Abstract

The present invention is a Torah scroll ornament comprising a Torah crown having at least two latching members and a Torah scroll base having an oval-like shape with an opening for scroll's upper handles and configured to fit to the top surface of a covered Torah scroll, wherein said Torah scroll base is releasably connected to said Torah crown.

Description

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to Jewish religious ceremonial objects, and more particular to ornaments of a Torah scroll.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

In Judaism, certain religious scrolls are holy or sacred and are regularly used in various ceremonies or in various religious practices. One such object is the Torah. In Jewish religious practice, the Torah is a specially prepared scroll containing the Hebrew text of the Five Books of Moses. This Torah scroll is handwritten on kosher parchment according to the strict dictates of a series of ancient laws and traditions extending back for thousands of years. At least one Torah scroll is maintained in every synagogue and is used each week during prayer services.
In the Torah scroll, the complete parchment scroll is bound at opposite left and right edges to respective rollers which are provided with upper and lower end-plates and handles. When not used for reading, the Torah scroll is often covered with a Torah cover and decorated with a Torah crown positioned on the upper handles of the Torah scroll.
During certain religious celebrations, such as Simchat Torah, congregations traditionally take the Torah scroll out of the Holy Ark of the synagogue, awarding their worshipers with the honor of embracing the Torah while dancing around the podium, from which the weekly portion is read. During the dance, the Torah crown which is placed on the Torah scroll but not secured to it, might fall, thus causing a temporally interruption to the dance and even damage to the Torah crown.
It would clearly be desirable to provide a Torah crown which can be safely secured to the Torah scroll, and yet easily removed then the Torah scroll is used for reading.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The object of the invention is to provide a Torah crown which is releasably attached to a Torah scroll.
The above mentioned object is achieved by providing a Torah scroll base attached to the covered Torah scroll, and a Torah crown attached by a snap connection to the Torah scroll base.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

In the following detailed description of the invention, specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the invention. However, it will be obvious to one skilled in the art that the invention may be practiced without these specific details. In other instances well known components, and elements have not been described in detail so as not to unnecessarily obscure aspects of the invention.
It will be readily understood that the components of the present invention, as generally described and illustrated in the figures, may be arranged and designed in a wide variety of different configurations. Thus, the following more detailed description of the embodiments of the apparatus and methods of the present invention, as represented in the figures, is not intended to limit the scope of the invention, but is merely representative of selected embodiments of the invention.
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a Torah crown 1 of an embodiment of the present invention. The Torah crown 1 includes at least two protuberant latching members 11, located each, on the opposite side of the outer lower surface 12 of the Torah crown 1.
The latching member 11 has a preferably spherical shape; however, the latching member 11 may have any other suitable shape.
The present invention also includes a Torah scroll base 2 having an oval-like shape with an opening 22 that allows protrusion of the scroll's upper handles through the scroll base 2. The Torah scroll base has a circumference that is larger than a circumference of the top surface of the covered Torah scroll 4.
Due to this larger circumference, it is possible to fit the scroll base 2 to the top surface of a covered Torah scroll 4, while allowing the scroll's upper handles to protrude through the opening 22. The scroll base 2 is connected to the covered Torah scroll 4 by fasteners 41 with cap nuts 42.
The scroll base 2 also includes two engagement members 3, each positioned on the opposite side of the scroll base 2. The ends of the engagement members 3 are inserted into the openings of the swivel bases 21, thus allowing for the rotation of the engagement member 3 around its longer axis. The engagement member 3 also includes a latching portion 32, configured to be snap connected to the latching member 11 of the Torah crown 1. The engagement members 3 additionally include end stops 31 which restrict axial dislocation of the engagement members 3.
The present invention also comprises a method 50 for securing a Torah crown to the covered Torah scroll.
The method 50 starts with a stage 51 of connecting a Torah scroll base to a covered Torah scroll.
Stage 51 is followed by a stage 52 of positioning a Torah crown on the top of the Torah scroll base.
Stage 52 is followed by a stage 53 of releasably securing the Torah crown to the Torah scroll base.
Although illustrative embodiments have been shown and described, a wide range of modification change and substitution is contemplated in the foregoing disclosure and in some instances, some features of the embodiments may be employed without, a corresponding use of other features. Accordingly, it is appropriate that the appended claims be construed broadly and in a manner consistent with the scope of the embodiments disclosed herein.

Claims

1. A Torah scroll ornament comprising:

a. a Torah crown having at least two latching members;

b. a Torah scroll base having an oval-like shape with an opening for scroll's upper handles and configured to fit to the top surface of a covered Torah scroll, wherein said Torah scroll base is releasably connected to said Torah crown.

2. A Torah scroll ornament of claim 1, wherein each of the said latching members is located on the opposite side of the outer lower surface of the Torah crown.

3. A Torah scroll ornament of claim 2, wherein said latching members are protuberant latching members.

4. A Torah scroll of claim 3, wherein said latching members have a spherical shape.

5. A Torah scroll of any previous claim, wherein said Torah scroll base is configured to be connected to the covered Torah scroll by fasteners.

6. A Torah scroll of any previous claim, wherein said Torah scroll base comprises two swiveling engagement members, each positioned on the opposite side of the Torah scroll base, and wherein each of said engagement members comprises a latching portion configured to be snap connected to the latching member of the Torah crown.

7. Method of securing a Torah crown to a covered Torah scroll comprising the steps of:

a. attaching a Torah scroll base to a covered Torah scroll;

b. positioning a Torah crown on the Torah scroll base;

c. releasably securing said Torah crown to the Torah scroll base.
