Field of the Invention
- The present invention generally relates to bedding construction, and particularly to a modular mattress assembly that has easily assembled, modular mattress components, including a double border wire unit for receiving a coil assembly therein.
- 2. Description of the Related Art
- Mattresses are conventionally constructed with a central portion or core surrounded by a border structure. The core is generally fabricated from a matrix of coil springs covered by a quilted fabric. Other core assemblies may comprise polyurethane, air or water bladders, latex or other synthetic material. Conventional border structures comprise a semi-rigid frame, often fabricated from foam rubber, to which the core is attached with glue. The assembled mattress is unwieldy, and therefore difficult for the average consumer to handle and transport. The bulkiness of the assembled mattress also creates shipping problems to the extent that anti-dumping regulations are violated if exported to some countries. A modular mattress assembly having compact and easy-to-handle components would certainly be of benefit to the bedding industry and consumers. Thus, a modular mattress assembly solving the aforementioned problems is desired.
- The modular mattress assembly comprises modular mattress components designed for easy assembly. The mattress components include a double-border wire unit having a central cavity. The cavity is adapted to receive a matrix of coil spring units therein. The coil spring matrix is removably attached to the double-border wire unit. Foam rubber forms are inserted into the wire unit to form the perimeter of the mattress without using glue or similar fastening means.
- Accordingly, the invention presents a mattress having modular features to enhance shipping and/or transporting thereof. The modular components are easy to assemble and include foam rubber segments that form the perimeter of the mattress. The invention provides for improved elements thereof in an arrangement for the purposes described that are inexpensive, dependable and fully effective in accomplishing their intended purposes.
- These and other features of the present invention will become readily apparent upon further review of the following specification and drawings.
-
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a modular mattress unit according to the present invention. -
FIG. 2 is an exploded view of the modular mattress unit ofFIG. 1 . -
FIG. 3 is a partial perspective view of the modular mattress ofFIG. 1 , showing details of the attachment structure. - Similar reference characters denote corresponding features consistently throughout the attached drawings.
- Referring to
FIGS. 1-3 , themodular mattress assembly 10 comprises a double-bordered wire modular unit having vertically-spaced top and bottom (or upper and lower) members. The top member comprises respective outer and 12, 12 a that lie in the same horizontal plane. Theinner border wires inner wire 12 a is laterally spaced from theouter wire 12. The bottom member is a mirror image of the top member, having respective outer and 14, 14 a. A plurality of C-inner wires shaped wire fasteners 18 is employed to attachmembers 12 to 12 a andmembers 14 to 14 a. The top and bottom double-bordered members are adapted, when assembled, to be spaced apart vertically, establishing the periphery of the assembly and defining a cavity in the center thereof. Although illustrated as rectangular, it should be recognized that the double-bordered top and bottom members could be designed in other configurations (circular, hexagonal, octagonal, etc.), and in various sizes. A matrix ofcoil spring units 16 defines a modular unit that is adapted for insertion into the cavity to form the central portion of the mattress assembly. A plurality offasteners 19 are employed to attach the 12 a, 14 a to theinner border wires coil spring unit 16.Semi-rigid segments 20, preferably fabricated from foam rubber, are removably inserted into the vertical space between the top and bottom double-bordered members to define the perimeter of the assembled mattress and to provide stability and support for the assembly. Thesegments 20 are non-adhesively retained between the upper and lower members, e.g., by a pressure or fiction fit between the double-border wire units of the top and bottom members. - It is to be understood that the present invention is not limited to the embodiments described above, but encompasses any and all embodiments within the scope of the following claims.
