thereover.
A further object of the invention is to prov de a cutting machine wherein the cutter or shceris in the form of a rotatable drum removably ournaled in a casing and includes a feed With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the draWing:-
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a vegetable slicing machine constructed in accordance with the ally operated stub shaft therefor;
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2, showing the roller guide for the open end of the drum slicer and the stub shaft bearing for the inner closed end of the slicer;
Figure 4 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 1, showing the latch for attaching the drum slicer to the stub shaft in disengaged position and in engaged position as illustrated by dotted lines; and
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view showing the cutting blades on the periphery of the drum slicer,
Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of one end of the blade and its holder.
The cutting machine disclosed herein is especially designed for cutting of vegetables, fruits, etc., and comprises a pair of end walls It and II constituting standards or supports and connected by an interposed substantially cylindrical casing Wall I2 that is provided with a relatively large opening to cooperate with the end walls 59 and H to provide a receiving hopper I4. The lower end of the casing Wall [2 is provided with a series of drain openings IS. A relatively large circular opening I6 is formed in the end wall In to accommodate the mounting of a rotatable drum cutter designated in general by the reference character I! and said opening I6 is surrounded by an inwardly directed annular flange l8 for limiting inward movement of the drum slicer.
The drum slicer H comrises a cylindrical wall l9 having a closed end wall 29 adapted to be positioned adjacent the end wall ll of the casing structure while the opposite end of the cylindrical Wall I9 is open and carries a pair of spaced annular flanges 2| 'and 22 between which rollers 23 are journalled. The wheels 23 ride upon the inner annular wall of the opening Hi, the peripheral edges of the flange 22 being spaced from the track opening wall while the peripheral edges of the flange 2i overlie the outer face of the end wall In surrounding the opening I 6.
The support for the inner end of the drum slicer comprises a stub shaft 24 journalled in the end wall H and carrying upon its inner end a disk plate 25 that contacts the end wall to space the end wall 20 of the drum slicer from the wall H of the casing. The stub shaft 24 is maintained against axial displacement by means of the screw and block combination 26 and said stub shaft carries a crank handle 2'! upon its outer end. A pin 28 projects facially from the disk plate 25 and is adapted to be received in an opening 28a provided in the end wall 26 of the drum slicer, this arrangement positioning cooperative lock devices on the stub shaft and end wall 20 of the drum slicer for engagement with each other. The inner end 24a of the stub shaft 24 outwardly of the disk plate 25 extends thorugh an axial opening in the end wall 20 of the drum slicer and is provided with diametrically opposite slots 29 to receive the opposite edge Wall 30 of a lever 3! that is pivoted as at 32 upon the inner face of the end wall 20 of the drum slicer, the lever 3! being provided with an operating finger piece 33.
A series of circumferentially spaced slotted openings 34 extend lengthwise of the cylindrical wall IQ of the drum slicer and at an angle to the longitudinal axis thereof, each slotted opening having a slicing blade associated therewith, one end of each blade 35 is anchored by a screw 35a to the drum slicer adjacent the end wall 26 while the other end is received in a holder 35b that carries an angled forked arm 350 secured to the flange 22. The cutting edge of the blade 35 overlies the forward edge of the slot 34 as shown in Figures 1 and 3. g
The vegetables to be sliced are placed in the receiving hopper M and the drum slicer rotated by means of the crank handle 2?. The thickness of the slices may be regulated by adjusting the blades 35 relative to the slots 34 while the guard Wall 36 that is adjustably secured to one of the perpendicular walls 53 of the hopper by means of the wing nut combination 3? as shown in Figure t constitutes an abutment for the material in the hopper during rotation of the drum slicer. The sliced vegetables are directed interiorly of the drum slicer and are discharged through the open end thereof. Operation of the drum slicer is greatly facilitated by the two point bearing for the same comprising the stub axle support at the closed inner end and the roller or wheel support 23 at its open outer end. To remove the drum slicer from the casing for purposes of cleaning or the like, it is only necessary to disengage the lever 3! from the slotted end 24a of the stub shaft 2 whereupon the drum slicer may be readily removed. outwardly of the casing through the opening H3 in the end wall it. The pin 28 and opening 28a on the disk plate 25 and end wall 28 respectively of the drum slicer operate to position the cross slotted end of the stub shaft to receive the edge wall 35! of the slotted opening in the attaching lever 3 i.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent and while there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:--
1. In a cutting machine of the character described, a casing comprising end walls with an opening in one end wall, a drum slicer having one closed end wall within the casing with the open end of the drum at the opening in the casing wall, roller bearings interposed between the opening end of the drum slicer and the wall of the casing opening, and means carried by the closed end wall of the casing and engaged with the closed end wall of the drum for rotating the drum slicer comprising a manually operable stub shaft journalled in the casing wall and having a notched inner end, a disk on the inner end of the stub shaft interlockingly engaged with the end wall of the drum and a lever on the drum wall adapted to be engaged with the notched end of the stub shaft.
2. In a cutting machine of the character described, a casing comprising end walls with an opening in one end wall, a drum slicer having one closed end Wall within the casing with the open end of the drum at the opening in the casing wall, a two point suspension for the rotatable drum comprising roller bearings at the open end thereof and a drive shaft axially supporting the closed end, the inner end of the drive shaft having circumferentially spaced notches therein, a notched lever pivoted on the inner face of the closed end of the drum with the lever notch received. in the shaft notches and a disk on the inner end of the stub shaft interlockingly engaged with the end wall of the drum.
3. In a cutting machine of the character described, a casing comprising end walls with an opening in one end wall, a drum slicer having one closed end wall within the casing with the open end of the drum at the opening in the casing wall, a two point suspension for the rotatable drum comprising roller bearings at the open end thereof and a drive shaft axially supporting the closed end, the inner end of the drive shaft having circumferentially spaced notches therein and a notched lever pivoted on the inner face of the closed end of the drum with the lever notch received in the shaft notches, and interlocking means carried by the shaft and end wall to position the shaft notches for reception of the notched lever and to form ,a driving connection between the shaft and drum slicer.
